When this song was broadcast in the US in 1974 (the Spiders from mars last stand version) the words "Goddamn" (from Time) and Suicide" (from all the young dudes) were censored, but "Wanking" was not. That is because Americans did not know what Wanking meant. Similarly, Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side (produced by David Bowie) became a hit in Britain becuase Brits had no clue what "Giving Good Head" meant. Trent Reznor paid tribute to this by including a sample of "Wanking" from Aladdin Sane in both re-mixed versions of Mr. Self Destruct on Further Down the Spiral.

This song is even crazier than you'd think. He's saying time is a predator in the first half. It kills people and it metaphorically dominates them in all sorts of ways. The "demanding Billy Dolls" line was a reference to Billy Murcia from the band New York Dolls, a friend of David's. He had an overdose and his friends put him in a bathtub and gave him coffee hoping it would wake him up, but that only made things worse. David was addicted to cocaine when he put the song out in 1973 and afraid he'd die the same way. In the second half, he's talking about how time heals wounds and losing people is difficult, but you'll be okay with time. The lines "flexes like a whore" and "falls wanking to the floor" are talking about clock positions on top of being a metaphor. 9:25 is in the PM, and "we should be on by now" is him saying it's time for a concert. David was all sorts of deep. Peter Frampton played guitar on this tour.
Hey Ku Rup.. love your reaction to this. When I was 15 yrs old.. this song blew me away and I perform it to this day and im now a 60 yr old man.. and let me tell you this, when your well versed in Bowie he lets you become him... for me the greatest showman earth has ever seen.

Been in love with Bowie since 1974 and was lucky enough to see him perform twice, once was during the Glass Spider tour as well. He was an extremely curious, creative & experimental artist who broke every rule at the time, which is totally lost on younger people today. He was very prolific with 25+ studio albums, no two sounds alike. You may LOVE one of them, and hate another if you are not open to all musical genres. I am always thrilled to see someone newly discovering him today, but hope they don't get discouraged at their first try. Hope you keep checking out his catalog, I will be watching...

Despite a monologue occasionally interrupted by David Bowie this reminded me of seeing the tour in England at the time and this was the standout song for me.

I think it would be better if you paused it more. There were times where you let it play for as long as 3 seconds! We all know that our attention spans are only 2 seconds long! Songs are best experienced in a series of 1 to 2 second bursts. Some people say that you lose the flow, feeling and drama of a song, if you cut it up into endless small chunks but such people are obviously trolls and are best ignored! ;) :)
