  • The FlowSand-Filter is an upwards flowing filter with continuous filter bed cleaning. In contrast to other filter systems the filtration process is not interrupted for backwashing.

This is interesting... I've never seen or heard of a sand filter that appears to wash itself consistently during operation to decrease the need for maintenance. I'd like to learn more about the science behind the crossflow in which water pushes up past the falling sand, whilst dirty sand is drawn upwards from the center...
How is it possible to use air, of all things, to move the sand upwards? Does it have something to do with the "dirt" making it like mud, increasing density to allow a sort of hydraulic flow?
I see there are valves on the top and bottom of the tank; is air pumped up from the bottom while being sucked out the top to create the necessary push-pull force to move the sand?
I assume the air portion required for moving sand must remain powered at all times; what happens if that air flow stops? Basically, is it bad, or can it be controlled? (for the purpose of my next question)
Knowing the filter performs this continuous wash process and generates waste water, approximately how much water is wasted? Gallons-per-Hour?

About the sand up flow: I would assume there is a vacuum created on the top of the sand pipe + there is a pressure directed downwards created from the inlet water. Thus this pushes the sand throw the pipe. You can even consider as a diffusion process of the sand.

what type of sand filter is this?
