  • This is a deleted scene from The Godfather sourced from The Godfather Trilogy 1901-1980. This scene takes place between Sollozzo's call to Sonny and Sollozzo's conversation with Tom. In this scene, Sonny goes home to his mother to tell her about Vito's situation and calls Tessio to get fifty men over to the house. He tries to call Luca Brasi, but he is already dead at the hands of the Tattaglias.

    Love how Sonny knew Tessio's (a caporegime) phone number by heart... but then has to go to his father's safe to look up Luca Brasi's number. It's like opening a safe that contains the nuclear launch codes.

      In the novel, the only man that Don Vito feared was Luca Brasi. Still, Brasi was fanatically loyal to the Godfather. I *highly* recommend the novel to any movie fans. The cliche of book and movie is extremely true for The Godfather, as hard as it may be to believe. Lots of extra story, too. It shows Vito's uncanny genius much better. He's damn near telepathic reading people and situations.

Showing Caan "going through the motions" of what would revealed later (for instance, we already know Brasi's dead, and it's revealed to the family with the dead fish any a more cinematic way).

    Just for the record. And In case people haven’t read the book. Sonny was smart very very smart and as smart as Michael and the godfather. The book talks of him as a tactical genius akin to Napoleon. The movie has a deleted scene where he tests Michael by asking him who betrayed the Don. Pauline or Clemenza.
    Sonny knew it was Paulie. He also fought the 5 families to a stalemate. Sonny only had one fatal flaw. He couldn’t manage his emotions. His mouth revealed his thoughts and his temper led to his death.
    Michael and the don could get angry but they could manage it.
    Ultimately Sonny was the ideal underboss. Respected and feared but needed someone to hold his leash.

      I 100% agree. Coppola chopped most of Caan's good scenes as Sonny, and even so, Sonny's character is still iconic in the movie. Really gutted that Sonny's screentime was minimal, since the novel describes how he was on top on the Five Families war, how of a brilliant "war general" and strong was during the conflict, and his rise through the family ranks as Capo during a past assesination attempt on Vito and how he was feared on the streets (not Luca Brasi level, but still).
      In the movie he mostly comes as a hot headed and not so brilliant guy (for example how he revelated his thoughs on the Sollozzo meeting and how he rushed from the compound alone, without bodyguards, in the middle of a mafia war)... so much wasted potential.

    This is the one that should have been kept. Mama was emotionally prepared for this. Sonny wasn't. Hes surprised by her reaction and finds comfort in bread instead of from his mother. Doesn't sit in his father's chair. Doesn't want Clemenzas people because Paulie is in that regime and that's who he suspects. This also showed Sonny as more than just a hothead. Uncertain, sad, reverent, suspicious. Not just angry and aggressive.

    • @fridakahlo4225
      @fridakahlo4225 3 года назад +3

      So well said. Maybe this is exactly why they left out that part. Maybe Coppola did not want to represent Sonny more than a hothead. He wanted people to percieve Michael as 'the golden boy' or 'the best of the Corleone brothers' by making the other two look like dumper than they actually are. As a matter of fact, I can't even recall a scene where we see Sonny alone. He is always surrounded by his sidekicks and we hardly ever hear any good dialogue from him. Even Clemenza has a famous motto: leave the gun, take the cannoli. Sonny has none. The film portrays him as a shallow, violent person with anger management issues and that's all we are ever to find out about him.

    Ironic that Sonny trusted Tessio more than Clemenza during a moment of crisis...when it was Tessio who would ultimately betray the family.

    After rereading the book it is a shame they basically cut out Mama Corleone from the final cuts of the movies. She was background but such an interesting piece of the story. It was her who brought Kay and Michael back together once again and was the heart of the family.

    This scene is my favorite of the deleted scenes. It shows perfectly why Santino didn't have it. He's doing some right things mechanically, but he lacks the focus, and we have the feeling that he isn't really in charge.
    He starts eating just when his mother leaves. He doesn't use the godfather's chair. He puts the phone aside when dialing. When he walks he looks unfocused, unlike Michael.

    Mario Puzo said he wanted to write either another film or novel ... I can’t remember which ... about Sonny’s life before all this took place. As those who have read the novel know, Sonny saw his father kill Fanucci ant that’s when Vito realized Sonny would enter the life as well.

      William Anthony - I recall reading that they had to keep the length of the entire film under a certain time to accommodate the theatres, so Coppola was forced to delete scenes that were not essential to the story.

      I like this scene as it shows how Tessio's men and Clemenza's men were separate units, and informs the viewer that at this specific moment, Sonny had already deduced that the hit on Vito was done via a leak on Clemenza's side. He just didn't know yet whether the traitor was Clemenza himself or Paulie the bodyguard.

      Actually, your assumption is wrong. The movie was supposed to be no longer than 2 hrs 10 mins or the studio would cut the movie how they saw fit. The director showed a 30 minute portion of the video which seemed like only a trailer, hence the 3 hr length was approved. Back in the day, if the movie was over 3 hrs, the cinema had to have an intermission. They wanted to avoid that but whole heartedly wanted to keep all the deleted scenes. This was directly out of Puzo'S mouth.

    • @flyboy152
      @flyboy152 3 года назад

      Because the movie was already nearly 3 hours without all these scenes. Coppola had to fight to keep plenty of the other scenes in. Movie theaters did not like to show movies that were this long, they would lose an entire show each day.

    Watching this scene you are impressed by the attention to details in the book. With Sonny making himself a sandwich after telling his mom. I can't help but compare it to the JJ Abrams travesty of Star Trek reboots. You can tell he never watched an episode of the original series or read anything about them. A good director is everything to a movie. If its not true to the story, it means nothing. Francis Ford Coppola was a master director
