I've been having a bit of a rough patch the last few days and for some reason your "some of the experts already here" made me laugh out loud. I really appreciate what you do. Don't ever stop making videos.
Looking good without the silly 'tundra tyre' undercarriage (that was never going to work, with the high thrustline). I'd ditch the tailwheel as well, which would clean it up even more and help with the CG too.
Looks like a joy to fly! I wish I had a floaty plane like this and a large enough space to fly it. I live in one of the most crowded cities in the world and I am stuck to smaller, more agile airplanes.
You've done it again, another top model and top flight. A bit of a letdown that there was no catching involved....lol. If I was a betting man I would say.....sloping next? I've got 2 maidens to do and the weather here in Scotland is foul at the moment.
That is impressive on the ground and simply majestic in the air. Yep much better without the wheels but nice to have the option for those with proper flying fields. I presume that you will be sloping it at some point in the near future.. love it
Such a baller ending to pinpoint land with the flaps, then pick it up and address the tail cam. I've been researching what my ~2m "battery bus" is going to be, and I think this is the winner. Super efficient, while also capable of carrying massive battery weight, and also readily available with lots of 3d printable FC/inav mounts. I have a couple of bucket-list flights that I want to be able to complete (circumnavigating a few islands), and I think this is the wing that's going to get me there.
Thank you for another great review! Although, l think a 1600 would suit my situation better, I really enjoy seeing these larger ones soar. Great time to be getting back into RC planes.
Bought at spring Ranger-2000, after watching your videos. It flies great. But this one is a bit more interesting, if I bought it now, I would choose this one! Thanks for good review!
Another great video Andrew. Hmmm. 5.5 amps at about half throttle cruising speed. Looks like this is a definite aerial mapping platform. I suspect you might get a little more practicality if you dumped the large wheels. Most are probably used to hand launches anyways. Like the way the big landing gear comes off with just two screws. Ironic isn’t it that it takes off as good, if not better, than with the large wheels on. I would go as far as to say that this is an ultimate, affordable mapping platform. Volantex hit another home run with this one. Greetings from Florida USA.
I understand why they included the big wheels, so a gimbal wouldn't hit the ground. But they are too far back and maybe not lifting the nose high enough. Without the landing gear to comes alive
The landing gear looks like it needs to be about 50mm further forward, bigger wheels would help also , I'm pretty sure some of the other ranger models had an option for larger wheels.
Stoked to see this video, and posted the same day my V-R2.4k arrived in the post. No regrets and this one is going straight to the workbench for assembly. Looking forward to the now obligatory slope video. lol
well i am finally getting a Ranger 2400, having given up all attempts at flying FPV, its just not for me i wanted a large los plane, this 2400 has become hard to get, but a chat with Arxangel has lead me to buying his near new one
The Radian XL 2.6 and Ranger 2400, after having flown them both, if you were entering a glider flight contest for duration etc, which model would you chose? I know gliders have their own characteristics, but if you had to make a choice on the spur of the moment which one would be your first choice? Happy Flying
Hello Andrew! First of all - thank you for all your video series, the format is just excellent - subscribed! :) I would like to get an advice: I have some FPV accessories (a base for long-range) I bought in the past which I would like to utilize, but I am not very skilled with the actual flying, I only have some experience with EasyStar simple FPV setup and a custom flying wing. My target is to explore the surrounding scenery with an ability to make some long distance trips like flying onto a "mountain on the horizon" and back, maybe do some height "personal records". I would like to carry usual FPV stuff like APM / GPS / HD camera, possibly some gimbal in the future ... So far (also thanks to your reviews), I ended up with 2 options - the Mini Talon and Volantex Ranger 2000... and I just can't decide what is more suitable for me as both options have their advantages I find very useful. Speaking of Mini Talon, I love it's portability (no need to detach wings for the transportation) and the room for all the equipment, better wind penetration, more for long-range (I think?)... but Ranger on the other side allows to fly slower (from what I have seen), it is more forgiving to handle due the glider characteristics, it can do thermalling, should be easier to hand-launch, the durable fuselage ... Sorry, I know it is maybe more about making clear what is important for me, but I just can't decide, so maybe you could add some important points which could help me with the decision? :) Thank you!
Hello Jan, it's a 50/50 choice. I prefer the Ranger for pure flying and the tough fuselage, but it's hard to fit the gear in. I think the mini Talon might suit your needs better for covering distance and carrying FPV gear.
The landing gear would work with a front center wheel. I bet it would easily take off from that grass. I use the smaller Aeroscout S (1.1m) and that arrangement works much better on the grass. This is a beauty though. Monster wingspan, and it's so efficient.
Andrew, Nice plane How do these Volantex Ranger glide? For floating and gliding I assume being much heavier it doesn't glide as well as the Sky Surfer X8? Please Advise and Thanks in Advance
This 2400 would be a better glider I suspect. Weight is not as important as drag in a glider, and this would have less relative drag compared to the X8
Hi Andrew, Nicely flown. Was wondering when you were going to take of the landing gear. I think they are too close to the CG to be any use on grass. You should put the fairing back on that is between the landing gear to clean up the bottom of the fuselage.
Both are easy to fly and efficient. 2400 has more capacity but harder to transport, big wheels are not much use but the little wheel works for takeoff. I'll probably fly the 2000 more just because it's easier to fit in the car.
I really like this one,and a great possibility for what I want come Spring time for long range FPV..Plus the bonus set of wheels to use on a Bush plane is very considerate of them..;)
Fantastic flight Andrew! I am strongly considering buying one. What exactly is the "power combo" for this plane? Also what receiver do you have in it? Cheers from Los Angeles!

Hi Alan. The Ranger 1600 is my favourite all-rounder but something like a Bixler 2 or Skysurfer X8 would be a bit easier to begin with. They are lighter and can fly slower. Just learn to fly first then think about FPV and flight controllers once you stop crashing.

According to my wikipedia and rcgroups research... ahem... I mean... as a professional plane designer, I think the wheels should typically be at or slightly ahead of the leading edge. Reason being that they need to be a bit ahead of the CG to make sure the plane will sit on the ground properly at rest and not nose over on tiny bumps, yet not so far ahead of the CG that rotation is difficult. Looks to me like these wheels are simply too far back, they could easily be an inch or more further forward, with that diameter and nice soft rubbery material the grass you were on doesn't look like it should be a problem.

"put tundra wheels on it - cant roll on mild grass". from looks seems that the wheels problem is that they are too close to the CG ..so the plane pivots much easier.. they should be more to the front..
This model is puzzeling me.. Current draw with just 6pc- 9g servos and the ESC live draws whopping 0,6A without even touching the servos via the sticks.. I will find out why!
@@AndrewNewton I found out it was mainly the current needed to brake the motor. Cutting the ESC dropped the current to almost zero. So there we have it🙂
@@AndrewNewton Pitty is they have a std propeller.. Anyone above in mind would have a folding. But they are not where they should be in these things. Hopefully someday..
Anyway, on mine I have a folding propeller, covered the gap from fuselage to motor. Taped all hinging gaps with laminating foil, added knife sharp spruce trailing egdges all over. Included rudder wich was insane 5mm thick. As I see it, they gave us a toy to be juiced up quite abit, if you know what to do..
Yes, the multistar 10,000 mAh 4s battery does phyically fit in the fuselage. I still have to finish assembly and check CG after all additional FPV gear is installed to determine actual placement of it; however, it looks very promising. At the same time the results Andrew is achieving with 6000 mAh is great. I may just stick with the 5000 mAh batteries I have on hand and keep it light.
Andrew, a brief question: A really roomy platform, but when it comes to extreme endurance; do you think that 10+ hrs with 50.000 mAh Li Ion is possible ?
@@AndrewNewton I am quite aware of this "run-away effect: More power needed - larger battery - larger mass - more power needed ... That's right, bigger wheels wouldn't help, need to go forward
move the landing gear forward an inch, then it wont nose over
This model is puzzeling me..
Current draw with just 6pc- 9g servos and the ESC live draws whopping 0,6A without even touching the servos via the sticks..
I will find out why!
Seems like normal current to me.
@@AndrewNewton I found out it was mainly the current needed to brake the motor.
Cutting the ESC dropped the current to almost zero. So there we have it🙂
Aha! Makes sense thanks
@@AndrewNewton
Pitty is they have a std propeller..
I tried Ibus when I flew FlSky for a little, prefer SBUS ;)
Hehe
Does this break down for transport?
Yes, wings are just held in with a clip
@@AndrewNewton Thanks!
How do you like it now, after a month of owning it?
I have only had about 4 flights but it has impressed me every time. Highly recommended Steve.
@@AndrewNewton Oh trust me, I am ready to buy, but I have no place to fly this.
Yes that's the problem.
Beautiful plane, thanks for posting the video, do you mind if i share it on the facebook Volantex group?
Don't mind at all Julian
Thanks Andrew
Does the 2400 have the same fuselage as the 2000 ?
No, 2400 is bigger all over
Bin Chicken!
Do you think a 10000 man 4s would fit ?
Yes, check out the RCGroups thread
Yes, the multistar 10,000 mAh 4s battery does phyically fit in the fuselage. I still have to finish assembly and check CG after all additional FPV gear is installed to determine actual placement of it; however, it looks very promising. At the same time the results Andrew is achieving with 6000 mAh is great. I may just stick with the 5000 mAh batteries I have on hand and keep it light.
"These are iBUS-es, very common around here"
Hahaha, 10 points to NS Gaming
Looks like someone put truck wheels on a glider. John
Yes, what were they thinking?
LoL:-) Recommended Environment: Outdoor
Or the biggest aircraft hangar
The wheels just don't do anything for me. Other than that it looks super!
Comes with free bush plane wheels (for another project)

Andrew, a brief question:
A really roomy platform, but when it comes to extreme endurance; do you think that 10+ hrs with 50.000 mAh Li Ion is possible ?
That would require average current draw of 4A, which probably is not possible with all the extra weight
@@AndrewNewton I am quite aware of this "run-away effect: More power needed - larger battery - larger mass - more power needed ...
There is a quite intersting clip on RUclips about this topicand that Ranger 2400 is consuming just 4,8 Amps for level flight.
Totally agrred that it will be more in case of a larger battery. Here this link: (179) Breaking My Long Range FPV Distance Record - RUclips
