I have a really old thimble that was in a sewing chest I got at an auction. There were many holes worn in it. The stories that thimble could tell. Great ideas and good advice. Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Your quilt is beautiful. My hubby made me two clappers from spare hard wood and old cabinet knows for handles we had in basement. Yours was a great idea too. Thank you so much for your videos.
I’m trimming quilt blocks while watching your video. I absolutely love your videos and can barely wait until you post again. You are definitely my kind of quilter! I’m 73 years old and grew up playing under the quilt frames. You are such an inspiration.💕
❤ you are brilliant! You have come up with some wonderful ideas and thank you for sharing. I have purchased a couple of warping blocks due to your inspiration to add to my order from blocks to make a quilt eventually. hope it turns out as pretty as yours. I also admire your stick to it of Ness to get your quilts done. I jump from Quilt to Quilt and have many unfinished projects. I have made a project sheet that I’ve started filling out on each quilt and put in a binder. I am going through each one and finishing. Or at least working towards a finishing. I definitely want to try your hand quilting techniques. Thank you and happy Thanksgiving.
Your channel is such a highlight in my week.💕I’ve been quilting for twenty five years. I’m in my late forties and grew up on a farm. Your inventiveness to repurposing and using what is readily available isn’t silly at all, it is pretty much the founding principles of this beautiful art we call quilting. I recall many of my first quilts being out of similar products and roaming around the floor with my children and babies. My husband and I have worked hard and done well for ourselves so I’ve been fortunate enough to have an older Gammill to now do my quilts on. I recently repaired an old star of Bethlehem quilt which has worn due to use and much love.💕It was such a treat to revisit an old treasures on my journey it took me right back to that place and time. Many thanks from the North 🇨🇦
Oh Sue I love the new quilt. You did a great job with all of those neutrals and greens. I love the hardwood flooring clappers. Great Idea! Don't forget Fons and Porter on PBS as well. I love those old shows. We had our Thanksgiving in October here in Canada so I will spend the day quilting with friends but hubby will be glued to all of the football games. Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
L just love your jellyroll quilt! I'll need to sit down and watch again so I can write down what you did! I find that my batting is usually so creased that I smooth that out first, place my backing on top, and then flip the whole thing and sooth it out before adding my top. It usually works well for my smaller quilts. Thank you for the tip on the Dritz thimble...it's the only one I've ever used.
I love how you share your ideas. And thoughts with us. This video in particular has been fascinating, thank you. I have friends who quilt with a frame and several needles on the go. But clappers!! Never heard of any quilter using them, i will ask around. They reminded me of butter pats and shaping the butter for afternoon tea when i was a school matron. Many memories, great ideas. 🎉😂
It's nice to hear how you determine how to use up your fabrics by color. I'm not a "brown person" but this is going to be a beautiful quilt. That looks like a French General fabric from Moda that you started with. I'm also one who likes to "play" with various fabrics from my stash. Sometimes it's amazing how well older fabrics will look with today's lines!
Hi Sue. Back in the 80’s, I hand quilted a top using 4 needles at one time. We were living in Stowe, Vt. and I’d get up at 5:30 am, watch the sun come up and sit and hand quilt, until our 2 year old woke up around 7:00 a.m. Now I machine quilt and only occasionally hand quilt, which I love to do.
I've seen videos of people saying they use a broom to wash their bathtub, but using a broom on your quilt is ingenious! And your larger clappers look like they would work much better than the smaller clappers.
I love your new earth tone quilt-the design is perfect❣️I love to learn new ideas & a “clapper” is totally new to me. So amazing how innovative you are with making your own! Also the 4 needles at a time & a broom to do the smoothing…so cool!!😊
in the old time quilting bees they used to use many needles. one person would quilt as far as they could and give the needle to the person next to them.
I love all your new projects and especially the green stars. I also was curious about the clappers. The last time I visited my son in Horsham, I asked if he had any heavy wood pieces. He had a 4x4 oak piece of wood about 15” long so I took it home and tried using it as a clapper. I can pick it up easily and I was shocked at how well it worked. So feel free to ask a friend who does occasional construction to give you a piece or check your local lumber yard and maybe they will be really nice and just give you a piece. They often cut wood for people and have extra pieces in a drum next to their saw. Check it out. It works great! Keep up the great podcasts!
Brooming your quilt sandwich is BRILLANT. I used to do counted cross-stitch and had multiple needles with different colored threads to do what was in the hoop. Good idea to do handwork like that as well. I enjoy your RUclips videos.
Your bonus blocks are splendid and your "jelly roll" quilt is lovely. I don't think I would have ended up there or anywhere near. I love watching other's creative process. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thank you! That's something I love about quilting, how we could all start with the same fabrics and end up somewhere completely different. I find other people's ideas so fascinating, too.
Oh my goodness! The quilt is wonderful! The churn dash and star blocks blocks came together so beautifully! I’m about to sandwich a quilt. The broom idea is brilliant!
Hi,Sue. Good morning from Down Under. Re: clappers, some years ago,we re-installed a new kitchen counter. With my new sink, a hard wood, I think it's called Tasmanian oak came as a sink top cutting board.. But I never used it, so one day, I decided to turn them into clappers that I've always wanted but didn't want to spend money. I have a wanderful neighbour who is an excellent handyman and asked him to cut ir into clapper sizes. I got six of them all together!! They work perfectly for me.
I like your style! I love looking through my fabrics and dreaming about what I could do with each one or together. I loved your handquilted quilt and the new one for your bed with the hourglasses and Ohio star. All of our brains work differently and I like that we’re all creative in our own ways.
Love your “lessons learned” quilt, looks so huggable. One of my interests in quilting is really the stories, history, and even relationships (my mother was a quilter) that speaks of generational connections. I love the piecing aspect and trying to work up to hand quilting one as I like the look. All I’ve done is two pillow tops so far. Happy Thanksgiving!
Yet again I'm in awe of your beautiful work, even though your 'learning quilt' might not cut it for your skills anymore. I actually like the fading, it gives a sort of ombre effect as if it's meant to be like that. When you showed the jelly roll fabrics I thought oh they look very old school, but the way you combined them with the greens make them look way more contemporary than I could imagine when I look at them. Such beautiful work and exquisite colour choices!
OMGosh so gorgeous. The colours and the hues all jive. And mixing patterns. Fabulous ideas. Thank you for sharing your explanation of your process. Beautiful merci 🙏🏼 Chris Ont 🇨🇦👋 And grt broom , tape idea. My knees get so sore
I love your channel. It just popped up into my feed. I am a new quilter and so I don't have many scraps, books, or extra tools, but I love the way that you put quilts together and the way that all of your pieces come together to create such beauty. I love you clapper idea. I am considering hand quilting a quilt top that as given to my mother. I will definitely keep watching. Thank you so much for sharing your quilting life!
Your hourglass/star quilt is beautiful. When you first showed the hourglass blocks in the browns, Wasn't impressed, BUT when you added the stars, WOW! Looks great. Love your videos and I really like that you shared your home made notions, i.e. the clapper. Very creative and practical and Why Not? Happy Thanksgiving.
I loved your learning quilt. My first quilt had so many “mistakes” that I turned it into a”memory quilt”. I asked everyone who came into my home to put a few stitches in the quilt. Hardly anyone had ever quilted anything before so you can imagine the assortment of stitches I got. I made a big label for the back of the quilt explaining things and wrote all the names of those quilters on that label. Quite a lot of them have passed on and others have just drifted out of my life so it truly is a memory quilt, a treasured quilt.
You maey not like this comment, but I think You may be my kindred spirit!! I have a history of woodworking and am always using scraps of wood to repurpose for things...just hadn't thought of the clapper until now. Thanks for the idea and all of your many shares, you are awesome!!
The hourglass and star quilt is beautiful! I love that style of star. I never would have guessed your quilt was once red and navy...it's still a beautiful quilt though. Happy Thanksgiving!
Hi I found you this evening! I love your projects. The blue and white quilt oh my word! No I've never had 4 needles working but it sounds brilliant. I must give it a go as well as your other tips. I've been quilting almost 40 years. Happy Thanksgiving from Canada.
I have been sewing since I was in elementary school. I made garments primarily. I’m learning every time I watch your videos. Thanks for sharing your stories. I’m also a thrifter so I really appreciate your including your acquisitions.
Stars in the Forest.…like it.🇦🇺❤️ PS. Your old faded quilt…it really looks comforting. Just an old favorite reading quilt, a bit worn, faded, just the one to take outside and snuggle up on the porch type.
I have never hand quilted any of my quilts but I am working on an EPP quilt that I plan on hand quilting. I will definitely be trying your multiple needle idea. Also, I love your broom idea. Crawling around on the floor is not fun. Time to buy a new broom 😊
Love your clappers! I wanted one but didn’t want to spend the money the quilt stores and Amazon want. I bought a sample of unfinished oak trim and it works great! I use a leather thimble that I have had since 1991. I love it.
OK that broom tip is brilliant-just have to have a new clean broom that you protect from your family cleaning the floor with (as if…)! Love your brown quilt! Happy Thanksgiving!
While I haven't hand quilted anything bigger than a small piece in quite a while, I often had several threads going at once 😊 Love the use of the broom...maybe you'll start a trend !
Wow, that top is just lovely. I would love to be able to do that but my eyes won’t let me. However, I would like to learn how to do those flying geese. I kinda do but I think I need a refrigerator.😊😊😊 19:5019:5019:5019:5119:5119:51 hi Sue, I just wanted to you were speaking about using your broom to smooth out the parts of the quote to be ready for basting and I don’t do that because I don’t make quilts but I do make little ones and however I do use my broom, believe it or not to smooth out my bedspread on my bed you know I love a nice smooth bed so that’s what I do because I’m too sure I’m very short anyway, and it just works that’s a great hint. I think a lot of people will use it.
i have a home made clapper too! Great Minds and all that. Mine is a piece of oak stair topper - with a wooden Finial for the end of curtain rods screwed in as a handle. I like it because I can put a lot of pieces under it since mine is about 8" x 11".
Your clapper sounds very fancy! I wonder if all our homemade clappers will end up in a museum one day, with some historian trying to figure out what the heck they were.
Happy Thanksgiving - I'm watching this on Thursday morning before I get out of bed:) Wish it would snow and then get instantly up to 65, then snow then get instantly to 65 again. That would be an enjoyable winter for me - the snow I love, it's the cold without the snow I don't appreciate as much! WOW - I love the direction you went with your brown based jelly roll - looks absolutely fantastic! The bonus blocks with birds are so pretty to - adding that to my block goals. Gosh you are creative like me - I'm sure friends who see my home-made contraptions are thinking why don't I just go out and buy such and such product?! Thanks but my clapper works just fine and it's from things I already had. When I come across one at a thrift sale I'll pick it up. Maybe. Or maybe not! I enjoy my creativity and I'm enjoying yours too. And yes I never knew a thimble could wear out! BROOM AND TAPE ARE BRILLIANT! Mine would need a tag "Quilting Broom Do Not Touch" kind of like my quilting scissors so hubs won't grab it to sweep up the kitchen! 5 stars to you - you win the unconventional tools prize:) This isn't toooo unconventional but I use 2 flexible flyer type snow sliders (taped together with a hole punched out for my needle) as my machine quilting surface by taping them onto my machine table - it lets me slide my quilt around more easily as I quilt on my regular sewing machine. And my most used ironing board is an actual board: a piece of 12 x 24 wood wrapped with batting then ironing material and held in place on bottom with packing tape. I store it against the side of my table and I plop it up onto cutting mat to iron - have been using it for over 5 years. Much easier than using my "real" ironing board that I don't have the room to just leave out all the time. I appreciate that you both fully enjoyed that last quilt and that you are still learning from it.
The Star and Hourglass quilt is really beautiful. Is it alright if I copy your design? I’ve never used a clapper, but thanks to your recommendation, I’m going to ask my husband to make me one. And using a broom to smooth out your quilt sandwich-absolutely brilliant! My first two quilts tell the story of a very bumpy learning process. Unfortunately, I no longer have them. One had completely faded and worn out, not even anything left for a cutter. And the other was given to a homeless man. It was nice to see yours, and to hear its story. Happy Thanksgiving, and Happy Quilting!
4 needles, I saw someone on instagram using multiple needles, I of course cannot find it again to share. Also, about 20 years ago when I was going to a quilt guild in person, I saw a lady using multiple needles.
Thank you for sharing. My question is, if you use cotton or wool batting, can you machine wash your quilt, or will the batting shrink? I do a lot of other crafts, but this I don't know.
I use a batting which is 80 percent cotton and 20 percent polyester, with scrim (which adds stability). I put all of my quilts in the wash. It should say on your batting how much shrinkage to expect-- 4 percent is normal for a cotton batting. When you wash it the first time, it will shrink a bit, giving the quilt a crinkled texture. The blocks and quilting will look most clear and square before washing, but I really prefer the look after it's been washed. I don't use wool batting, but I believe it is about the same as cotton-- they can be washed without shrinking, but washing in a machine will age the quilt over time. If you wanted to protect it from damage, hand washing in a tub would be the best.
Im surprised that fabric was navy blue to begin with. I would have thought colors just get lighter while maintaining their original color. Yikes. That said, i like the color it is now.
I love your common sense, make do style! Totally my type of person🤭 I try to see everything not for what it IS, but as materials and what it could be.
Love your hourglass quilt. It's so pretty. Thanks for your tips.
I have a really old thimble that was in a sewing chest I got at an auction. There were many holes worn in it. The stories that thimble could tell. Great ideas and good advice. Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
I’ve never heard of anyone wearing a hole in a metal thimble. You are hardcore, Girl! 🤣
Working with my scraps as we speak, clipping dog ears into my jar, using my clappers, and enjoying the whole process. Love the broom idea!
Your quilt is beautiful. My hubby made me two clappers from spare hard wood and old cabinet knows for handles we had in basement. Yours was a great idea too. Thank you so much for your videos.
I love that many of us have homemade clappers!
I’m trimming quilt blocks while watching your video. I absolutely love your videos and can barely wait until you post again. You are definitely my kind of quilter! I’m 73 years old and grew up playing under the quilt frames. You are such an inspiration.💕
My DH made me clappers using 2 2x4’s glued together. He sanded them nicely and used an old wood drawer knob for the handles.

Thanks for sharing your thrifty & useful ideas! Quilting can get very expensive & these ideas are appreciated.
It sure can. I love making do with what's more affordable, because it gives a uniquely scrappy look as well as costing less.
Love your quilts! Enjoy listening to you explain every step! Great tips and tricks! Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving 🍁🦃 💕💕
Happy Holidays to you and your family! Thanks for blessing us again with your awesome videos!!! 🤩🌟🌟🌟🌟🙏🏽

Your clapper is great. I like it because it’s bigger than the one I bought. So creative

Beautiful quilt!!!!! Yes, I thread more than 1 needle. I don't have a clapper. BUT - I had a small cheese wooden cutting g board and I use that.

I did the same thing with that thimble. I wore a hole in mine!

It doesn't sound silly to me. I like your ideas
Hello Sue, I use the same thimbles as you do. Years ago my thimble got a hole , I just could'nt believe it. Have a nice day and happy quilting, Heidi
I have a wanderful neighbour who is an excellent handyman and asked him to cut ir into clapper sizes. I got six of them all together!! They work perfectly for me.
I would use the flannels for a rag quilt.
I like your style! I love looking through my fabrics and dreaming about what I could do with each one or together. I loved your handquilted quilt and the new one for your bed with the hourglasses and Ohio star. All of our brains work differently and I like that we’re all creative in our own ways.
I am learning by watching you explain your thought process as you design your quilts. Thanks for including this in your video.
I am learning so much from your videos. I love your frugality. I’m hunting for wood flooring to make myself some clappers.
I would never be able to crawl around on the floor as you say you do to pin out your layers….love the broom idea, though.🤗
Very resourceful information - thank you!

And grt broom , tape idea. My knees get so sore
My cousin used to paint all her cheap jewelry with clear polish to make them last longer.
I love the quilt. Thank you
I get so excited when I see you pop up! I love your projects, your stories and all your tips! Thank you for sharing…..and Happy Thanksgiving!

Genious way to hand quilt with lots of needles! ❤️❤️❤️
Greetings from Bucks Co PA! I’ve been binge watching you today and really like your creativity and finishes. Your broom trick is genius!
Hello from right down the road! I'm so glad you're enjoying my little tricks!
Love brown one
You maey not like this comment, but I think You may be my kindred spirit!! I have a history of woodworking and am always using scraps of wood to repurpose for things...just hadn't thought of the clapper until now. Thanks for the idea and all of your many shares, you are awesome!!

I never would have guessed your quilt was once red and navy...it's still a beautiful quilt though.

Thanks for sharing your unconventional ideas with us.
Just came in from the barn and have a new video to watch while I eat breakfast! Thanks!
love your homemade clapper
I love going through scraps!
For 20 years I've been using a old hard back quilt book as a clapper.
That's a good idea-- something we all have available without needing to buy one.
@@fromsmallthings509 Learned it from Jinny Beyer years ago.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours and don't cut up that quilt. You can still snuggle under it on a rainy day.
Stars in the Forest.…like it.🇦🇺❤️ PS. Your old faded quilt…it really looks comforting. Just an old favorite reading quilt, a bit worn, faded, just the one to take outside and snuggle up on the porch type.

OK that broom tip is brilliant-just have to have a new clean broom that you protect from your family cleaning the floor with (as if…)! Love your brown quilt! Happy Thanksgiving!
Yes-- I use the same broom to sweep up scraps in my sewing room, but it doesn't touch anything but fabric!
While I haven't hand quilted anything bigger than a small piece in quite a while, I often had several threads going at once 😊 Love the use of the broom...maybe you'll start a trend !
thx

Happy thanksgiving for you too!😊❤
The colors are beautiful
You could dye the faded quilt, each area would be a tone different!
I found the instagram photo. :o) I had to come pack here to find your handle.
I think the broom idea is genius. Do you use a soft nylon bristle broom or a stiff straw broom?
My brooms are full of dirt and dog hair..is that a new broom dedicated to only the quilts?
What brand of batting do you use and what kind
Im surprised that fabric was navy blue to begin with. I would have thought colors just get lighter while maintaining their original color. Yikes. That said, i like the color it is now.
I hope your using a clean broom that has never been used to clean the floor🤷♀️
Commonsense. Of cause use a broom just for that purpose only. Not one you use for cleaning and sweeping up dust and dirt.
Do you hang quilt for people
