Using the analogy of a narcissistic person makes youtube's red flags stand out even more. Absolutely nailed it. Still in awe of the soothing beauty of your studio, btw. and I love how it ties in with something you said in your video: that being heard by your people doesn't require to be loud or very in your face. Really cool video! Happy 2024 :)

There's also another problem where the creators are not authentic anymore because of going for the algorithm and thus loose people like me that doesn't like that. I do understand it's a business for lots of creators here, but lots of them are deceptive and unauthentic about it and become unpleasant to watch because of it, at least for me.

  • @suzume_artz
    @suzume_artz 5 месяцев назад +28

It’s that same goddamn algorithm again. I already saw artists change their entire identity over it in Instagram, making 15-second long reels with trending audio instead of ever posting their works because those posts never get any engagement. It’s sad that the same algorithm is making its mark on RUclips as well, where I’ve seen so many authentic creators. That’s exactly why I love your videos, Adam. Long Timelapse videos with your art talks really makes me feel like THAT’S HUMAN. I wish to see more of your content for a long time to come, since I listen to each and every one of them while I’m drawing. Thank you for this message ❤

You can't blame the algorithm when all it does is try to maximize engagement. At the end of the day, viewers are driving the content to be the way it is.

Extremely real stuff, realized it myself after pivoting from making the videos that other people were already making to making the vids that only I could make. Ironically the algorithm does reward people who pursue their own ideals. 'The algorithm' is essentially just people like you and me anyway, and most of us are searching for a creator/community that feels right to us, rather than someone doing an impression of what has already succeeded.

    • @koju-kin
      @koju-kin 4 месяца назад

no it doesn't, you just happen to have a facet that the algorithm liked, its not going to reward you likes it a person. its just data.

youtube has become a scrolling thing like facebook or instagram. instead of watching a whole video on a topic, nowadays we just scroll scroll scroll. nothing satisfies the viewer. i try to keep my concentration throughout but even i keep scrolling after a while. it happens in cell phone more than in PC. video takes time to make. creative work and algorithm just does not match. creative works take time and youtube is not a good place for showcasing creative work anymore. it has become an adrenalin rush.

This resonates on a few different levels for me. I spent some four years or so doing Let's Plays here on YT, trying to stick to a schedule and while I enjoyed the format, I felt like I couldn't do what I wanted due to having to stick to schedule to have my stuff seen (which I barely did anyway) and when I did take the time to make something that I wanted to make it did tank. I've since tried to figure out how to make the things I want to make on my own terms while still being able to reach people and so far I haven't figured it out. I'm a slow person, and to boot I do multiple things which means that I don't fit into how any of the current platforms work and anything I do gets drowned out in the stream of content pretty much immediately.
This video is inspiring to me though. I've been thinking about going back to the good old personal website concept for a long time and this might just have been the push I needed to say fuck it and go do it. Just consolidate my work, in all its forms, and own it for myself instead of trying to uncomfortably niche myself on one platform where I can't keep up either way.
Sorry, that's a wall of text XD
What I'm saying is, this resonates, is very inspiring and you may just have given me the kick in the butt that I needed to just go do shit. Thank you.

This seems to be a popular topic this week, with various channels offering up their take. I am rather cynical about the whole things, as *RUclips is by design an advertising agency* , which makes content creators the producers of advertisements, or fill for other advertisers to place their own ads within.
I subscribe to a great many RUclips channels, but most of them are academic and special topic. They are not what some people will label as "content creators", but IMO it's those channels which are valuable to society. They get not many views compared to, say, Marques Brownlee, which means they don't generate money.
But we need to decide whether we want a society that values knowledge (or art) over status (money), or do we value status over knowledge (of just enjoying life.)

I'm not youtuber, but I hate clickbait titles, for example, but understand, this is the way to please the algorithm. I wish, every content was sincere and unique. And I'm happy every time I found something sincere and deep, like Adam's channel.

Thank you for validating how I've felt about big commercial platforms.
In the early days my career type (digital art/commissions) was niche and things were fun all around but now that it's a mainstream thing and all the big platforms exists, people around me (especially peers) are constantly pushing the idea that you need to be on this and that and do a specific thing and I have 0 interest to do so. I tried twitter and it made me miserable. I can't say I'm doing amazingly well but I still exist and still love to do what I do.

Came across your channel in May 2024, hence my comment is a while after this video was posted.
The statements you made here resonated with me. They are true of being an employee in a corporation, or the part owner of a business. In those circumstances ones involvement is as a resource, a supply hose to the organisation. One likes to think one's contribution is valuable and valued. Its not. Your disposable and replaceable.
It's essential to be self sufficient and self reliant and independent.
I only figured this out in the last 15 years of my working life before I retired. I became a freelance consultant for many companies. That worked.... I was then valued, was helping, and enjoyed what I was doing.
One of the best videos I have seen this year. Thank you.

I've rebranded myself as an online artist several times over the years. Often, my best work comes when I shout into the void as if no one were watching. The moment I'm tempted to fall in line with what "works" for the computer is when I burn out and lose my voice. I've always wanted to make a RUclips channel, but still figuring out what I want to say. I have talents and knowledge to share. But I always heard the advice that you need to be ONE kind of channel. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm looking for the thread that'll stitch together what I want to share in a way that only I can do.
Adam, I appreciate your videos. You're making me feel like this offline soul-searching is helping me find the right path.

This video is very precious to me. I recently started a youtube channel because i thought I'd like to be a youtuber and because with the state of the art industry it's even more hard to be seen or even get a job as an artist. The more i posted videos the less enthousiast a began to be about it because i barely get any views, I started to get pretty anxious and depressed about it. I even started to inform myselself on what type of thumnails to make, or if I should avoid to do certain stuff. The thing is these "rules" are always changing at an overwhelming rate, it's would be a matter of time before I can't keep up anymore. This video made me realize that I should keep going, not for the sake of money or youtube but for myself, I love drawing, creating stories that make me hope and dream and I can't let that go. RUclips is just a medium that can help and should not become my main priority. Like you said I need to find my own way to achieve my goals and not depend on anything else but me. Thank you so much.

UGGH....I can't tell you how much I appreciate this!!! This something I've been thinking about a lot already (the whole staying true to yourself thing.) I'm a tiny creator, but I did have one video blow up back in May, and since then, I've been finding myself inadvertently making decisions based more on pleasing the algorithm over what I feel is authentically me. It's not something I'm doing intentionally, and I'm not even certain that it's outwardly reflected in my work (yet), but I've realized I've just been a lot more inhibited in how I want to express myself. I am going to try and be more intentional about not doing this, and doing what I actually want to do. As you say, the right people will find you. Thank you so much, Adam!!

I know I’ll probably catch shit for this, but I sometimes wonder if things like the rapid influx of AI, the increasing feeling of an over saturated art market, the competition for creative jobs…if all of this is really forcing artists/creators to question their reason for doing what they do. Like, if someone stood to gain nothing, if no one was watching/listening/paying attention, would we still do this? Would we still be compelled to create? It sometimes feels as though we conditioned to feel like the only way we can make space for this in our lives and have it mean anything is to do it for monetary gain. ‘Find your passion!’ ‘Quit your job and become an artist!’ These refrains have created a sort of anxiety in us that keeps us chasing the carrot until we lose sight of the fact that (and I’m speaking for myself) all we really wanna do is engage in the PURE JOY of making. To be that kid again, sitting on the floor, coloring, drawing with no other care in the world.

I just wanted to say that you really helped me get through a period in my life when I was really questioning a lot of things, probably due to how similar you are introspectively. I am now the founder of an app to help people with ADHD practice self-care (holistic self improvement) by gamifying it. And I realized today that I am getting off course again as I am buried in comms work and my soul told me to find you again. I knew I'd have to make a sacrifice in order to really pursue my dream (taking a lot of roles maybe ones I didn't even want) but I'm in a place now where I can start beginning to delegate better soon. Anyways man just love your content and really appreciate YOU. It's hard to keep being authentic as the thing I'm doing grows and my time feels more and more strained. Even though the thing I am working on is EXACTLY what I want to be creating. I just need more hands

I really appreciate your energy and this video. I am very sensitive to that frenetic energy you described a lot of RUclipsrs do. I can barely stand it even if I love their content. There are some I really love to watch, but I always find myself telling them to take a breath five minutes in, because they're just ramrodding the information down so fast and hard that I can't even listen to them. And now I am seeing that as their fear as you described. It is sad and no way to live.
I've spent too many years working for people that demand like this, and am currently trying to branch off into my own business. It is a bit intimidating as a newcomer and a misfit. I'm not sure if I will be able to be seen since you have roots and years of building followers. I wonder if it will be possible to be seen as a newcomer if the algorithm demands blood and you don't want to give it and also don't have a reputation yet. I've heard others say it is still easy to do with enough dedication, but I wonder if they're giving blood to get it. You know? Do you still think it is possible even starting from zero on all fronts?

Thank you for covering this topic. I started RUclips back in college as a way for me to just simply share what I create, and I didn’t start it out as a way for me to get famous. Heck, I initially saw RUclips as a place for me to share my creations. Beating the algorithm wasn’t on my mind back then. I just simply used it to share my creations.
Nowadays, I am currently making Timelapse art videos because I thought it’s pretty cool to document your creative process like that so I started making them out of interest. Vivziepop was pretty much an inspiration for me to create Timelapse art videos like that.
Of course I don’t get a lot of views of course which is perfectly fine with me. As an aspiring cartoonist and animator, I want to document my artistic and creative journey solely through Timelapse art videos. And I have to admit somewhere down the line I questioned myself whether I was being authentic or not.
I don’t get a lot of views which is perfectly fine with me. At least I have a small audience that I care about. Besides I have a ton of creative ideas that I have in my head and I want to express them through Timelapse art videos and share them in RUclips to the audience that I care about. I just find Timelapse art videos as a fun way to document my creative journey and see my progress sped up. I mean, I was inspired by the idea of recording your progress and then speed it up.
So yeah, I mean RUclips is changing right now, but for now I’m just going to do my own thing and treat my RUclips channel as a way to document my creative journey and to share my creations to the audience that I care about. I don’t give a damn about the algorithm and the likes and that crap anymore. I’m going to do my own thing by making a lot of Timelapse art videos and just simply share my creations to the people I care about.

it actually Killed me. before I even started.
as for now I have one art process video on my channel and just that - without even voice-over - takes a whole lot more then just making art.
so I constantly think of - which format my vids will be, what can I "produce weekly" and which clicky title I might use and oh right - which "winner" thumbnail to make.
I was burned out even before starting, the editing seemed meaningless, without direction, a hustle.
I wish and want to share my art, my process and tips, of life as an artist (yes, thank you for it :) ) and help in which way I can,
but youtube - the place I thought is better than other socials, can be a struggle.
I still dont give up, and try to see how making videos AND art can work together
and this video you made helped me focus more, so
Thank You, very much, and wish you a great 2024 :)

Only just discovered your channel, but this struggling artist would like to thank you. This vid, as well as a few others from your channel, like... dude... EXACTLY what I needed to hear. As a trad artist who grew up through the 80s/90s, trying desperately to fit into a contemporary designer's box, I was on the verge of collapse. While I like technicality, structure and creative problem solving, I was becoming a slave to "output". Between that and social media, my motivation and passion for creation had evaporated. Completely lost touch with my creative voice. For the bazillionth time in 43 years, I was ready to give up art. Again.
Would've been like severing a limb tbh, but I had lost all hope of getting clear and moving forward in some direction. Watching a few of your art talks really helped put things into perspective, and while it's still nascent at best, that excitement for creation is starting to tickle my brain again. Now I find myself thinking up new ideas. Approaching a concept no longer feels like a thankless chore. Feels like setting out on an adventure with an old friend. Have no idea where the roads leads, but it's invigorating instead of terrifying. Haven't felt this good in months, possibly years.
While I may have come across advice from elsewhere that resonated (eventually), or figured it out for myself on a long enough timeline (maaaaaybe), what I got instead was your art talks. Thoughtful insights that were, hands down, the best unexpected thing I never knew I needed. Think I just needed to hear that it was okay to trust my gut, and my artistic voice, from someone who's been there. Even if it took like 4 of your vids to knock the rust out of my goddamned skull.
    ... but I digress.
You provided just the right kick in the pants to encourage me to stand up again, and quite possibly saved my art from a mighty Nemesis; myself.
For that I am truly grateful, so thank you Adam. Very much.

Can relate to the message of this video, not on youtube though but on instagram. I used to do fanart for super popular titles, and found decent success in getting engagement. But the second I switched from doing fanart to what I really want to be doing, which is related to my own IP, the engagement got slashed by over 10x lol. It's disheartening, but honestly doing your own thing with your own voice is incredibly revitalizing. It feels like, i dont know, the whole point of being a goddamn artist.

I like your artistic style, your creativeness. I also come here to listen to what you have to say and I always leave feeling good about what I have listened to. Thank you so much Adam.

Thanks for being so encouraging. for all the creators out there. I am just happy to have found you on here. You inspire me and many others in the creative community.
You're right about youtube though. it really doesn't care cause the computer wasn't built to care about creators. Computers usually don't have any emotions in general. they just run numbers and creators are one of those numbers in it's long database of users. Sure you can make things, but it doesn't care the outcome of your creations. In the end you have to lookout for yourself and your well being. Users on the platform are the communities you bring in. It all depends on how the users react to having a following or not, not for numbers, but for interactions. I hope more people stay enjoying creating things in this bleak world. It makes it more interesting and reguardless if you are on youtube or on any social media site, I hope people just keep trying to create what their purpose in life is to make.

I learned that lesson almost two years ago. I was grinding away at videos and streams and just trying to build an audience. It was working but it was staccato at best. So I pulled away from it and have been "tinkering" in the background now outside of the art career, just creating what I want, when I want. Would I like a "passive income stream" from youtube, sure. But it isn't passive and it takes a ton of work. So, now, I put out something when I have something to share.
I always appreciate your perspective Adam. You're great at opening up and analyzing to bringing to voice all the things we may be feeling living in the same creator space. Thanks for sharing.

This really means a lot to us, artists, creators and people who want to give value to their audience. Been working towards starting RUclips and preparing for it, reading, researching that involves all these strategies, ways of editing and things you should do so you will definitely have this ,,exponential growth” when starting the channel. But today I came back to your channel because I missed your genuine art talks and this is what you are talking about , I came back for the authenticity of your content and this made me think definitely from a different perspective and I will take it as a note when I do start my own channel. Thank you! :)

Thank you for all your videos. It was really helpful for me, since I found your channel. I think, it's really important in our fast, too much success-oriented world, where everyone is obsessed with likes and views, to stop for a wile and look into yourself, to connect with your soul, feelings and with your creative source. And connecting with your thoughts and feelings helps a lot with it. It's not just "helps", for me it's about human being.

Adam, I just stumbled on to your videos today, and I have been binge watching for hours now. Thank you so much for making such valuable content. I’ve been considering making a RUclips channel about being a creative with bipolar disorder for a while now. I actually posted a video (on the channel that I made for it) a while back but then deleted it because it was depressing to see the abject lack of engagement over 3 months. I have a pretty realistic concept (i would say) and have watched plenty of videos about that being inevitable, and determination, and algorithm, and blahblahblah. I can’t help but watch this video and think about “depletion” in a situation where you use time and energy to create content and you choose not to aim to follow the algorithm. And you make content for an empty room- maybe even for years. Any words of encouragement specifically speaking to that?
Thanks so much again, this is some of the most valuable content I’ve found on YT

  • @KuroiPK
    @KuroiPK 5 месяцев назад +2

Your point about not following the algorithm is really valid! I love your content I feel like the way you do your content is so much better and more impressive then let’s say Mr Beast (just naming him because he’s the current face to a certain degree of RUclips), ever thought your product much more manageable yet so many RUclipsrs think they have to chase some trend to reach success. But that’s really not needed since I know now multiple around 100k channels and they don’t follow the algorithm to a T and still make a living out of it.

But I love seeing pictures of peoples artwork, mostly rough sketches and ideas in the early stages...I post rough ideas all the time with rarely any engagement at all. Anyway thank you for reminding me whats important.

    Incredibly well-written, presented and a spot-on take.
The social media app as narcissist was an insight I never would have thought of but rings so true.
I recently actually became a member of a RUclipsr’s community after promising myself I’d never connect a CC to one of these apps.
    The reason?
He came out as getting to the end of his narcissist support for the faceless corporation and then, instead of quitting, decided “fuck it” and us just going to make what he wants to make as he wants to make it - to hell with the “algorithm”.
I so respected his choice I now contribute monthly to his efforts.
I believe that at some point there will be functionality or an “app” where people of like minds can connect and where you can find people with your values and interests without the mega-corporation mindlessness.
    My 2 cents.

This a good way to explain the issue to those not coming at this topic from a creative aspect; because while some people are just in this for the check it is still a self employed creative field.
I have seen many others balk at the recent departures as ungrateful people giving up the golden ticket. The sort of flexible job everyone in the corporate meatgrinder could only dream of having, possibly making more money than they can dream of, too.
However, it isn't so simple. Those that already feel chewed up will never understand how someone that can set their own hours will burn themselves out, and vice versa someone throwing their everything into their work will envy being able to check out at the end of the work day.
I dare say it is just proof that the meatgrinder is everywhere, be it automatic or hand crank.

The force of AI channels , the narcisst Maschine that replaces you. RUclips takes them to make money out your work reuploade. They actively accepting this practice , many have given up because of this they helpless agaignst a automated system of content theft

While im not a youtuber, from this video i realized i have a somewhat narcissistic boss as well called; Patreon. I love those who subscribe to my patreon, but ive started to feel burnt out from it, that im seen as an art machine that has to post every few days some form of art, cause gotta make sure that jimmy in america is getting his $9 a month worth of art from me, and it's just, so, so draining, so tiring, but my cats, my family and I rely on it cause i got fired unfairly last year and finding a job has been insanely difficult.
I honestly dont know anymore what to do, or what is my authetic self, trying to figure that out still, but at the very least im glad your video made me realize "oh yeah, my narcissistic boss is patreon". One step at a time i guess!

@AdamDuffArt as a creator you are, indeed, a man of wisdom. Actually, this content is an approach of modern philosophy for concepts like freedom and nihilism, when it has been exploited by something that is beyond human form (tech, algorithms, etc). I'm still watching your content not only due to art, but for what you can tell to everyone, your sense of awareness is outstanding.
If you are into reading, I recommend Psychopolitics by Byung-Chul Han. What you described in a video format is likely to be here as philosophy.
