Can we all appreciate the fact that these two as well as a myriad of producers, cameramen and crew hands all quit when they heard Clarkson got fired? They had no idea if they'd ever find work again but they were willing to walk off simply because their friend got fired. That's some serious loyalty

But they compounded the mistake by thinking that the Hamster and Capt. Slow would sign new contracts with Clarkson gone. Because they both understood something that the BBC seemed to have forgotten: A show can have some weak spots in the format or structure, and still work of the chemistry of the hosts is good. If the chemistry isn't good it doesn't matter what you do with the format-the show will suck bilge water. They really thought that they could just stick someone else in there and the show would be fine. When May and Hammond chose not to resign, the BBC didn't have a contingency plan in place because they didn't consider the possibility that they'd have to replace the whole crew in one shot. And that lack of planning showed.

Still, considering the fact that the BBC moved Heaven and Earth to protect a pedophile, although we understand they fired him for a perfectly valid reason, many fans were pissed that they went to fight more for a pedophile then they did for an actually decent person. We feel Jeremy didn't get what he deserved and BBC had failed to protect one of their most important talents. Could have had him donate money to a charity, donate money to the producer, give various talks about why you shouldn't punch people in the face over a steak, suspend him. Nope. They fired him. So as it turns out, to get the BBC to back you, you absolutely must never punch a person in the face, you have to rape children.
This is easily the most badass ending to a TV show ever. This Is basically James and Richard saying good bye to the viewers and then just straight up walking out of the show with the entire camera crew and production team just because their friend got fired. Absolutely legendary.
ok can we stop with the misinformation. Clarkson WAS NOT FIRED. The BBC chose not to renew his contract when it expired. Theres a BIG difference. Happened to me back in 2012. Was a cleaner on a rolling contract, every year the company would sign it off for another 12 months. Then after 6 years of service, they decided to let everyone who was English go because, and i quote "we can pay 2 polish for one english wage." Back then, this was totally ok until the equality act. Same thing with Clarkson. They had an excuse to let him go, offer that nob Chris Evan's a fraction of Clarksons wage and save mega bucks. Of course, after the reboot, noone watched it because he was trying to mimic Clarkson's talking habbits.
I mean, Clarkson was the show. He was on Top Gear before this generation of Top Gear. Everything about the show changed, except him. Luckily, Hammond and May came along and matched his precesnce and became legends.
The credits are probably copied and pasted with alterations if necessary. Clarkson was in the episode so it would be kinda petty to manually put his name lower down.

BBC is non-profit and funded by the TV license pretty much every household has to pay anyway, so they probably didn’t lose any money cancelling the show

I actually told dad this a few months ago. He asked if I still watched Top Gear, and said "it's about cars. You like cars". I said "I like cars, but I can get car information from other sources. I watched Top Gear because of how Hammond, Clarkson and May made it. The new Top Gear tried to replicate it which is why I didn't like it, because it wasn't the same".
They often aren't discussing cars much anyway, plenty of people who hate cars still watched this for the brilliant comedy that it was. All those 'Stig's cousins' over the years - the Chinese one who kung fu'd them all over the track and the African one who was brilliant at racing the car around some grassland.
I'm glad they fired him. They went on to amazon & was able to have more adventures. Top gear isn't the same without them but theyre still together doing what they do best.

Agreed. Jeremy, James and Richard weren't just the Top Gear team ~ they ARE Top Gear. They are what the programme would look like if you gave it arms and legs and a body to move about in. It would never have been as successful as it had been if it had not been for those three; they're irreplaceable.

Now it's the end of an era as we know it. The studio/tent, the audience, the track. Good news is they're not stopping. Season 4 of The Grand Tour awaits.

Top Gear became well known for its over the top gigantic stunts, laughs and production quality. To end with a simple "thank you for watching" and a "goodbye" in a quiet studio with no music over the end credits is genuine filmmaking. Thats a brilliant way of ending things, knowing how big this ending really was. I think these 20 seconds may have to be regarded as part of television history, considering it was the biggest show in the world for a long time
I don't know if it's just because there is only Richard and James, the silent credit or “goodbye“ insted of “good night“, but after five years even though we got Grand Tour, it still hurts the same way it did when i found out about them ending. I was only 12 years old and those three brits were part of my childhood, every tuesday from 20:00 to 21:00. I loved that show despite i didn't care about cars that much. And when i saw the first episode of Top Gear without them... i felt like the show lost it's soul, and it truly did...
0:17 the fact that they quit their jobs shortly after, they knew exactly what they were doing at that moment when they say goodbye these guys are much smarter than we suspect xD
To just have no crowd, no clarkson there, it just felt depressing. Just them two and the cars they shared memories together. Shame they didn't do a montage of the good times.... It's quite nice how a few years later, when clarkson hammond and may decided to finally end the format they ran from 2002-2015 on Top Gear and 2016-2018 on The Grand Tour that the BBC let them show that montage with clips from top gear alongside clips from the grand tour.. it was probably the perfect ending the show deserved, it was like the BBC admitting, that they still ARE Top Gear ^_^

I'd say it was already dying. The bickering between Clarkson, Hammond and May used to be funny, but they just kept pushing it further and further to the point where it stopped being funny and started being annoying. It was only the change of presenters which kept me watching as long as I did. The series with Chris Evans was pretty poor, but I quite enjoyed the three series with LeBlanc, Harris, and Reid. I'm not sure about Flintoff and McGuinness though.

Top gear used to be good when it was more factual then it ended with this with Clarkson, May and Hammond when it was still funny. Most of the Clarkson, Hammond and May era was better, but their last couple of seasons were over-exaggerated, unprofessional, arguing all the time, and for me it just stopped being funny. Now yes, the season with Chris Evans was terrible, but it has slowly improved since. It still has a way to go, but it beats this dismal ending. That said, I did not watch it this year. How can you call it terrible and boring if (by your own admission) you have not watched it?
Here after watching the last Grand Tour episode. These three have been an important part of my childhood, and their entire body of work with BBC and Amazon is nothing short of bloody brilliant.
@@reece1201 Nope. The Grand Tour comes across as unauthentic. It has it's moments ofc but the whole show, especially the bits in the tent feel so planned out and fake. Top Gear had scripted moments obviously but they were funny, and alot of the show felt very natural and organic.

I think they lost out letting that Rory Guy go, tbh Harris is the straight man with Freddie & Paddy acting the fool, I think Rory Matt & Chris (Harris not evens that was just awful) were the best of new gen top gear, I did like the Extra gear show they did as a iplayer exclusive it would've been good with the original 3 for some extra behind the scenes content.
No sure anyone could live up to Clarkson, Hammond and May. But the new guys need to stop trying so hard to be funny. Also if they could bring the fun challenges with cheaper cars it would make a difference. Idea for a challenge - They each get £1500 to spend on a car, each week they complete a challenge. The two losers get £500 to upgrade the car for the following week. All challenges are varied each week with a big finale on the last week.

This was such a sad ending and you could sense it in James and Richard when they said goodbey. You could sense James wanted to say more as well but just could find the words and just easier to say "googdbye", I bet if all 3 where with the BBC still they'd still be doing this show full on to this day. I grew up watching these with the family so to see them gone even with the Grand Tour ending now to is so so sad and hard too.

The greatest motor show ever made in the history of human kind, there will be no other like it, mainly because you can't find people like Jeremy, James and Hammond that easily!
This always leaves tears in my eyes even though I know there's tons of content with all 3 of them on Grand Tour. This was the end of an era. You could tell it pained both of them to say goodbye but BBC was stern about firing their best friend and they would have followed him even if there wasn't the promise of a huge Amazon budgeted show. RIP Top Gear. This show was something else in its prime. A work of art.

Also the grand tour just doesn't quite have the same magic. Old top gear had the same energy and rapport, not to mention first class camera work, but with some of the excesses reined in a bit. First season of grand tour and Richard Hammond is equating ice cream with homosexuality and it's just a bit tryhard cringe.

Rumour has it that Clarkson Hammond & May are signing a deal with Netflix. Hammond & May did not want to do Top Gear with a guest host every week despite much money being offered. The BBC really got it wrong.🚘
this is so sad :( it's the end of an era, but everything must come to an end. I'm a girl so i can and will admit to crying during the final episode. I can't wait to see what the boys do next, and also to see the train wreck that will come of the new top gear (not that i'll be watching it)

The saddest part about "true" Top Gear ending was the fact we never got see them do threeway faceoff of the Ferrari The Ferrari, McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918. The Grand Tour one with d'Ambrosio was pretty lacklustre I imagine Top Gear would of staged a cool race at somewhere like Silverstone, with the car makers supplying the drivers. Button, Vettel and Webber, employed by the three manufacturers at the time would of been awesome :) But alas it wasn't to be :(

you should watch the grand tour on amazon prime. It's like Top Gear with a higher budget, and it starts off with the threeway faceoff between the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918. Honestly amazon prime is worth it just for the grand tour.
@ConfusedOilPainter You're probably right about the manufacturer's not supporting this. However "big TV" will always have the option to rent the cars from private owners for the day. Top Gear did exactly that with the Enzo when Ferrari refused to lend them one.

This wasn’t a car show featuring James, Richard, and Jeremy, it was James’, Richards’, and Clarkson’s show featuring cars. Seriously when the short Amazon series “our man in Japan” came out, I watched it for no other reason than to hear James May talk about stuff. Anyone else could’ve hosted it, and I would not have watched it. And that’s probably why the Grand Tour is doing so well in comparison to Top Gear, because people watch it for the hosts, not necessarily the cars.

Top Gear became well known for its over the top gigantic stunts, laughs and production quality. To end with a simple "thank you for watching" and a "goodbye" in a quiet studio with no music over the end credits is genuine filmmaking. Thats a brilliant way of ending things, knowing how big this ending really was. I think these 20 seconds may have to be regarded as part of television history, considering it was the biggest show in the world for a long time

I don't know if it's just because there is only Richard and James, the silent credit or “goodbye“ insted of “good night“, but after five years even though we got Grand Tour, it still hurts the same way it did when i found out about them ending. I was only 12 years old and those three brits were part of my childhood, every tuesday from 20:00 to 21:00. I loved that show despite i didn't care about cars that much. And when i saw the first episode of Top Gear without them... i felt like the show lost it's soul, and it truly did...

nine years later, the three friends finally get the send off that they deserved.
To just have no crowd, no clarkson there, it just felt depressing. Just them two and the cars they shared memories together. Shame they didn't do a montage of the good times....
And that silent credits...truly one of the most heart wrenching things I have ever seen. Any way I could use this footage for a video mate?
It's quite nice how a few years later, when clarkson hammond and may decided to finally end the format they ran from 2002-2015 on Top Gear and 2016-2018 on The Grand Tour that the BBC let them show that montage with clips from top gear alongside clips from the grand tour.. it was probably the perfect ending the show deserved, it was like the BBC admitting, that they still ARE Top Gear ^_^

I'd say it was already dying. The bickering between Clarkson, Hammond and May used to be funny, but they just kept pushing it further and further to the point where it stopped being funny and started being annoying. It was only the change of presenters which kept me watching as long as I did. The series with Chris Evans was pretty poor, but I quite enjoyed the three series with LeBlanc, Harris, and Reid. I'm not sure about Flintoff and McGuinness though.

Top gear used to be good when it was more factual then it ended with this with Clarkson, May and Hammond when it was still funny. However top gear since then has been utterly boring ... so much so I have never bothered to tune in fact I positively hate the new top gear.

Most of the Clarkson, Hammond and May era was better, but their last couple of seasons were over-exaggerated, unprofessional, arguing all the time, and for me it just stopped being funny. Now yes, the season with Chris Evans was terrible, but it has slowly improved since. It still has a way to go, but it beats this dismal ending. That said, I did not watch it this year.

Here after watching the last Grand Tour episode. These three have been an important part of my childhood, and their entire body of work with BBC and Amazon is nothing short of bloody brilliant.

@@reece1201 Nope. The Grand Tour comes across as unauthentic. It has it's moments ofc but the whole show, especially the bits in the tent feel so planned out and fake. Top Gear had scripted moments obviously but they were funny, and alot of the show felt very natural and organic.
@@spudmagnum7394 which is why I said season 2 and 3. Season 1, fair enough, absolute car crash of a series, overly scripted, terrible. But season 2 and 3 are the complete opposite and everything about it is exactly the same as it was when they were Top Gear.

As much as Chris Harris is trying to do his job, he just won't be able to bring back the comedy and charm this trio bought to the show.
I think they lost out letting that Rory Guy go, tbh Harris is the straight man with Freddie & Paddy acting the fool, I think Rory Matt & Chris (Harris not evens that was just awful) were the best of new gen top gear, I did like the Extra gear show they did as a iplayer exclusive it would've been good with the original 3 for some extra behind the scenes content.
No sure anyone could live up to Clarkson, Hammond and May. But the new guys need to stop trying so hard to be funny. Also if they could bring the fun challenges with cheaper cars it would make a difference.
Idea for a challenge - They each get £1500 to spend on a car, each week they complete a challenge. The two losers get £500 to upgrade the car for the following week. All challenges are varied each week with a big finale on the last week.

This was such a sad ending and you could sense it in James and Richard when they said goodbey. You could sense James wanted to say more as well but just could find the words and just easier to say "googdbye", I bet if all 3 where with the BBC still they'd still be doing this show full on to this day. I grew up watching these with the family so to see them gone even with the Grand Tour ending now to is so so sad and hard too.
The Grand Tour is still a thing, it's just all specials now.

This always leaves tears in my eyes even though I know there's tons of content with all 3 of them on Grand Tour. This was the end of an era. You could tell it pained both of them to say goodbye but BBC was stern about firing their best friend and they would have followed him even if there wasn't the promise of a huge Amazon budgeted show. RIP Top Gear. This show was something else in its prime. A work of art.

Yo, to everyone who’s sad or reminiscing about top gear and doesn’t know about The Grand Tour, look it up! The Grand Tour is Jeremy James and Hammond doing what they do best except they have basically free control.
Also the grand tour just doesn't quite have the same magic.
Old top gear had the same energy and rapport, not to mention first class camera work, but with some of the excesses reined in a bit.
First season of grand tour and Richard Hammond is equating ice cream with homosexuality and it's just a bit tryhard cringe.

Im right here after the last Grand Tour Special. I cant stop crying. They made my childhood. I can remember how i looked every episode with my grandpa who didn't made it to the last episode.
I would love to have been a fly on the wall of that studio on that day, especially after the cameras stopped recording.

The saddest part about "true" Top Gear ending was the fact we never got see them do threeway faceoff of the Ferrari The Ferrari, McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918. The Grand Tour one with d'Ambrosio was pretty lacklustre
I imagine Top Gear would of staged a cool race at somewhere like Silverstone, with the car makers supplying the drivers. Button, Vettel and Webber, employed by the three manufacturers at the time would of been awesome :) But alas it wasn't to be :(

you should watch the grand tour on amazon prime. It's like Top Gear with a higher budget, and it starts off with the threeway faceoff between the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918. Honestly amazon prime is worth it just for the grand tour.

@ConfusedOilPainter You're probably right about the manufacturer's not supporting this. However "big TV" will always have the option to rent the cars from private owners for the day. Top Gear did exactly that with the Enzo when Ferrari refused to lend them one.

This wasn’t a car show featuring James, Richard, and Jeremy, it was James’, Richards’, and Clarkson’s show featuring cars.
Seriously when the short Amazon series “our man in Japan” came out, I watched it for no other reason than to hear James May talk about stuff. Anyone else could’ve hosted it, and I would not have watched it. And that’s probably why the Grand Tour is doing so well in comparison to Top Gear, because people watch it for the hosts, not necessarily the cars.
