Not just that she understood the culture although that is important, but Vito had a virtuous wife that would stick with him through thick and thin, not abandon him when things get rough like Kay did to Michael. Nor would Carmella do something so vehemently disgusting, (no matter one's opinion on the morality of abortion), just out of spite the way Kay did to Michael. 2:01 The look on Kate's face. Multiply that times five and that would have been the look my beloved Mother (R.I.P.) would have given my Dad had such a thing just happened.
There are 2 perfect explanations, as to why the marriages of Vito and Michael are so disparate. 1a. Vito made a conscious decision, with intent, he entered that world, eyes wide open, to successfully establish then run family business. 1b. This was not Michael's choice, it was thrust upon him. He would have probably preferred the original plan his father had for him. Senator, Governor Corleone, or a plan of his own his own. As CEO of a legitimate corporation... Still a Don, just by another name. This is evident by what he says in the beginning, but also the next reason... The wives, and in what order. 2a. In the beginning Michael is no just trying to convince Kay that he is not of that world "That's my father Kay, that's not me" He's also convincing himself. If none of the rest occurred, he most probably would have married Kay, as Senator or CEO, they might have had a better marriage, or not. They do seem a bit mismatched. If he entered political arena, their marriage would most likely be like many political marriages. A business arrangement. "It's just business" ... neat huh. As we know though, the future events did happen. He got drawn into that world, by Sonny's death, and Fredo's... "I'm smart... not like everybody says..." Once he whacks Solozzo, and the Police Capt goes on the run to the "Old Country" He's now heir to... Capo di Tutti Capi. Enter, then quickly exit Apollonia. She is who would have been Michael's Carmela. She understands that world, it's all around her. She would have been popping out the kids to keep the family going. No NYC Upper East/West Side [ I know for sure they're definitely some in Stamford CT] ...WASP, would let her kids, whack anything, and most definitely, not themselves... Blindness. When Michael comes back and does the whole Kay booty call, it's doomed before it began the 2nd time. She did try, a little bit. It's just not in the DNA. Blonde hair, blue eyes, straight white teeth with a bit of an over bite, and a propensity to look down their nose, even while looking up, and a fear of anything work adjacent... ALL of that's in their DNA. Luca Brasi. Murder...nah. They leave that to the Catholics. Funny how that one worked out. She gets the kids in the divorce, and the WASP indoctrination camps in Stamford, will wash out all the Catholic in them. Part II is in the 50s after all. Here's why number 1 is so crucial. Michael, didn't want this. He's angry, and sullen. It's his cross to bear. Apollonia, would be there as support. He wouldn't have to worry is she gonna leave, take the kids. He shoulda been the conversation piece at cocktail parties. The CEO who's father's big in the [whispered] ....mafia Here, he's having to take care this Hyman Roth, Moe Greene bullshit... Oh, and whack his brother. Can Kay wrap her mind around that one? Then there's the abortion. That's the only one the Catholics won't kill. [JK] Kay, he has to keep her at arms length, the first sign of gun play, she bolts. He's lashing out because, dammit That's my father Kay, that's not me." I should have been coaching Little League, going to PTA meetings, with hemorrhoids, and gout. Not living in Tahoe, and going to Havana. He hates his life. He hates it even more because the wife he needed, got blown up. 2b. All I will say about Carmela, is you would never hear ... "You go see your kids, before you stand in line, to pay respect to your brother"... come out of Kay's mouth. Carmela, Apollonia is the wife a person in that position requires, cherishes. Without them, you get Part III
The orange from Florida was brought to Michael by Johnny Ola, not [0:30] Jimmy Ola. The scene where Vito refuses the box of groceries in The Godfather II, was the most touching scene in the trilogy. Not many of those in this cinematic genre. Good idea to tackle this angle of the story. Kudos to you.
I have to think if the mafia exact as was were to be today, I don't see how any mobster would be married today given how many women are today. Carmella wasn't obedient, she was lovingly loyal and that's extremely rare today
This is a great scene, but for me, nothing tops the heart-to-heart between Vito and Michael in the arbor in Part 1. It is performed as perfectly as can possibly be done.
The part with Deniro as The Don was the best part. My grandparents came here with nothing from Calabria. My grandfather started out as a water boy for the Irish workers who were building New York's roads. They'd yell out 'Guinea, give us some water'. He took it for a few years and decided he wanted to be selling them drinks so he saved his money and bought a bar. He worked hard for his family. My grandma did her part in the home, raising children, being very cautious with money and filling the home with good food and an immaculate environment. At some point, the mafia tried to force my grandfather to put in cigarette machines in the bar. If he didn't let them, they'd destroy his bar. I'm not sure how he did it, but he refused and stood up to them. He never did put their machines in. But the family was the most important thing in my grandparents lives. Even after all of the children grew up and got married, they would bring their grandchildren and spouses back home every Sunday for a big meal. It was very special growing up that way, with grandparents, parents, brothers sisters and cousins.
The 1st time I watched part 2, I was disappointed thinking that it didn't measure up to the 1st. A couple of years later, I gave it another look & it registered with me, particularly DeNiro's portrayal of young Vito. Great film!
For me the best scene is young Vito's arrival to America. Even after repeated viewings I about tear up .looking at the faces of all those immigrants. It touches me as my grandfather came here from Eastern Europe in 1913 probably on a similar ship.

Totally agree with your insights! When i think of Italians i think of family and food very similar to my culture! Even now, the generation gaps are so different in values, custom and beliefs! Altho both Don's value family, Vito showed his all the way around, while Michael was stuck in the past of his immediately family, forgetting his future family! Maybe if he had a tight family, life would have turned out differently in the end! Ty for ur rendition
I do agree The Godfather 2 is one of the most put together and that's one of the best movies I've ever seen and I got about 60 the most beautiful saying to me was is what he went into that hospital Godfather 1 and see that his father was not protected Godfather 2 a beautiful scene is when he was having a conversation with his mother
🤦🤦🤦🤦. No! I think you’re missing a major piece of the puzzle. It’s easy to look at Michael as a bad father and a bad husband, Because it’s there in front of face… And it’s easy to see he Vito loved his wife kids, because it’s so seductively hidden. . Still, Vito chose a life of crime… That life of crime cost him Sonny; Made his daughter into a “little giny (sp) spoiled brat” that we see Vito’s wife scold… That life of crime pulled Michael into the same void his father chose, he had every opportunity to get out of it. We have to stop looking at Vito as such an admirable character over Michael … The point of the godfather is how seductive it all is. The two sides. I think it’s in the accident that the Godfather two ends up bringing out the more violent aspects and shys away from the more tender sides… That said let’s not even talk about the godfather three which was really just nothing more than a cluster fuck 🤣🤣🤣.
Makes total sense, great points! I just wanted to make an analysis showing the contrast between Michael and Vito in terms of personality. But thanks for the comment and feedback, I'm starting in this RUclips world so it's really nice to have a conversation and different point of views about my videos! Thanks again!
The best scene is at the end of II, the birthday party for Don Corleone when Michael says he joined the Marine Corps and Sonny says “ Did you go to college to get stupid, your really stupid”
The scene with Michael and Fredo, with Fredo in the recliner; John Cazale, the actor playing Fredo, was dying in real life, and was being nursed by his girlfriend, Meryl Streep. No one knew just how serious his illness was, if they knew about it at all.
Appolonia would have been a better wife for Michael the mob boss. Michael and Kay would have probably had a good marriage if Michael had stayed legit and gotten into politics or been a lawyer or something like that. Kay was an American woman who went to college and had a job as a teacher. They are just a little more apt to voice their opinions and break a guys balls as politically incorrect as that may sound. Appolonia was Sicilian she likely had more old world values and would have been happy being a wife and stay at home mother and staying out of Michael's business affairs. She was from a mafia area of Sicily so this would not be anything new to her.
Michael started out, and with his father's endorsement and plan, to be an American, not a Sicilian, to be the family's rapid breakthrough into a still sort-of WASP establishment. A rapid and ambitious rise from poor immigrant to "senator, governor, something" in only one generation. He serves in the war, for many, and certainly in America's self-perception, a crucible that started to merge many of the European immigrant identities with those of the former mainstream of Anglo society. And a service that separates him from his brother Sonny and, even, from his father's values although with his support. Becoming romantically involved with a WASP middle class teacher from outside the city was a part of that transformation- a wider sense of romantic possibilities as of social and economic ones. But she was always a poor choice for him temperamentally, but they were too young and in love to see it. Their conversation at Connie's wedding foretold everything, even had he not risen to be Don. Once he did, their marriage was doomed. Carmela wasn't exactly criminal mol material, but she was a trad Sicilian wife archetype who probably understood plenty of what Vito did but considered it normal. Kay could never do that.
Thank you for not even mentioning the disgraceful third movie. It should be burned and buried never to be affiliated with the first two masterpiece works of art.
NOW... I DO AGEE THE GODFATHER 2 one of the best crime and mafia movies in history has ever been made tulip doesn't Godfather 1 and 3 by star even by accident with your eyes closed
Vito became a thief and a robber after being fired from his job. Then with those connections with his other criminal friends built a powerful organization. Please do not make him look so innocent.
a big role in Michaels change of character was that he married kay instead of Sicilian wife like Apollonia. Kay is an American independent feminist woman which has different values from a Sicilian woman like Apollonia or Carmela Corleone. Carmela was in harmony with Vito because they had similar values and didn't have the conflicts that Michael and kay had in their relationship which ultimate caused kay to abort Michael's unborn son and eventually resenting kay, killing a part of Michael in the process and completely shatter what semblance of relationship they had.
Wrong. Apollonia was a manipulative goldigger who married an elderly man who she found ugly for money. She was semiliteral, primitive, profoundly stupid imbecile who can't memorize seven days in a week in a roll. She was a shamless vixen in bedroom. She had no decency, integrity, or scrupulous. She was a juvenile, spoiled immature brat with attention span of a moth She didn't wanna be Italian wife she wanted to be American wife. She didn't cook, clean, she never even made them a breakfast. She was opposite from Carmela. Carmela herself didn't like her.
Kay, on the other hand was a stayed at home. She became full blown sicilian woman. She gave him home and happiness. " I am very happy with my wife and children. My son is 3 years old and already reading funny pages "..... Words that could never come out of Michael's mouth had he been married to a goldigger. Kay didn't leave bc she was a modern feminist. She left bc she didn't wanna be married to mafia and bc she didn't want her son to become one. Anthony already started acting like little mafioso so she acted like responsible mother should. Carmela stood back and watched Vito destroy all her children. Kay saved her son. And point of the story is not for him to have someone who will facilitate his mafia behavior but someone who will bitch slap him into sanity.

Thank you so much!
The message of the Godfather. You have presented it beautifully.
Thank you so much for the feedback!
Thank you so much for your comment and feedback!
That's quite an observation, love it.
Thank you so much!
Well done. Your narration goes well with the presentation
Thank you so much for the feedback, it really made me happy!
Great commentary and insight thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for the feedback!
Many thanks, My Brother. God bless.
One of the best movies
The Godfather II is simply the greatest sequel ever made. Period.
God fathers ,are the masterpiece of the movie history ,though they are a narration of earlier American history as well,
Rober de Niro was the master of aching in godfather 2
The best scene is at the end of II, the birthday party for Don Corleone when Michael says he joined the Marine Corps and Sonny says “ Did you go to college to get stupid, your really stupid”
Just discovered you and was fully absorbed watching its content. Looking forward to more. Thankyou❤️👏🌈❤️
Thank you so much!
The best of the trilogy was Part Two. Why? Because the Fredo character. The acting and story was very touching.
Absolutely correct.
Beautiful. Thank you.
Thank you for the feedback!
The Godfather of the movies
The scene with Michael and Fredo, with Fredo in the recliner; John Cazale, the actor playing Fredo, was dying in real life, and was being nursed by his girlfriend, Meryl Streep. No one knew just how serious his illness was, if they knew about it at all.
Ehh ti saluto Abbandando... Most badass enter ever! Don Fannuci... I always liked him 🖤
My favorite movie godfather triolgy
Well said. Great commentary
Thank you so much for the feedback!
Nice job!
Well done, my friend.
Thank you so much for your feedback!
That was the look of disdain at 1.59
very well said.
Good narration and explanation. Godfather 1 & 2 amongst the best movies ever made.
Thank you so much! I couldn't agree more.
The sons were all parts of the whole.
Sonny- charismatic, tough, a fighter
Fredo- kind, caring, loving
Micheal - intelligent, cunning, ruthless.
Michael wasn't ruthless
Love it!
Thank you so much!
Lets all be honest here.. we all want someone like Carmela Corleone
If he had brought her an orange instead of the pear I'd be a little nervous
Awesome!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Outstanding. 🤙
Glad you enjoyed it!
Truly the best movie ever
Who is 'Jimmy Ola?"
My mistake man, Johnny Ola is the correct name. Won't happen again.
So what was the most beautiful scene after all?
This whole sequence is beautiful, but the moment I appreciate the most is when Vito gives Carmela a pear.
Who is Arnold West?
Best film ever
You are probably right!
Godfather 3 never gets it's due
This one and Scarface.
The best.
The orange represents danger.
Love the accent man. Which is it? Hispanic?
Thanks! Brazilian!
A well said video.
Thank you so much! It really means a lot.
In the novel Sonny saw Vito kill Fanucci.
Why did Hyman Roth give Michael a orange?
I eat pears cuz of this scene and wonder if females who watch me get the hint yet
Thank you for not even mentioning the disgraceful third movie. It should be burned and buried never to be affiliated with the first two masterpiece works of art.
It has its values, come on! Hahahah
I disagree. Michael at the end sobbing with no noise and then sound....his cry for his daughter. Beautifully directed.
This is why if you can you should live legit because look at the carnage vanucci caused in the future he basically created the godfather
NOW... I DO AGEE THE GODFATHER 2 one of the best crime and mafia movies in history has ever been made tulip doesn't Godfather 1 and 3 by star even by accident with your eyes closed
As a matter of fact the only thing that was missing from Godfather 2 with Marlon Brando
100% agree
Vito became a thief and a robber after being fired from his job. Then with those connections with his other criminal friends built a powerful organization. Please do not make him look so innocent.
A man doesn't spend time with his family Can never be a real man.
DON VITO CORLEONE il Padrino
i come from the school off thought that says part 2 is superior to part 1
Porqué no interpretaron el video en español?
W.O.W.
a big role in Michaels change of character was that he married kay instead of Sicilian wife like Apollonia.
She was a juvenile, spoiled immature brat with attention span of a moth
She didn't wanna be Italian wife she wanted to be American wife.
