  • After more than 40 years operating Intercity services from London Paddington to Bristol, Swansea, Plymouth, Penzance, Paignton, and many other places, the famous Intercity 125 trains are being retired from service. Enjoy this rare treat of a full power start from Taunton station - to celebrate the end of the 125 InterCity era. if you have never experienced a full power MTU station departure - this is for you. The engines may not scream like the original Paxman Valenta engines originally installed, but they still roar like no other engine, enabling a very fast station departure only marginally slower than the newer Class 800 trains that are replacing them on front line Inter City services. Enjoy.

    Great video.☺️
Edit: I prefer it when the HST’s had the VP185 Engines because of the screaming sound it made when it was pulling out of a Train Station.

I prefer when they had slam doors

Don't you mean the Valenta ? The VP185s sound like a bag of nails imo although they sound much better in the XPT due to a different exhaust system allowing some exhaust note as in `XPT at Wauchope'.

I wouldn't say it was rare seeing a HST at Taunton.

Luckily I live in the west county so will still get to see and travel on the hst 'castle' sets but it will be a sad day on Saturday with the final running of a full hst set.

I travelled on one of the Castle sets yesterday..fantastic acceleration. Shame they are limited to 100mph!

@@N330AA in my day there was something in the rule book about short-formed loco-hauled trains including HSTs. Perhaps there's no hard and fast instruction nowadays.

OMG. I was hauled by that exact same power car 43071 almost exactly 1 year ago from Par Cornwall to London Paddington! Scary!

I love your videos. Fascinated by various train acceleration and braking performance data so this is right up my street.
Is there any chance you could do some of the GWR Castle set HST gps recordings down the Exeter to Bristol ( or Cardiff ) where the line speeds are 100mph plus? Would love to see what their performance is like. Thanks

That was idling as it left, possibly notch 3, that wasn’t full power.

But I prefer driving the IETs over the 2+4 HST sets we now have. Any electric train, or train in electric mode, will beat an HST on acceleration. In diesel mode, IETs are still faster at pulling away, but not by as much.
