From the trailer, we can see Peter Jackson's love of horror gave the films just enough darkness/edge this fantasy story needed to capture a wider audience, all without losing the essence of the source material. 20 years later, trailer still gives me goosebumps. 20 years on and still the best trilogy ever.

I remember reading Fellowship at the time and having a difficult go at it, getting about a quarter of the way through it. We went and saw the movie anyway on the day of release. She thought I would be bored of it and fall asleep half way through or something, but the movie hypnotized me. The sequence in the movie, in that theater, when the Fellowship runs through Moria was forever engrained into my synapses. Must've been what seeing Star Wars in 77' was like, because I surely did not have that experience with Phantom Menace.
People in 2000 watching this trailer had absolutely no idea the masterpieces they were all about to witness. Hands down the greatest trilogy of all time.
This movie is just magical. I just can't think of a film that has the same kind of effect on me at the end. It's simultaneously heartfelt, atmospheric, epic, and immersive.
Only a couple of months ago I had the utmost pleasure of watching this absolute masterpiece of a trilogy (extended versions) for the first time, and boy was I sleeping under a rock! The story, characters, battle scenes, emotion, costume design, score and the scale is truly something to behold, I’m so glad I have seen these masterpieces and I will only watch them more and more as I get older. Truly the stuff of legend, these films!!!! Thank You Peter Jackson and the whole crew for these movies. Thank you so very much!!
@@DestinyAwaits19 I read the books after watching the extended versions and I must say I couldn’t now watch the theatrical versions after reading the books, there would be too much missing. I rewatched the extended trilogy after I finished reading and I now have no reason not to watch these versions, they are in my opinion more true to the books. Sure they are slower, but I would rather have longer scenes if it meant spending more time with these characters than having the pacing be a bit too quick.
@@The_Bat_Signal Jackson's movies are NOTHING like the books. Tolkien's legendarium is a tale about faith and virtue, its a gentle and soft romantic tale about how even the smallest person can change the world. The movies, on the other hand, revolve around huge set- piece battles and actions sequences that eviscerates the spirit of the books.
@@The_Bat_Signal And that's why I don't like the extended versions, because I don't like the books either. Jackson's work stands on its own, as a sword and sorcery epic separate from Tolkien. Concerning Hobbits was fluffy and pathetic, so was every other added scene. The extended editions are not how Lord of the Rings is meant to be experienced.
I know many will disagree, but for me, there has never been, before or since, a more technically and emotionally powerful testament to what the art of cinema is capable of than "The Lord of the Rings."
Have you seen Interstellar? I'm a LOTR fan but interstellar is pretty high up there, tbh. I might add Blade Runner 2149 to that list (but see the original first)
This trailer brings back soo many memories from my pre-teens. An yes i have seen the lord of the rings the fellowship of the rings. It's just been soo long
I still remember seeing this advert in theaters when I was 11, I had absolutely no idea what Lord of the Rings was, but my dad had read the books when he was younger and I remember him being even more excited to see it than I was.
@Stenafel I've seen the movies over 50 times and I just happened to watch the trailer now. I'm a bit shocked that the trailer doesn't really give the movie all its glory.
dude, honestly i was a very young child when i saw this in the theaters (the trailer) and thought it was a trailer for a horror movie, to this day i remember it and specifically looked it up just now thinking about it
Peter Jackson began his career filming horror films so it makes sense there's still a bit of that element present. Many parts of the movie are more scares than thrills.
Did the graphics seem incredible for that time? I was too young to be wowed but when I watch other movies from around 2000 the imagery doesn't compare at all!
I think more and more effort is going into trailers these days. With social media and the internet so important to get publicity for a movie, trailers need to hype people up. Good trailers probably weren't as important when this was released
Actually this trailer isn't that bad. The last 30 seconds are actually pretty epic especially with that awesome music. In fact I find it funny how New Line recycled some of the sound effects from the TMNT 1990 & Dark City trailers. There are far worse ones that came out in the 70s that gave away major spoilers (Carrie) or didn't do justice (Star Wars).
I watched the trilogy last weekend for the first time in years and for the first time as a grown up. And boy did I realize: This is the single best, most epic, most well written, WOW MAN story of good vs evil, struggle, despair, hope and friendship there will ever be. A smart person can take so freaking much out of it it's mindblowing. I think I'll read the books for a fifth time now :)
Well I think that depends on wether or not you are the kind of person that can lose himself in epic fantasy. When I first read the books I was only 9 y.o. but I naturally lived the story by reading it in my imagination. It took me almost 4 months back then to finish all 3 books but it didnt matter how fast i progressed. I absolutely lost myself in the amazingly deep detailed world of middle earth. There are parts in the book that are not in the movies, for example Tom Bombadil :) I dont know man you should definitely try them out. But don't read like a 21st century consumer who wants to get the fast kick out of a story. See it as a chance to spend your reading time experiencing Tolkiens magical world in every detail. He was a Professor of English Literature so he knew how to really wright :)
+Eugene Perez it's a little hard to get in but when you do it's just amazing. I read them in a week when I was 14 y.o. Sorry for my bad English I'm a foreigner ^^
I remember the first time I watched this trailer in theaters. I was still in the middle of reading The Two Towers. And in the part where Frodo says, "there's something down there," followed by, "my precious," I got nothing but goosebumps all over me. I knew it was Gollum, and I knew it was gonna be epic.
@suhaskatrahalli3635 The books are not, the films are. They each had seperate pre-production and post production phases despite being filmed back to back. The LotR is a complete work published in 3 volumes, because the original would have been too thick to publish at the time.
I wish I could see this trailer "for the first time" from the perspective of someone who only have read books, to feel those goosebumps after seeing your beloved book and characters on a big screen...
When I first saw the poster at fourteen I had no idea that that would have been the beginning of a lifelong and indissoluble love that would change my life forever. I will never thank you enough, Professor Tolkien.
The biggest reason I love the movies is because when I watched them after reading the books, amazingly, the movies weren't crap. So many movies ruined many books for me that I was terrified to see the trilogy on screen. But I loved every moment. Yes they took some things out and changed others but because they took out small things that wouldn't hurt the movie made me even happier!!!

On Sunday 27th of March, 2022 I watched the Return of the King at The Embassy theatre in Wellington, NZ - the same theatre where the world premiere was held in December of 2003. It was a special screening in light of the recent 20th anniversary of the trilogy itself, with the first two films screening last weekend and the weekend prior. It was such a privilege to see it on the big screen again, especially at The Embassy. Man these films were truly beautiful in every way 💜
20 years ago, on this day, this movie was released and changed cinema forever. It's had such a huge impact on my life especially considering I live in NZ
Came here, after I saw the new Amazon trailer for the Rings of Power. Needed to be reminded on how to make a good trailer and how to make a good Tolkien adaptation. Thank you, Peter Jackson!
I have family who always tries to tell me that Harry potter is better than lotr but I always tell them that everything in Lotr is infinitely more better. Acting, Cast, soundtrack, story, etc. I agree 100% that this is the best trilogy of all time, and I will die on that hill.
I've always really loved this movie. First time i saw it I was totally blown away by the acting, special effects and plot. Still one of my all-time favorite movies!
This trailer gives me chills. Oh heck, the whole trilogy gives me chills. The greatest film series, and series of books of all time. Bless J.R.R Tolkien and Peter Jackson for capturing our imaginations evermore
Imagine Fellowship would have happened in 2019....now in mind never even seeing two towers in cinema how it is looking now....i am so glad i had the chance to experience that greatness!
Peter Jackson actually wanted to adapt The Hobbit first, but he couldn't get permission to do so at the time, so he started with The Lord of the Rings instead. They would've turned out so different if that had been the case.
Seeing "The Trilogy Begins" fills my heart with this unique feeling. Like the balls to say that. Even nowadays where sequels are so prevalent you don't see trailers state how many there are going to be and like you should be excited for it.
I’ve never seen or read LOTR before now. I finished reading The Hobbit, and am now reading Fellowship. I watched this trailer to get a feel for what the movie would be like- and I’m SO EXCITED.

This wasn't just 2001, this trailer was released in late 2000, we're talking Y2K here. It feels ancient. There's outtakes in this trailer which are not in the official movie, and some are lacking their VFX. It's fantastic to see glimpses of FOTR in its half-finished state in this trailer... I was only about 3 years old when this first dropped, and I've been obsessed with LOTR ever since. I attribute the video game for ROTK on GameCube in 2004 to solidifying that. And though I could never truly understand the older sophisticated language, I still remember sneaking down to the school library during lunch just to bug Ms. Woods to help me find the books so I could read them. To this day, I still have that very copy of Fellowship of the Ring from my old school library. I went back when I graduated for it. By then I had already read it about 4 or 5 times, but that's what LOTR means to me. I'm here, even now at this very moment, watching this trailer for the pure nostalgia of a world I once knew, telling you this story because the works of Tolkien transformed my life. And it will transform yours, too, if you have the heart to know the story it wishes to tell.
I remember watching this for the first time! Still my favorite of the three. I guess other generations as kids had Star Trek, Star Wars etc. I'm so glad we had this!

I never seen these movies. I couldn’t get past that cancerous looking thing that kept saying precious.
@@johndough2328 He's the best character of the books and the movie. Jump on in!
@@TttTtt-zo7kt urgh the thing is so annoying lol
People in 2000 watching this trailer had absolutely no idea the masterpieces they were all about to witness. Hands down the greatest trilogy of all time.
20 years and this trailer gave me goosebumps. I felt more watching this than any of the Rings of Powder trailers.
20 years later and still the best trilogy
Apu trilogy. And this trilogy is 66 years old. Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan himself called it as some of the greatest films ever made.
Is it?
Will you recommend me?
@@Nakgtra YES go watch it really the best trilogy a legend
This movie is just magical. I just can't think of a film that has the same kind of effect on me at the end. It's simultaneously heartfelt, atmospheric, epic, and immersive.
How is your life after 7 years?
Hey, Are you alive ?? 🤔
You should have watched the theatrical versions, the way Lord of the Rings was meant to be watched.
@@DestinyAwaits19 well the theatrical versions are less like the books than the extended films that’s what I’m talking about.
21 years ago, and still IS, the best trilogy ever
I know many will disagree, but for me, there has never been, before or since, a more technically and emotionally powerful testament to what the art of cinema is capable of than "The Lord of the Rings."
Guigley Well, anyone who disagrees is an idiot.
***** Oh hai masterpiece!
I agree. To me these are the best of all the films!
You know full well nobody will disagree with your statement you pretentious shit. lol
Have you seen Interstellar? I'm a LOTR fan but interstellar is pretty high up there, tbh. I might add Blade Runner 2149 to that list (but see the original first)
1:30 That line seems pretty cool but I don't think it will spawn any memes or anything...
wow never knew this is how the meme was born
This trailer brings back soo many memories from my pre-teens. An yes i have seen the lord of the rings the fellowship of the rings. It's just been soo long
Who knew at that time, that line would be one of the most famous memes ever.
one does not simply hear that line without refering to the meme
Nit Picker lol
I still remember seeing this advert in theaters when I was 11, I had absolutely no idea what Lord of the Rings was, but my dad had read the books when he was younger and I remember him being even more excited to see it than I was.
Although I've seen the trilogy countless of times, it's the first time i see the trailer :D
Yeah, it looks like its from a low-budget B-movie lol
@Stenafel I've seen the movies over 50 times and I just happened to watch the trailer now. I'm a bit shocked that the trailer doesn't really give the movie all its glory.

I come here again to clean my eyes after watching the teaser of "The Ring of Power"
Me too

Is it just me or does this trailer make the movie look like a horror film?
Acutely it makes it look AWESOME!!!!
dude, honestly i was a very young child when i saw this in the theaters (the trailer) and thought it was a trailer for a horror movie, to this day i remember it and specifically looked it up just now thinking about it
Peter Jackson began his career filming horror films so it makes sense there's still a bit of that element present.
That is an amazingly bad trailer for an epic movie
All the trailers were like this 15 yrs ago...
Training Day, for example
+MERIO Which is funny cause The Hobbit has an amazingly great trailer for a terrible movie.
SwollenHero BOTFA isn't terrible, just dissapointing
+MMG 006 I actually thought all of them were bad. The first less so than the other two.
Watching this after seeing that dud of a trailer for the new Amazon series, and there is a world of difference.
Jup. I just watch it as well and it didnt feld like middle earth. And now I am going to watch all the trailers XD
This was probably the worst trailer ever created for definitely one of the best movie ever...wow
So nice game bec my husband play very well
Trailers are usually that way.
Emerson Nutt lol usually it's the other way around, trailer is great, movie is wack.
Check out the original trailer for Star Wars 1977. I think you might take this comment back
"Not all who wander are lost"
-J.R.R Tolkien
Seeking refuge here, omg it's like night and day
The trailer truly underestimates the movie. Can't believe the trilogy cost less than the first hobbit movie!
TreeroyJ No it was well over $200mil. It' was on the upper end of $315mil actually.
TreeroyJ Its sad that what once cost $281 million the early 2000s now costs $378 million
Inflation.
Lord of the rings is not a trilogy smh
Rofezo mofsco.
I think I'll read the books for a fifth time now :)
is the book really good even if u havent read the book yet? it seems boring :(
Well I think that depends on wether or not you are the kind of person that can lose himself in epic fantasy. When I first read the books I was only 9 y.o. but I naturally lived the story by reading it in my imagination. It took me almost 4 months back then to finish all 3 books but it didnt matter how fast i progressed. I absolutely lost myself in the amazingly deep detailed world of middle earth. There are parts in the book that are not in the movies, for example Tom Bombadil :)
I dont know man you should definitely try them out. But don't read like a 21st century consumer who wants to get the fast kick out of a story. See it as a chance to spend your reading time experiencing Tolkiens magical world in every detail. He was a Professor of English Literature so he knew how to really wright :)
+Threepwoot man i just finished the first book. too bad bc it took me 1 month. but worth it. I am longing for the two towers
So.. how did you like it?
+Eugene Perez it's a little hard to get in but when you do it's just amazing. I read them in a week when I was 14 y.o.
Sorry for my bad English I'm a foreigner ^^
I remember the first time I watched this trailer in theaters. I was still in the middle of reading The Two Towers. And in the part where Frodo says, "there's something down there," followed by, "my precious," I got nothing but goosebumps all over me. I knew it was Gollum, and I knew it was gonna be epic.
Came here after Amazon’s trailer and cried once more
I came here to cleanse my eyes after Rings of Power S2 trailer.

@@suhaskatrahalli3635 it literally is?!?!
@suhaskatrahalli3635 The books are not, the films are. They each had seperate pre-production and post production phases despite being filmed back to back. The LotR is a complete work published in 3 volumes, because the original would have been too thick to publish at the time.
THIS TRILOGY IS PURE PERFECTION!!!!

Best trilogy ever. Man if only I was born earlier, I could have watched this on the big screen
22 years and yet the best trilogy ever.
just watched rings of power teaser and this LOTR trailer is so much better, Peter Jackson was the goat
I would happily prefer this to be rereleased in theatres again than watching The Rings Of Power TV show
The music at 1:48 never fails to get me hyped up for a 20 year-old trilogy that hasn’t aged a day.
You wouldn't know what it is, would you? I've tried searching it, but it the only answer I get is Gothic Power, which seems to have been used in a more common version.
2020 anyone? I guess I’m the only one coming back to see memories from when I watched LOTR for the first time when I was 6.

Man these films were truly beautiful in every way 💜
aww man December? there's no way I can wait that long..

Best trilogy. Best movies. Beat cast. Just pure joy every time. Middle Earth wya
I have family who always tries to tell me that Harry potter is better than lotr but I always tell them that everything in Lotr is infinitely more better. Acting, Cast, soundtrack, story, etc. I agree 100% that this is the best trilogy of all time, and I will die on that hill.

Peter Jackson actually wanted to adapt The Hobbit first, but he couldn't get permission to do so at the time, so he started with The Lord of the Rings instead. They would've turned out so different if that had been the case.

Like the balls to say that. Even nowadays where sequels are so prevalent you don't see trailers state how many there are going to be and like you should be excited for it.

This trailer doesn't do the movie any justice. Terrible trailer.
