Not sure what OP's dad's problem is. Obviously, she was not the golden child, and it's pretty crappy when you get the back of a parent's hand. My mother had the same reaction when I had to cancel a trip home because my husband needed some expensive dental work. Her comment was basically why shouldn't you be broke like the rest of us. Because I have a better idea, that's why.

Hopefully none will die before they get around to visiting again. It does happen. I get they need to save to buy a house... and it's fine to make that choice. The dad still gave dome money. However part of me just knows time is fleeting. It's a balance in life.
