Thanks Gareth. Reading this as an adult had more of an impact on me than when I read it as a teenager. An incredibly depressing, yet phenomenally powerful story.
I read this as an adult. Phenomenal book… I think there are few books as important as this one. Some of what’s going on today makes me think of it, actually. Great, great review.
Love your review. I also read it long ago in school. I don't remember much except it was depressing. Recently, I read the graphic novel version. I can't say I really enjoyed it. It was grim. It was interesting. The art was well done. Based upon your review, I now know that the graphic novel version was accurate to the original novel. After reading the graphic novel, I am not planning on reading the original novel again.
1984 was definitely grim. I need to really read up on George Orwell - this novel and Animal Farm were depressingly amazing - I need to understand his mindset.
That was a compelling review. I’ve read it, not as a student but long enough not to remember it well. I’ve also read _We_ so I suppose the only major dystopian classic I have yet to tackle would be _Brave New World._
Great analysis. It was also great having you as part of our 1984 Voxer Group. I hope MJ does a Live Group Chat at month's end, and that youre a oart of that, too 😮🎉😅 Thanks, Fred.
I'm reading it for probably the 3 rd time and I understand more every time. Your constantly watched with at least your cell phone and pay to be monitored.
The third time?! Wow, I think twice is enough for me. I really appreciated it more now as an adult. Having a better understanding of the world today really makes this novel an important read.
There really are some stories that stick with you and don’t need re-reading. As far as belief goes, I think Orwell had the same insight as Hannah Arendt - in a total propaganda environment, people come not to believe in anything. They say and do what they need to and otherwise just disengage.
This book should be a warning sign of when things start to go bad, but unfortunately seems to be used as a guide book in some countries. Such as shame.
Great review, thanks for sharing your rereading experience.
Thanks! The novel was so much better for me reading it as an adult.
I think you're right; it's important to read it as an adult. Great review. It's an incredibly important book. Great video Fred.

Very happy I decided to re-read this as an adult. I definitely appreciate it more.
Great review, Fred. I read this in 1984, but it's long overdue for a reread.
It's a buzz kill, but wow, what a powerful message.
@@ReadbyFred it's a buzz kill that guys really close to home these days
Awesome review. I’ll have to read this soon. It does sound like a good book.
It will make you feel depressed and demoralized (at least it did with me), but the novel is so well written.
It is an important one. As the T shirt says to the effect of - 1984 wasn't supposed to be a manual!

I've have rarely read a book which has impacted me so profoundly after I finished it. 1984 was such a book.
Great review! The free world needs a reminder now than ever. Good old Orwell is doing just that.
Thanks! I really appreciated this novel - a must read indeed :)

Thanks Allen! I'm glad I was able to take part and reread this novel 😀
@@ReadbyFred Cool. MJ's organizing a Live Show next Saturday (I think) and I hope you can take part in that, too. 😎🤔🤓
I read 1984 when I was a teenager as well. It opened my eyes to the world and the Orwellian forces at work in the world as well.
It is definitely a powerful novel, and one that I appreciate more now as an adult than I did as a teenager in high school. Very happy I (re)read it :)
Cracking stuff. The crazy thing is that Orwell also wrote Animal Farm. How does one guy strike gold twice?
Both were excellent works. I've got to pick up his memoirs! :)

George's brother was a raving communist. Can imagine what their Thanksgivings would be like.
lol the end of this is ironic in 8.3.2024
