- One of the biggest songs I’ve never heard. I don’t know why I haven’t! I can’t believe I’ve never heard it!
This was a completely different side to Metallica than I’ve seen before and I have to say, it’s one that I loved! I loved the intricacies of the vocals, harmonies, guitar parts....everything came together perfectly.
This was a great start to Metallica Weekend and I’m looking forward to listening to more Metallica, so stick around for more!
Let me know what you thought of the song!

Metallica always had one singer: James Hetfield. He always kept improving his singing. That's why his voice changed from album to album, tour to tour.
*Jason Newsted wants to know your location*
@@boysfromthebush2013 As does Dave Mustaine.
@@PrismaticFitness I may be wrong but I don’t think dave ever did any vocals for Metallica
@@PrismaticFitness Dave Mustaine cannot sing you just have to accept that fact.
Wow,to experience this song for the first time, I envy you
So powerful. And very beautiful.
Yes same original vocalist. He’s incredible
I'VE BEEN A METAL HEAD FOR FORTY YEARS, AND WHEN I'M FEELING FUNKY OR PISSED OFF ABOUT BEING JUDGED BY SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T KNOW ME I PUT THIS SONG ON GRAB MY GUITAR AND GET OVER IT....SO IT'S METAL BECAUSE NOTHING ELSE MATTERS!
Why are you yelling? :-)
Nice mate. We've all gotta have a healthy outlet. I take my kayak and fish for hours. I love Metallica with plenty of beers . Some awesome times spent beside the fire listening to this
James didn't want to be the vocalist, but they had no one else for the job so he did it... And we are all better for it. In all its simplicity it is one of the best pieces of music ever written... It just takes you on a journey and it just speaks to you and your soul.
Every metal ballad must contain beautiful guitar solo
Yes
React to Metallica - Sanitarium it has both sides of his vocals
react to Metallica - Bleeding me. its about James'' alcohol addiction. very underrated song and amazing vocal performance aswell
I agree
@No One nope not that powerful
Second this
Love the S&M version
Shit I thought it was about my ex. lol
Who in the world told you that this is not metal? I mean, _of course_ it's metal. What do they think this is? Pop? I don't think so. Just because it's at a ballad tempo doesn't mean it's not metal.
It's called power ballad. This is not new. A lot of rock bands used to do it back in the 80s, like November rain, Faithfully, etc
Agreed :D
chewingpiano ya...... this is in a whole other league to just label it as a “power ballad” ... seriously undermines how great this song is
Power balad? Did smoke or drink? 😄
@@jensmoller6999 back in day anything from Scorpions, Boston or any other rock band with slow tempos were power ballads, now many bands have it without the 80's feeling, as long as it's slow, I teach music in several languages and you? You're the one possing, not the 1st one nor the last one pretending to be an expert at what they're not good at
one of the best songs ever...
the feelings are indescribable
On another note - the footage comes from a documentary called ‘a year and a half in the life of....’ about the making of the album. Well worth a watch if you haven’t seen it, fascinating stuff.
The greatest band of all time!
Anyone who says this isn't metal because it's a power ballad has bumped their head, really fucking hard.
It's such a memory trip for me. It's my generation and everything that encompassed it. Looking at their young faces and long hair here, and they are just as I remember all of us being at that time. Young, wild but down to earth, idealistic, caring, and unsure of ourselves in this big world. Capable of great compassion without the jading that happens with age. I thank God all of these things are forever captured on video, so I never forget that time.
Its better when you realize this song is an expression of love and friendship and respect by James the singer to Lars the drummer. They spoke about it once on the Howard Stern Show. Its such a beautiful song
Really??
I absolutely love that intro.
One of my favourite intros of all time both to hear and to play.
Hi Tommy, like others have said, yes this is metal that is what Metallica do, it’s just a metal ballad rather than a harder/heavier/faster beat, as you are becoming more aware, the genre of metal comes in all speeds, heaviness, sound, composition, but it is all still metal even if it doesn’t smash your head in, cheers mate
Yes has a fabulous voice and that is why they are so good and the band, OMG what talent
I love this song so much. Can go to sleep to this - it’s so beautiful & powerful
I honestly don't remember the first time I heard this song, i think around 93 or 94 when I was a kid. Its like Star Wars to me, I dont remember a time without knowing this. This also happens to be my all time favorite song. Kirk's solo at the end...holy fuck...what an amazing piece!
I remember hearing this song for the first time on the radio. I had friends into Metallica but (at the time) I was into more top40 stuff. It got radio play due to the simi-ballad arrangement. I remember saying out loud “HOLY SHIT! He CAN really sing!”.
After that, I picked up every Metallica tape (yes tape. Lol) I could afford as a poor highschool kid. Everyone else was turned to them by ONE but for me, it was this.
I see it as a love song, how I feel about my Highschool sweetheart.
Interesting messages? Unforgiven I, Unforgive II, Unforgiven III. You will not regret. All 3 songs by metallica.
It's scary that this is 30 years old. I was 13 when this came out and I'd already been a fan for 3 years by that point. This was off of their last true great album.
well Hardwired is up there with the Black Album imo but yea damn.. they've been rocking on forever it feels like
Death Magnetic and Hardwired have entered the chat..
Yeah, for the first time :) This song is everywhere for years - Radio, TV, Internet, even your friends need to sing it sometimes.
You don’t believe it was the first time?
@@ThomasJ_Music if you haven't lived in the basement for the last 20 years, I don't believe it
Mateusz Marciniak plenty of big songs people have asked for that ive said no to, because I’ve heard it before. I don’t know why this would be any different 🤷🏻♂️
I play it everyday in my clinic.
It kinda relief for me and my patients.
I knew Metallica through this song I was like 14 y old back in 1993.
I might be misremembering, but I think I remember that the story was that he was plucking his guitar whilst on the phone on tour to a partner a long way away, and from that state of mind and from those plucks, this song sprang up. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Story goes for there beloveds back home.

Indeed a legendary classic, glad it found it's way your direction 😀
I remember watching you do this reaction a year ago today.
Just came back to watch it in 2021.

Metallica is the best
Vocal range he has is varied, you want to hear similar side of Metallica, try another one of their under rated songs “Bleed Me”. Enjoy.
Well done fella! This was my wife and I"s first dance at our wedding, top reaction 🤘🤘
yes same singer
Ok ok ok!! New subscriber here. Loved the HELL outta this react! I've seen this and Pentatonix doing their "Daft Punk Medley" Thats all I needed to see man!! Will be checking all of em out. Super job man!!
Thank you! Glad to have you with us! 🙌
Nice job. I just came across this reaction on my feed. I gave you a subscribe, because of your comments.
Thanks man! Much appreciated!
Yes it's always been James Alan Hetfield, "Papa Het" and one of the greatest metal frontman of all time and the absolute greatest rhythm guitarist of all time!!
Hello from Russia =) Try "Enter Sandman", It's song from The Black Album like "Nothing Else Matters". I hope you'll enjoy that!
If you listen to Enter Sandman, also listen to the Motorhead cover. A classic band, covering a classic band. Nothing beats that, if it's done with both respect for the original and your own specific style and Motorhead delivers on both sides.
Also do the 91 live version from Moscow but only if you haven't seen it. It's epic!
If you can find a decent version of this song played on the hammered dulicmer, it is ethereal. So many play this too fast or too high of a pitch. I've heard it played perfectly on the hammered dulcimer by Tim Sismek.
Metallica - Halo on Fire... Beautiful vocals by James...On their last album
Gotta do "Enter Sandman." Creepy but highly entertaining vibe about childhood monsters, and how to a child "boogeymen" are not imaginary. Great buildup, extremely catchy.
To hear how melodic and deep Metallica's music is, check out Apocalyptical. It's a cello trio who do covers off Metallica songs
One of my favorite Metallica songs. I love plenty of their other songs...but like you, I find this song is more personal.
Would love to see you react to a much newer song of Disturbed. These guys are also know for their heavy metal side ..and for their cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence"....but they do have a song that's way out of character for them called, " Hold Onto Memories."
Or try the Reason to fight from Disturbed or inside the fire. It's talk about suicide. Disturbed are so good with interpetation.
Welcome home Sanatorium,The four Horsemen,Harvester of Sorrow, The day that never comes Quebec live.
Metallica - Fade To Black
Done a few weeks ago! Loved it! Be sure to check it out
@@ThomasJ_Music, I just watched it. I enjoy your reactions.
CyclopsRevolution thanks very much!
Where have you been hiding if you haven’t heard this one 😉
and he never could have seen mtv when that song came out... ^^
The Black Album is the first Metallica album I bought, on a cassette. When I do Metallica album marathon, this album feels different, in a good way. Guitar tone and layering, music production, vocals, lyrics, guitar solos, music arrangements are top notch. Your thoughts are well said. Hope you enjoy your day and stay safe. Subbed! :]
Just come across your channel and i love it! I'm an old metal head! Been to probably 25 or more live concerts. Seen metallica 5 times and everytime was awesome! I have a suggestion for you, check out Metallica's cover of Ecstasy of Gold they started most concerts with a short sound bite but did end up doing a full cover. It has a short but very good guitar Solo from Kirk Hammett
Thanks Jerry! Next week (17th) I’ll be doing a livestream of the Seattle 89 concert! Looking forward to it!
you'd definitely love 'the unforgiven' by metallica too
You never heard this up to that point, really? Bet you are glad you did... beautiful, beautiful song
Metallica fan? Your one of us brother!!Metallica instrumental Orion, you will love it,im subscribed!
I did Orion a few weeks ago when I did Metallica weekend! I really need to make a Metallica Playlist if I haven’t already!
@@ThomasJ_Music I'm new,Alright I think you need to really check out Rob Zombie Dragula,go with the video, very cool, and then go back to his band White Zombie, More human than human,Black Sunshine,Thunder kiss,Try out some Judas Priest,Electric Eye,Black Sabbath War Pigs, you want something Epic hear it is RAINBOW STARGAZOR,just some good suggestions,if I had to pick one,it would be STARGAZOR it will blow your mind!
Nice reaction... Subscribed you now
This was great, new subscriber!
Who cares if it is metal (or heavy of whatnot)? What it definitely *is* is a great song :)
The Black album was the first collaboration between metallica and Bob Rock. Bob's influenced them by pushing them through more complex and layered harmonies and musical concepts. To me there is definitely a more " produced" feeling to this album. And it obviously worked because the Black album shot them into the musical stratosphere.
If you want to listen to a different side of this song, listen to the elevator version of this song, the orchestra is a lot louder and James is alone with his guitar, I don’t know which version I prefer, but I think you’d like it
Alright mate, just stumbled across your channel.
I think you maybe from the same neck of the woods as myself..
That's Manchester.
Anyways..
Nothing else matters..
James hetfield wrote this or got the idea for it whilst talking on the phone to his girlfriend at the time.
So you were right on the right train of thought.
Nice break down and understand of the song and structure and how it comes over..
I'm going to check out what else you have done pal.
Nice one, I may be subscribing to you soon as..🤔🤟😁
Metal musicians are overall great melodists... Metallica. Opeth. Dream theater. Alter bridge. Devin Townsend ect ect....
Are you ready to try the new generation of Rock'n'roll and metal?
I'll be glad if you could react to the followings:
Dust to dust by The Warning (live at Lunario).
Thick skin by Motion Device.
Never again by GFM.
I have the feeling you are going to enjoy these.
Thanks a lot, great reaction to a great song!
if you liked this...other ballards will tickle your fancy....try Poison: Something to Believe In...also try Poison: Every Rose Has Its Thorns...guarantee to hit your heart
Who ever told you this isnt metal, lie to you. They literally have the wors metal in their name. Thrash is a type of metal. Dont matter the speed of the song.
I hope Creeping Death is coming, you have to check out the moscow 91 show, but first check the lyrics video.
Epic Riffs, Epic story
Stoned Mountain Unicorn it is. Tomorrow in fact, although I think I’ve been asked to do Seattle, 89? Could be wrong though
@@ThomasJ_Music Seattle is hella fast, just a heads up haha. Main riff and Solo is underwhelming in the live shows, and i dont know if your gonna get the lyrics ;)
Stoned Mountain Unicorn so I’ve made the mistake before of jumping straight in with a live version, not liking it and getting stick off viewers for it! This time, I’ve listened to the studio version, I get the song, got the lyrics. Tomorrow’s reaction is purely to the live performance of a song I already know. Hopefully that will help
@@ThomasJ_Music Nice!
@@ThomasJ_Music How about "Battery" then? Again, Seattle 89 is brutal but studio version is epic
Hi m8 I subed and thanks for the comment if u love that u will like the unforgiven and on a side note to live is to die is another cliffs work the last thing he wrote I think any way stay safe and love yur vid
What do you mean you've never heard of Nothing Else Matters? It literally played everywhere a couple decades back
I must’ve been under a rock
Not everybody listened to rock/metal 20’s ago.
Andrew Scragg 91 lol all of a sudden I feel terribly old. 🤪
No leaf clover, from s&m
Just in case you aren't aware o it, many (most?) metal and hard rock groups have some ballads amongst their catalogues, and they're generally amazing. Some of the best tunes from Dio, for example, were his ballads. IMHO, of course - I can't possibly speak for anyone else, but you have to say these things these days or someone immediately gets offended. ;p
A lot late, but yes he is the same singer always has been :=) xo
same lead singer
I think you should react to "Welcome home Sanitarium". It was part of another song but they decided to make 2 separate songs. I believe the other was "Orion" but don't quote me on that which you should also react to. It's a instrumental. Also the Unforgiven is a masterpiece but you've probably heard it. That guitar solo is the absolute best!!
I hope you react to the newer material like Here Comes Revenge, The Day that Never Comes, Now that Were Dead, Unforgiven 3, all excellent
Watch the video for Here Comes Revenge
I'd much rather see the whole trilogy of Unforgiven, one after the other. To see how the mood changes, how the lyrical I grows from song to song, and so on.
Also avoid fan made videos. They’re usually unrelated to the artistic intent.
This is the first song James learned how to finger pick a guitar and he wanted to showcase it in the video.
Nice story and sentiment but you’re off bud... he wrote this song as something for himself because he missed his gf and friends... the other guys overheard it occasionally and was like “that sounds good”, he never intended it to be a Metallica song at all.. and the footage from this video was shot during the making of the album, like a year or so before this song became a radio single, so no, he wasn’t trying to show off in a video, Het doesn’t need to show off, especially at that point in their career, he’d proven he was/is a god long before this
@@davidvied2507 awww look at this kid thinking he knows something when he doesn't lmao nice try kid
Michael Kamen behind this song
Ultimately, this song is responsible for the S&M concerts.
I think fade to black started their path their mate.
@@linus5171 This was the first song that Michael Kamen contributed to, for the string sections. It was the introduction.
If I recall correctly, James hurt his voice a bit from singing improperly, so he took some vocal lessons when recording this album... so you can sort of tell how he has learned to sing better on this song and album.
KabukiKid I thought he blew his voice out shortly after the Black Album was released
Yes it's the same singer
If you want to get to know Metallica, watch “A year and a half in the the life of Metallica”. Part 1 Making the Black Album. Part 2 Touring the Album. Some kind of Monster is also a must watch. 👍🏻
Some Kind of Monster will make him run away screaming xD
Running away from the sound of “that snare” 😂
i'd like to recommend a song by Mother Love Bone called Chloe Dancer / Crown of Thorns i really think you'd dig it
oh if you liked this, listen to the elevator version .. that's the way James wanted it to sound originally
I don't care what anybody says. This IS metal. It's super-duper soft metal, but metal nonetheless.
There's only one singer in Metallica. James Hetfield.
Of course it's metal. It's Metallica.
Yes, he is the ONLY singer for Metallica.
*Jason Newsted wants to know your location*
james start to got vocal lessons because he was destroing is voice . he start with a hight tone now he is lower so the all show is toned down to keep it up
Metal. Literally in the name int it?
Hey, enjoy the jam bud. 🖖
Yes....same singer.....James Hetfield
Why shouldn’t this be metal? Every metal band has it’s ballads and most of them are very nice to excellent.
Interesting chord structures: Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, King Crimson, Nightwish.
hell, even motorhead have one.
i think they secretlky just wanted me to do an extra metallica song really :D
Just for laughs and your own entertainment, check out Steven Seagulls cover.
i dont understand how you can play guitar and not know this song
Because I grew up playing stuff like Oasis and The Beatles etc. Although in the last few weeks, I have been learning this! 😆
Same singer than one, mate
This was about the breakup of his marriage.
Did you notice the violins in this song? No? Listen carefully...
Yeah..that was the San Francisco symphony
You thought this was good react to metallica s&m nothing else matters version
Best version of this song🤘
Couldn't leave the likes at 665... Made it 666 for ye.
😂😂 thank you!!
Try "Metallica - Orion"
Sunday 👍
@@ThomasJ_Music TY
Dafuq said this wasn't "metal"...??
Metal can/does have ballads in it.
Some people should really keep their pie holes closed and let everyone assume they're stewpid, instead of opening their mouths and proving it 😆💯
Looks like you have never visited a music shop. Because any time you enter one, there is a 99% chance someone will be noodling this one on the guitar.
(Unless it's a shop which banned "Nothing Else Matters", "Freebird" and "Smoke on the Water" from the premises.)
I’ve heard the opening phrases being played at college, just never heard the song in full before
Surprised you haven't heard this before. It's one of those covers that's arguably better than the original, much like Disturbed's cover of 'Sound of Silence' or Johnny Cash's cover of 'Hurt'
Cover? Huh?
@@donaldcampbell9483 Ah fuck, you're right...for some reason I had it in my head that this was "Turn the Page" not "Nothing Else Matters"....I'm an idiot
Alright I'm convinced you have to listen to Ronnie James Dio when he fronted RAINBOW,and solo in Dio,but that Trip had to start with Rainbow STARGAZOR,and then Dio THE LAST IN LINE!! I have suggestions in every genre but Rap,that I really don't like,by the way I was Back Stage twice back in the 80s when Metallica was underground before they really hit big!I saw them when Dave Mustaine was in the band!
The ones said that this ain´t metal have no clue of what metal is. If Metallica ain´t metal then what is? 😂
