I think the reason calisthenics catches the eye and interests more non gym goers, is because it is easier to emphasise how hard it is to pull off these feats. Even an L sit is impossible for most people. With weight lifting, sure you can see how much they are lifting, but its hard to emphasise what it is to experience that sort of weight, as your average person doesn't weight lift. I dunno, just a random thought.
