  • Join me as I take my Porsche 993 on a solo Porsche road trip into the mountains of North Carolina. I really wanted to get to know my 1995 Porsche 993 911 Coupe so I decided to jump in the car and take a week to drive to the Tail of the Dragon and back, stopping along the way and taking in the sights.
This solo Porsche road trip really allowed me to push my Porsche 993 hard enough to learn its' strong points and to also identify the kinds of mods I think it's going to need.
If you join me on this Porsche road trip, you'll get insight into what it's like to drive a Porsche 993 to the Tail of the Dragon. You'll learn exactly where you should stay overnight when you're at the Tail of the Dragon, and I'll also share with you how I found a secret waterfall location off the beaten path.
Finally, maybe the most eye-opening thing for me on this Porsche road trip was that it WASN’T the Tail of the Dragon that was the most exciting road on which to drive my Porsche 993...it was another road completely.
So...watch the video and you'll learn exactly where to go should YOU decide you want to take a Porsche 993 road trip to the Tail of the Dragon!
Please don't forget to subscribe, like (or dislike!) and comment.
Have you taken your Porsche 993 on a Porsche road trip to the Tail of the Dragon before? Please take a few minutes to share your experience so that others who are considering this trip in their Porsche 993 can learn from it.

My only real complaint about this video is...........it was too short! Would have liked to see more on the road stuff and some of those views you were talking about. Also, a little higher volume level of you talking versus the background music.
Love your 993 too! I had a pretty nice 996 but sold it a couple years ago because I think I spent too much time on rennlist and worried about all the things that can go wrong with the M96 engine. I have a Corvette now but would love to get into a 993. I'm hoping maybe after the fallout of the whole corona virus thing prices might come down a bit.

Liked the video, nice. In January we purchased a metallic black 97 4S and had it trailered in to our cold and snowy state. The nignt of delivery, it was 12:30pm and a major storm was upon us, talk about timing. Well, as a resident of CT we find ourselves not willing to drive the car just yet. So since Jan. our 911 has been sitting in our garage waiting for that moment. We are waiting for the salt and sand to be cleaned from the road surface. So, in the meantime I find myself looking to videos like yours to visualize our driving experience. I have been around german imports for a long time, and have driven many Porsches since my early 20's, driving customers home from our shop or to run shop errands on top of the mechanically stuff I was asked to do. As new owner of a 993 I look forward to the driving experience of this car and feeling the drive like many have expressed so excitingly. Watching the 993 market, it appears these cars are rapidly picking up in price and we keep hearing people all around claiming the last of the air cooled Porsche are absolutely the best. We are looking forward to feeling the connection to our car and just wanted to say Thanks for the videos, take care and be safe.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You’re going to love your 993. It’s got soul, character and can be truly enjoyed within the speed limit. When I say that what I mean is that - at least in my experience - the more modern 911’s ask you to go much faster than is legal to get the most enjoyment out of them.
      Thanks for watching.

993 great air cooled Porsche! Loved my 993 Turbo and 911SC that l still own.
I did the Tail of the Dragon a few years back in my Wife's 2004 Miataspeed Pefect car for the Dragon. Bought my first BMW back in 1974 when people didn't know what there were. It was a 2002ti, then 320i, 530i, 2002tii, 533i, 535i and a bunch more, then the M cars E28 M5, E36 M3, E34 M5 and the holy grail 91 E30 M3 So 12 years ago thought it might be good for a change. Almost bought a 91 355 spider, but found a speedyellow 993 Turbo and in the long run my best car decision ever!! Second best is buying my 78 911SC : )

Take a Porsche off the assembly line and just put it on the track and race. Must say when I was raising my kids the BMW was much more practical, but still sporty and less costly to own A bit off topic but I'm looking for someone that can properly replace my 911SC headliner

The key is to keep the vlogs at an ample but short time to entertain the viewer, and keep his attention for about 10 to 15 mins. Two concepts here.. less editing and work time for the creator while keeping content rich, vibrant and flowing and not stretched out where attention is lost. Great video and car ! On overnight trips , lodging does make a difference in enjoyment. I loved the lodge, the views, water falls ect.. Since you love the air-cooled Porches, what is your opinion on the Panamera? A four door Porsche, a real sports car?

    • @Rennthusiast
      @Rennthusiast  4 года назад +2

The Panamera is an impressive car and has certainly earned a place of respect in the Porsche line up. When it was first released many long-time Porsche enthusiasts had major question marks around it given that it was a 4 door. That has changed, I think.
With that being said, there’s simply no substitute for the character, soul and history of a 911. It is the quintessential Porsche and I view it in a different category than I do the Panamera.
I wouldn’t mind owning a Panamera, but would think about it in the “I would lease it, daily it and treat it like a very nice tool to use to get around” while my air cooled cars fall into the “buy this car, treasure it, take care of it and keep it in the collection long term.”
I don’t know if that makes sense but I guess the bottom line is that the 2 cars are in completely different categories for me.
Here’s another way to look at it. I have a 2018 BMW X5M as my daily driver. It’s one of the most under-appreciated modern BMW’s from a performance and engineering perspective. It’s a blast to drive yet it lacks the character and level of exclusivity of either of my air cooled 911’s.
I imagine I would have the same thoughts about the Panamera if I owned one. Super impressive, very nice but just not as special as an old (or new) 911.
      Thanks for watching!

Bavarian Enthusiast TV New subscriber and aspiring Porsche owner here.
I started going to Deal’s Gap in 2007, when I was doing a lot of sportbike riding on my 2005 Yamaha R1. Made many pilgrimages to East Tennessee and WNC, including a lot of the roads you talk about on your channel (I think I saw one where you were in Little Switzerland - 226 is flat-out one of my favorite roads in the area).
I absolutely love Hwy. 129, but it’s just too tight for a lot of folks. My main problem with Hwy. 129 is that, with how well-known it’s become, you’re always looking over your shoulder for cops. You have both THP and Blount County out there, and, last time I was out there, when I had my 2016 Subaru WRX, I almost got nailed by a Blount County Deputy Sheriff on a BMW R1200RT who was shooting instant-on RADAR from his bike. He was hiding in amongst a group of motorcycles in one of the pull-off points in a curve, and I only knew he was there because my RADAR detector went off full blast from behind me as I accelerated out of the curve.
Like you said, Cherohala Skyway is great, too. It’s hard to find a bad road out there.
Some of my favorite roads are actually around Boone. Of course there’s The Snake (421 through Shady Valley, TN), VA-58 north of there, NC 221, 226, 80, 181 near Morganton is like a racetrack. And down into GA, you have Richard B. Russell Hwy, Blood Mountain, Wolf Pen Gap Rd., etc, etc...

The older Porsches have less comfort than the newer, but far more driver engagement. The older cars are also smaller and lighter - so they have more of a go kart feel. It’s not crazy to trade to an older car, it’s just a question of what balance of qualities is best for you.
