The merging with the bird in the teleporting machine is a reference to an old Jeff Goldblum movie where his character merges with a fly that flies into his pod in the last second. He spends the rest of the movie falling apart while transforming into a disgusting fly man monster. There was no cgi in that movie and for its time it was pretty gross.
