For Vanquish, cigarette thing actually had other use than looking cool. Robots there track heat, so throwing cigarette would actually create slight distraction, as robots look at the heat source. Also in original Metal Gear Solid you could smoke to reveal lasers, which was also pretty useless, because you got thermal googles early enough to not really need to smoke and thermal goggles were way better for that. Also for funny tips, UbiSoft actually "borrowed" theirs from World of Warcraft, where you had same tip on loading screen well before UbiSoft put it there. Dunno if WoW was original source of it. The Scrolls of Icarian Flight. They give you +1000 to acrobatics for 7 seconds. You can jump across the map but the fall damage will kill you. They actually have a few good uses and there are ways to survive the fall.

The smoking is actually helpful in vanquish. It diverts enemy gunfire as it flies, and can be useful when fighting against weapons like rockets

If your fish die enough times in Mass Effect EDI will suggest an automatic feeder. Afterwards they won't die anymore.
