Have you reviewed the HP Spectre x360 15 Gem Cut with 4GB dedicated graphics? I'd love a comparison with it and the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme for content creation. I'm leaning towards the Extreme because of AMAZING keyboard and getting a cheaper version of the Microsoft Surface Pro for 2-in-1 mobility (personal use, not content creation because no Thunderbolt 3 😫).
The HP is technically a 2-in-1, but it seems too heavy to use as a tablet, just laptop and tent mode. Although, I love that it has a full size keyboard, but I wish it had a full size SD card slot.
Thoughts? What do you know about reliability Lenovo vs. HP? The Extreme seems way easier to service and customize.

Glad to see the P72 reviewed by a large channel like yours. Has to be a first for this model. I have the P72 since several months now. It is great workhorse, no doubt. Note that the 4K panel is only 8-bit and not 10: the marketing material is wrong and misleading. Also in one the slides says that the panel is touch, which of course it is not. The matte 17" is super comfortable to work on. The P72 is a great machine for users that need a big screen, lots of storage and ram (up to 128GB !), powerful Pro GPUs. Also adequate if you do not want compromises on thermals and do not require thin and light. And if you do not need a dGPU (like me) you can spec the unit with a Quadro P600 that won't break the bank. Finally, I will add that the P72 works exceptionally well on Linux: I use it on that system full time and with repeated but moderate duration workloads (compilation) the unit stays perfectly cool and quiet (helped by a 0.135mv underclock). Please review the HP Zbook G5 17 and the Dell Precision 7730 (its direct competitors) if possible!

Depending on pricing, I would stick with the Xeon processor in the P1.
As of me writing this, the price difference between two identically equipped P1's (one with the Xeon and the other with the i7-8850H) is roughly $100 CDN. Don't forget, Lenovo seemly has sales every hour. For that $100, you get 3mb more L3 cache (although I don't know how useful that is), a slightly faster clock speed, and ECC memory support. You also get the Xeon branding, which may be useful if/when you go to sell the laptop later on.
If you are planning on using the laptop for heavy workloads, or are greatly concerned about thermal throttling, you probably shouldn't be looking at a thin and light laptop to begin with. A thicker 15" workstation laptop would serve one's needs better, while maintaining some level of portability.

I got a P1 and I am super happy with it!! I run multiple VMs server software for research and showcasing demos for clients and peers in my field...with large volumes of data and the P1 performs good and it is awesome to carry around... I call my P1 as my light weight Monster & Hulk...
I have had it for 4 months now and did get the legendary blue screen 2 times during various months and choose to ignore it. since I was not even running my VM servers while it happend .. I will call Lenovo if it happens frequently...
Great Points Matt - thanks sir!
BTW I still own a T400 with 8 GB RAM which I purchased in 2018 which still works fine ...Thinkpads Are Awesome!!

I own a P72. These are great laptops that you can get with pretty impressive configurations that won't cost an arm and a leg. For example, I purchased one with an i-7 (8750), 64GB of RAM, & the 4K monitor. I went ahead and purchased separately a 2TB M.2 SSD (Samsung EVO 970) and 2TB SATA 2.5 inch (EVO 860), all for the price of under $3100.00. A similarly priced Mac Pro with these specs would cost over $7,000.00. The build quality is impeccable. Yes, Moniz, I love the "thickness" and the "nipple".

I have a P51 and it has the same touch pad as the P52/P72 and the Lenovo Synaptic drivers installed include Windows precision support and touch action is good, comparable with my old MacBook Pro , so I am surprised the P72 you have doesn't. I had quite a few issues with getting some benchmarking software to use the Quadro GPU. Often they were defaulting to the internal Intel P630 graphics processor, and I had to use the NVidia control panel to force an application to use the Quadro GPU. I found the simplest approach was to go into the BIOS and switch it to discrete graphics mode, effectively disabling the P630 processor and forcing the laptop to use the Quadro GPU all the time. This was especially the case with an eGPU. I agree using a Quadro card in an eGPU is simplest approach with a P1, as it will make use of the default Lenovo graphics drivers, but I have used the GTX 1070 eGPU (Aorus Gaming Box). This is when things get interesting, because in my case the applications had an option of using either P630, Quadro M2200 or GTX1070. In theory, NVidia control panel allows you to select from any of the three GPUs, but it wasn't always that simple. You have to install Geforce drivers for the GTX 1070 to work, which if you are not careful overwrite the Quadro drivers. The Quadro GPU will run with GeForce drivers, but you then lose all the benefits of Quadro special driver / application support. It is possible to manually install the NVidia drivers so the GTX 1070 uses the GeForce drivers, the Quadro card uses the Quadro drivers, but that works best if you disable the P630, use external display from the eGPU for the GTX 1070, and laptop display for the Quadro. The fun doesn't end there, because Lenovo Advantage software will automatically install latest Lenovo graphics drivers, undoing your original hard work, unless you remember to disable auto upgrades. As a consequence, when the eGPU's PSU failed under warranty I returned it and got a refund, and didn't bother with getting a replacement! For me, the jury is still out on Thunderbolt 3 eGPU support and cost Vs benefit. I love the concept, but currently it feels simpler and less time consuming to have separate gaming rig and productivity / work laptop.

In my research of finding an adequate laptop, I always find that there is yet again another model that is better, slimmer, more powerful, and has "16% more processing power."
I then think "time to save up for that" until I reach a point where I am stuck with a 2011 mammoth Thinkpad W520 (pre P series) and a 2017 MacBook Air and huungry for an upgrade. Last year, I was looking at a Legion Y540; last month, a refurb'd P50 (i7 6th gen); a week before that, seriously toying around with the idea of an Asus Zenbook Pro Duo; last week an X1 Carbon 7th gen; yesterday, considering a refurb'd 2020 MB Pro (when the time comes); and now, a Thinkpad P1, which I've never heard of before but consider me a huge fan (minus MacOS, this is the ideal laptop). What to do? So many different models that it's hard to make a decision. Oh all the friggin' choices and places you'll go!
    Sincerely,
    Conflicted conscious consumer
PS. I forgot the Surface Studio 2, Lenovo Yoga A940, Thinkcentre M920...
Who else will join me in the quest to find the perfect computer and to end this endless desire for devices once and for all?

For me, the quality of the speakers (sound and placement) is a primary parameter I consider when looking for another laptop. I've had enough experience with under-developed speakers to conclude that it is a major determinant during research. Music is life.
ThinkPads are historically associated with the practical, business-minded consumer. Yes. But audio is a huge part of my professional life as well as leisure time.
Give me something I can work with out the box. It's not disadvantage to their machines to give sound quality a higher priority when the next redesigns drop. Please Lenovo. Place them on top and determine an above average hw-sw audio combo to match the computational performance of your mobile workstations.

compared to the P72 the P52 is more limited in hardware options, also its 4k display is a shiny touch screen, while the P72 has a matte 4k display
so unless you need the integrated mobile internet antenna or the smaller, more portable dimensions, the P72 is simply better than the P52

Guys, I wanted to give you my opinion, so I bought the P1. I ordered a
custom 1, but the screen touch, I guess, drains the battery after
    2-3hours. I bought i7vpro8th gen, 32ram, 1tb SSD with prof-windows v and
nvdia pq2000 graphics card. I think it comes? 1000 - 1500$ cheaper than
MacBook pro same configuration. I decided to return it back b/o that,
but their service moves so slow. Forget about the US companies where
they treat their customer as the king. I am afraid that I am not able to
return it anymore, or that they are not going to fulfill their
engagement in the future. I have been using it for about 3 weeks. I was
so naive to order another one, but w/o touch screen and only 1/2 SSD.
Battery seems to last a couple of hours more. I may keep this one. I
used macbookair for 4 years w/o any issues, and their service is just
great. I tried lg, dell 15 xps same configurations before. P1 looks much
better, but I start to worry that I did not go for the macbookpro. I

    Question:
I have a 2016 ThinkPad P50s, I have been a ThinkPad buyer for many years and I love them :-)
Over the past 4 yrs I have become more of a gamer. My P50s performs fairly well, and in the next year or so, I may be in the market for a new laptop. With gaming in mind, I would like to stay with a ThinkPad, instead of the Legion Y730 or whatever equivalent Lenovot may be in the market at that time.
My question is, would buying a Lenovo Legion Y series laptop be more game worthy than a ThinkPad, provided of course I have it built with the right CPU, GPU and RAM?

@@MatthewMoniz I can't wait for your review. I hope you get your hands on one soon. If you do review, can you do a comparison of the Spectre and Extreme?
I'm leaning towards the Extreme because I'm a writer and the Thinkpad keyboards are legendary. It also seems more durable, easier to service, and it can be customized with more RAM. The HP Spectre x360 has a really unique design. I like that it has a full size keyboard, but it's not quite as comfortable as the Thinkpad. The 2-in-1 functionality is great, but it's so heavy. It should mainly be used in laptop and tent mode. It is quite a bit cheaper than the Lenovo, but the trackpad doesn't have precision drivers, like the Extreme. If Dell makes serious updates to the XPS 15, I would consider it. I would also consider the Microsoft Surface Book if they gave it a more powerful GPU to handle video editing and a Thunderbolt 3 port in the next update. I love that the tablet portion can become detached.
Is the Extreme still your top pick for video production?

I know you said the P72 supports touch, does that mean all P72's come with a touchscreen? I didn't see an option?

  • @LotsaPixels
    @LotsaPixels 5 лет назад

I have used both laptops over several weeks and vastly prefer the P1 for its fast speed and small footprint. The P72 is heavy and barely portable in comparison, and both of its dreadfully bad speakers are oddly placed to the upper right of the keyboard. The P1 speakers may be downward firing, but otherwise they are centered and much, much better to tolerate in daily use when my laptop is away from the external speakers and USB AQ DAC I use at my desk.
No amount of color calibration will tame the ridiculously oversaturated colors on the wide gamut screen I got first on the P72, and yes I did get it primarily for content creation. Photoshop is one of the few color managed applications in Windows, but almost everything else isn't. On the P1 I got the Full HD matte screen, which although it has a more limited color gamut, colors look great after calibration with the industry standard x-rite i1 display pro. I set the P2000 GPU to discrete in BIOS (using the latest fixed BIOS that won't brick your machine) and bumped up the color saturation a tad to 54% in the nvidia panel settings with minimal channel blooming. There is even Windows HDR support in RUclips and Netflix using the Edge browser.
As for gaming on the P1, I've played Shadow of the Tomb Raider for hours on high graphics settings with no problem. There is some undesirable motion blur given the display panel's slow response time, but it's a pretty damn good compromise for a laptop primarily intended for content creation.
Regarding P1 overheating and fan noise, I got a twenty dollar dual fan chiller to place underneath the laptop that I switch on during renderings or gaming sessions to lower the temps several degrees and keep things cooler.
Benchmarks for the P5200 are generally about two to three times that of the P2000, but the CPU benchmarks are similar with both machines having the fastest Xeons available.
So, for my needs, I hated and returned the P72 and I loved and kept the P1. Unless you have a really, really specific justification for the P5200 horsepower of the P72, or you must have the matte 4K non-touch display and will only use a small number of color managed applications, I would highly recommend the P1 with Full HD display as the resolution is still beautifully sharp on the 15.6" screen and you won't have many scaling issues like with the 4K one that occasionally may not show video playback without scaling artifacts.
The almost centered trackpad on the P1 is a joy to use and is the best I've ever had, and the smaller keyboard (but slightly larger keys) is easy to type on even if a few of the keys are oddly placed and take a while to get used to.
Overall winner... the P1 by a mile!!! 😌

    • @LotsaPixels
      @LotsaPixels 5 лет назад +1

I'm pretty impressed so far with my P1 with P2000. I've played Shadow of the Tomb Raider for hours on high graphics settings no problem, albeit with a dual fan chiller pad underneath to keep things cooler while gaming or rendering. The P5200 has nearly three times the FurMark benchmark score, but otherwise the weight, size, horrible speaker placement, and oversaturated colors on the 4K wide gamut panel made me return the P72 in favor of the P1 with Full HD display and P2000 GPU. I'm really happy with my choice of the P1. 😊

The keys are not as concave as other Thinkpads and are mushy when typing with no crisp feedback (I'm typing on a x230 right now). I've been using Thinkpads since '95 so I didn't even think about the risk of getting such a lousy keyboard when I ordered my P71 directly form Lenovo. So if Mathew is to be believed, they must have upgraded it for the P72.

Even playing back 10 bit video like that on a uhd or Netflix? I was reading some forums and the display on the x1 extreme is only 8 bit, converting 10 bit video to 8 bit simulating the dolby vision. I can understand the editing part, but the playback of hdr content doesn't make sense. I was hoping you could confirm this.

Cheaping out by removing the optical drive after the P70 lost Lenovo a lot of education sales. There are very important uses for optical especially in child education and as far as ongoing projects for 1st year undergrads. When Sony's high capacity DVDs catch on outside Japan and Korea perhaps such as Lenovo will think again. Plug-in burners use up ports and are susceptible to theft. We cannot justify the extremely high asking prices here with this omission.
As for the P1, why is this video a VS when the machines have such obvious uses and features? The P1 is very poor value all round.
