In a way, that's happening already. Take me for example, being in a country that barely receives any coverage of NASCAR, it's probably not surprising that I hadn't heard of Alan Kulwicki before 2020. However, with the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and suddenly having a lot more time to look at other forms of Motorsport, I stumbled upon his remarkable story and championship win in 1992. His triumph against the odds left me so impressed that he has become one of my favourite drivers in any motorsport anywhere, so much so that I purchased a t-shirt depicting his iconic white and orange Hooters sponsored #7 Ford Thunderbird on the front and his various accomplishments on the back, including 1986 Rookie of the year, 1992 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Champion, 2002 inductee into International Motorsport Hall of Fame and 2019 Inductee into NASCAR Hall of Fame :)

Even though Alan's life and career were tragically cut short more than a quarter-century ago, he had an impact on NASCAR that will last forever. Alan was the first Cup Series champion to graduate from college (earning his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1977), and he also brought a knowledge of engineering that is more pivotal in NASCAR today than ever before. He may not be with us today, but Alan always will be a true Hall of Famer.

Does ANY other Cup champion since then have a college degree? I know Ryan Newman has one, and one in the same field at that, but he's never been a champion.

So very well-deserved. I was crushed when Alan died. Being a fan of his felt so rewarding when he won the championship. He was truly one-of-a-kind. How many stock car drivers would push their own car across the start finish line just to finish a race??? (I believe that was at the Glen) It's also great to see the old championship crew included as part of the induction. It was a magic season.

its hard to say, because look how quickly technology changed afterwards (ironically thanks to Kulwicki) could he have been able to keep up with Hendrick who was able to dump an infinite amount of money to hire a bunch of Kulwicki's?

I love that the dislike for Gordon is still so strong years after he retired. Do y’all not get the fact that all the ribbing that Dale Sr gave Jeff early on was his way of starting to pass the torch? One of the best natural talents to ever sit behind a steering wheel sees this kid, out of all the drivers he’s seen come up, he sees this Gordon kid and immediately knows “This kid is next.”
Nobody is going to look down on you for telling the truth: you don’t like him because he’s not a southerner, that he’s not a good-old-boy that likes huntin’ and fishin’, that he’s too “mainstream”….but quit acting like he also wasn’t one of the best to ever sit behind a wheel.

    • @MR-vf1fw

@@zlinedavid Kulwicki and Richmond were not Southerners either. In fact Kulwicki was a college educated northerners. Richmond was from Sandisky Ohio, and was probably better than Earnhardt. Even Earnhardt admitted that.
