  • In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains DENTAL ABSCESS (aka tooth abscess) including causes, symptoms and treatment of a dental abscess.
    What is a dental abscess?
According to NHS UK "A dental abscess is a build-up of pus in the teeth or gums caused by an infection. It needs urgent treatment by a dentist. A dental abscess will not go away on its own"
Are there different types of dental abscess?
There are three main types of tooth abscess:
    1. The first is an infection that develops in your gums. It doesn't usually affect your tooth or supporting structures.
    2. The second is something called a periapical abscess. This is an infection that forms at the tip of your tooth root. If you have a tooth that's decayed or fractured, bacteria can enter your tooth and spread to the pulp which is the innermost part of the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria invade the pulp, infection can spread to the tip of your tooth's root, then, eventually to the surrounding bone, causing an abscess to form.
    3. Finally periodontal… This infection starts in the bone and tissues that support your teeth. A periodontal abscess usually results from gum disease and is more common among adults.
What are common symptoms of dental abscess?
Signs of a dental abscess can include:
    - intense toothache or pain in your gums
    - redness inside the mouth, or outside the mouth on the face or jaw
    - sensitivity to hot or cold food and drink in the affected area
    - a bad taste in your mouth
    - difficulty opening your mouth and chewing food
    - a swollen face or jaw
    - a high temperature
What is the treatment for a dental abscess?
Dental abscesses are usually treated by a dentist. The dentist will drain away the pus. If a problem with your tooth has caused the abscess, you may need root canal treatment, or the tooth may be removed. You'll be given a local anaesthetic, so you do not feel any pain.
You may be offered painkillers to take for a few days after treatment and may also be given antibiotics.

I popped my own for years but I finally got 9 teeth removed and the infection was all the way into my sinus cavity. I have been in pain for years but didn't have money to take them out. I take many types of medications that take the saliva and cause your teeth to go bad. My doctor just kept prescribing antibiotics. Its hard to find a dentist who isn't trying to charge for everything they possibly can. I finally found a dentist who worked with me and was so much cheaper. For the past 8 months I can't stay awake, I am dizzy, headaches all the time with buzzing in my head. I am hoping that after these 9 teeth are removed and on antibiotics that I will feel better. I have a MRI scheduled for next week. My doctor is filling out disability forms for me and I'm 50. I hope this helps all my problems. Try harder to get your teeth looked after....you will not be sorry. 🙏🙏

@@metallboy25 and that is so sad! Everyone should get at least basic dental care. A lot of ailments stem from teeth. I didn't believe that before, but I do now. Some of my health problems have nothing to do with my teeth but I have more energy than I had in months....almost a year, since they have been pulled. I still have all my front teeth so people don't even know that I have none in the back. I wished I was put under but I couldn't afford that. If you can, I definitely would be put under. It was so painful!

In my state they just recently started allowing state insurance to cover dental. But it’s for basic stuff. Which does include pullings. But I have to go see a specialist. I have heart issues. They didn’t think they could work on me with just numbing shots, because they contain epinephrine. Now I have to pay 360$, to receive general anesthesia. Which is not bad at all considering how much I was looking at before the basics were covered. My parents were extremely neglectful. I hadn’t seen a dentist since I was 13. But I did practice good hygiene. So luckily I only have to get one removed. I still will have to pay out of pocket if I get an implant. I was quoted 2800$ the last place I called. It really sucks… Dental care is not cosmetic. It should be covered just like other medical care. It’s not my fault nobody would take me pre 18, bc my state covers all dental for under 18. So I’m lucky they cover the basics for 18+ now. But it’s not enough for kids who become young adults. That couldn’t seize that opportunity. Now I’m stuck spending the little money I have to get this removed. And I have to save… So I can’t even go right now. I’m hoping next week. Also if I can’t find an affordable implant within a year. My teeth are at high risk for shifting. Or the top tooth can push itself out. It’s one implant for something that isn’t my fault. It’s not fair. Bc if the worst happens, I doubt a lot of what needs to be done to fix it. Will cost more out of pocket than I can afford. It seems cheaper to cover the implant. So hopefully I don’t have to worry about those risks.

@@randymarsh8974 I'm sorry that you didn't get what you needed as a child. I made sure my kids were taken care of in that department. My son's teeth were all over but luckily his dad has good insurance. He got braces and my ex paid a monthly bill but got 100% of the money back! My son was born missing a canine tooth so they can't implant it until he is an adult. He doesn't seem to care as he is 21 now but has a great job like his dad. I wasn't the best mom but I think my kids are great adults. My son is still learning. My daughter is 31 and has my 8 year old grandson and thank goodness has perfect teeth! Thank goodness because my ex raised her, he kept her on his medical and dental but his new gf found out and had her cut off right when she had work done so it looked like it went through then all of a sudden she owed over $800!

I am so sorry. I hope you feel better soon. I had all my teeth pulled the end of February. At low income dental clinic. The charge for removing was based on income. My infection had spread as far as yours. But it was in the bone in my jaw. They removed pieces of infected bone and teeth too. You have to these teeth pulled as soon as possible. It took calling places and Google. To get them pulled but I feel so much better now. Eventually sometime in the future I will get dentures.

Thanks for describing the TYPES of abscesses. The catch-all "accessed tooth" is VERY often used to refer to gum abscesses that do NOT directly impact the tooth. Very quick, substantial swelling (< 12 h) is GENERALLY not tooth associated.

I have an abscess on the outside of a 3d printed crown, on the gum.
I'm incredibly frustrated because my current dentist and previous dentist were unable to perform a proper root canal. Both root canals have crowns, the teeth seem to "float" and rise in the mornings, when I clinch my teeth, the two crowns have risen higher than the other teeth when I bite down, they slowly squish and go back being level with the adjacent teeth.
One tooth has signs of issues near the jaw bone, now. I have asked to have the first crown/tooth removed, they referred me to oral surgeon who said there was nothing wrong with the tooth or the work performed. The second tooth on the opposite bottom jaw is doing the exact same thing. I have already contacted the dentest, they said it needed more time to settle down. I gave up because I'm sick and tired of them not doing what I asked and now it's causing more problems, I just realized I have this huge abscess on the outer gum, it's not painful, I just can't get these teeth to seat and remain calm with the rest of my teeth. I've been dealing with this for over 5-6 years.
I had also asked both dentists to post the crowns at the time of the proceedure, both of them opposed doing that, had they put in the post like my other posted crown, I feel this wouldn't be an issue, today.
I don't know what to do. I've been having heart palptations for a long time now and it seems to have started around the time of the first crown that started giving me the floating issue. I've gone to a heart specialist and he said it's normal and I've had the palptations all my life but didn't notice it. That's not true.

Unfortunately my abscess happed as a result of a re root canal (had zero symptoms before this, just something seen in xray), and 4 days into antibiotics zero improvement increased swelling all along jawline. I look like the elephant man. I’m assuming this means the re root canal failed and I need this pain and pressure with extreme swelling to stop. I can’t open my mouth fully so can’t eat much. I had bad infection in one of my teeth. My symptoms were similar to what you are describing. When I went to dentist the tooth had to be pulled. The infection spread beyond the tooth into the bone. Call the dentist office or go to the ER at the hospital. These things can make you really sick.

@@angelaschaefer5883 Thanks so much for your reply. I saw Endo this morning & they rushed me into oral surgery to remove the tooth due to cellulitis.
They told me if the swelling in my neck that is so bad it’s impacting my ability to swallow doesn’t resolve then I will need to have my neck cut open to drain more & be admitted to the hospital for IV antibiotics.
This can be very serious and I’m glad I stayed on top of it knowing something just wasn’t right with such extreme swelling and no relief after 3 days of antibiotics.

@@juliabauer7654 This is actually how I got in this situation. Back in 2018 I had a cracked tooth and the dentist placed a crown on it. Turns out that with time the tooth died (pulp/roots) don’t know the whole lingo, and that’s why I had an abscess with no pain.
I finally got the root canal last week and they made a hole in the crown to take out all the dead stuff. They ended up removing the crown. I just got it placed back in yesterday instead of getting a new one. I hope that is ok to do..??
I asked on how long it would take for the infection to go away and I wasn’t given a straightforward answer..I’m just done with dentists 😞
I think it’s definitely better to try to keep your own tooth if it’s salvageable. It sounds like they would do a root canal first before placing the crown so you’d skip all the drama I went through.

However, the presnece of decay that leads to a pulp polyp can potentially lead to an abscess if the decay progresses or if there is additional trauma or infection according to KRISS. I suggest you consult with your dentist ASAP 😔

I know things like this are scary. I am telling you through experience. You can have no pain and the infection can spread. Without you realizing it. Please see dentist don't wait. I wished I would have done it. Because I didn't I lost all of them in February.

You probably are like I am no insurance or money. Google low income dental care. The state and town you live in. There should be charities and low income dental clinics to call. I found low income dental clinic to pull the tooth. They charged based on income. If that doesn't work call your County Health Department. Ask if they have dental clinic. They charge based on income. They can pull the tooth for you. These things can spread without you realizing it. Into bone and damaging healthy teeth. Please find someone to pull it.

I really appreciate you making this video. My ex of 7 years cheated and gave me Genital warts during our relationship and I was devastated. You've made me feel so much better Dr.ubarlo and seeing all these people share their testimonies about your cure❤
