This was the best -simple and direct I am a wife and mom, motivated to fix things myself while my husband is at work. Today is Sunday going down to get my new part. Home depot has all the little plastic faucet inserts for my home built in Oct 2000. Nobody carries in stock, I ordered and picked up yesterday, like brand new ....yes I subscribed ...great information for sure
Thank you for this super helpful video! I was able to fix a super leaky shower head on my own with this video. My cartridge was a bit different, but I just took the old one with me to the hardware store to make sure I got the correct one. Saved me time, money, and potential water damage. Thank you
My dripping faucet was so annoying and wasted so much water. Thank you for this video! I borrowed a strap wrench from a neighbour and got it fixed myself. Thank you for showing us how! You made it look easy and gave me confidence to try it.
Old cartridge was stuck in very well (might have been 20 years old?). I had to pry it out with a screwdriver. And pushing the new one in was a bit difficult, but overall not too bad.
Great video. I replaced mine yesterday and saved a lot of money. It was super easy. I'm glad I didn't call a plumber. But I did notice that these Delta cartridges wear out quickly. We'll see how long this one lasts. Thanks for your video.
Thank you so much for this video! My faucet has leaked for way too long and this made the repair process a breeze. I screwed the knob back onto the post and with a few wiggles it was out!
Thank you for this tutorial!!!With this video and some Google Meet oversight from my dad (he lives in another state), I was able to fix my faucet that went from a drip to a leak. Bless you!! I am very grateful and appreciate you.
This video is terrific and spot on from beginning to end. Home Depot stocks the Delta RP19804 for roughly $65.00 while a small strap wrench runs about $13.00. For about $78.00 this is a simple DIY application that a licensed plumber might bang you $325.00 for and it only requires about 20 minutes of labor to complete the job.
WOW!! Took me 15 minutes. Worked great. What a fantastic video sir!! Succinct and well filmed. Thank you so much. My Delta handle was 20 years old. I bought the Delta RP19804 as suggested (Home Depot-around $54). I also bought a strap wrench ($12). I’d highly suggest buying the strap wrench from the beginning. The bonnet, as anticipated, could not be removed by hand. I would have definitely made the critical mistake of putting a plumber’s wrench to it and damaging it. Strap wrench removed it with ease (and I’d never used one before). One lesson learned- after turning the water off, fully bleed the faucet to the shower before starting. I didn’t do that after turning off the water and OMG the water shot out like a fire hydrant when I pulled out the cartridge. I got absolutely soaked.
@Kingdom Cre8tive When you shut off the main water supply to the house, there’s still so much water retained in your pipes. Unlike my sinks, my showers don’t have a shutoff valve at the shower. I had to turn off the water to the entire house.
This is a great video. The steps are so well explained and illustrated. I had a strap wrench in the kitchen for removing lids, and it worked beautifully on this job. Removing the old cartridge and pushing the new one back in were the hardest parts for me (74 yr old female), but with a little patience it worked just like in the video. Thank you very much for this great video!
Great video, but you should add something about the two springs and gaskets behind the cartridge. Those are often the cause for the leak, and are cheap and easy to replace while you have the cartridge out. When you (hopefully) do so, make sure to tell them to put insert the thinner end of the springs into the gaskets.
I discovered a minor leakage in shower and made a phone call to plumber. He quoted $250 to fix it. I decided to give it a try myself and came across your wonderfully well articulated video. When i pulled out the kit i found rust and mold buildup on one side of housing. I cleaned it up, put back the same old valve and viola no more leakage.
Your video was very helpful although removing the old cartridge for our tub/shower required WD40, a strap wrench, vice grips and amazing feats of strength. The new cartridge wouldn't go in that last 1/4" but the brass ring helped to squeeze it into place. Thanks.
Got my done today. Thanks for the video. I have a hard getting the old one out. I had a strap wrench that I used and the bonnet came out without much effort. I did have to get some plumbers grease to lube the o rings. It would not fully seat in there until I got the grease and it went right in. No more leaks.
Thank you for the great, informative video. Including that part number helped immensely when I made my quick trip before close to Lowe's. My old valve broke in half when I removed it, so had to pry it out with a flathead and some pliers. Easy peasy!
Thank you for posting this video. My leaky shower faucet was stressing me, but your video made my task so much easier. The step by step direction and replacement part was everything I needed.
This...was...perfect! Even got the rubber strap wrench as suggested (and it worked wonderfully). I wonder how much money this one video has saved people. Maybe $200 / house visit?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have never changed a faucet before but you made it so very easy to follow and I was able to change it successfully. I was trying to surprise my family and do it myself, so I did not ask for help. I followed along and all it was seamless until I pulled out the cartridge and the water came out like Niagara Falls. 💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦 all over the place I had to call for help to go and turn off the water valve. Yes, I skipped turning the water off as I figured it would be a little drip. It was a wet mess but once water was turned off I was the Victor and fixed the leaking faucet. Thank you for the easy steps.
You made it look so easy ! I've been a plumber for 50yrs and never was able to remove the cap nut as its called without a wrench. Very few if any people have a strap wrench. I haven't had one for years. Many people have called me to bail them out. They put a pipe wrench on the cap nut which pinches the nut. The older models have two brass casting attached by 3 short pieces of 3/8"OD tubing which twist off and ruin the faucet casting and requires replacement of the valve in the wall. Not a cheap job! So if you're not sure if you're capable call a pro, you'll save $$$$$. If you succeed in the repair put some kinda lub on the threads for the next repair. If had to cut the nut over the on an angle and spread it open to release it many times. A word to the wise , not as easy as the video shows ..............
Mine really was that easy I don't own a strap wrench and I got it. But I agree sometimes I'll get comments from people who have had a more difficult time than others - and if they can't get it out with a strap wrench I would call a plumber to help, but there are several people who have done it successfully watching this video and saved a ton of money. There are for sure good times to call a plumber - but I say if it's a Cartridge try it yourself first, it's generally pretty simple to replace. Putting lube on the threads is a great tip.
The nut was stuck for me , tried a strap Wrench, no luck, but what worked was gently tapping a hammer on the nut all around for a while and then all the corrosion inside broke free and the nut finally came apart. When I reinstalled it , I made sure to put some silicone inside thread so next time it would be easier to remove.. thanks for the help.
Should this be replaced if it's not leaking? Mine is 17 years old and it's ok but was thinking should I replace it before it breaks (preventive maintenance)? Thank you for the video.
Great video showing the exact process clear and quick. I need to rip down a 3 piece shower stall so I guess I just need to unscrew the "crystal" handle and the big round chrome piece with the Hot/Cold markings? In this case I won't have to shut off the water? Rather not shut down the water for the entire building if I don't have to. Going to check out some of your other videos now.
I would still shut off the water, if you take the ring off that holds the cartridge in, without that ring the cartridge will shoot right out. If that ring is on you don’t need to turn it off.
Update- Aside from finding a snake 🐍 where I shut off the water hehe.. I managed to have no more bathtub leak and I can finally sleep not hearing that annoying drip 💧.. 😀
Is the part number on the piece I am removing or do I need to take it out and bring it with me to the hardware store? I justcwatched a different video and both parts look exactly the same, but you both listed different part numbers. I want to make sure I get the right part.
I would take a picture of the one you have, or if you are able to take the one you have to the store that would be even better. The thing with taking it in is that you won't have water until it's done.
When you turn the main water off and begin the repair, should you turn the faucet knob to the full on position before taking it apart or turn it on to drain water and then turn it off and then begin repair? Or does it even matter?
I’m sorry I don’t check as often as I should just saw your question. You probably already found an answer. Usually, the cartridge number is on the cartridge itself.
Yeah, I just have channel locks. Turns the whole pipe. Gonna need a strap wrench on the one peice and something to hold onto the pipe. But if that whole pipe twists off, what happens? Broken?
Yep you forgot to talk about the little plastic stop piece that goes on after inserting the cartridge. I got the right cartridge but there are two plastic pieces. One came with the part and that is a flat disc and the old has a stopper on it. But both don’t fit on there. And the cartridge stops already. So I think because the video doesn’t clarify, I just kept what they gave and didn’t add the old stopper. Also, maybe tell people the easiest way to pull out the cartridge is to put the knob back on and put the screw in and THEN pull the knob and the cartridge comes right out. Just saying you can make a much more detail video. But thanks though.
What happens if I don't shut the water off? Is shutting the water off necessary? Sorry if it's a dumb question. My dad was the one who would do these things. he passed away on February and I am now the one who has taken over and making sure things around the house are fixed or repaired. Thank you
Sorry about your dad, you're brave to take on those jobs. It's not a dumb question. That faucet is what's keeping the water from pouring out so it super important to find the water and shut it off at a different point in the house. The most sure way is the main water valve.
Would you mind to include the model number of the faucet that takes that particular cartridge? It is usually written on that decorative plate. Thank you anyhow!
I rent and have no idea where the shutoff might be or if that will only affect my unit. Is there any way to just plug up the faucet to keep the water from coming out? Like a rubber stopper or something the way you do for a drain? The sound is annoying and it's costing money having this water just drip away. It's also wasteful seeing that we are in drought conditions. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I tried to unscrew the Phillips screw that holds the knob on my bathtub faucet but all it does is turns, and it doesn't unscrew? Can you tell me how to get the knob off? I can put a new one on if I can get this old one-off. All it does is turn, it's tight but iy=t just turns without coming off? Please help. Thank You for any advice.
Thank you very much for this simple to do video. I was successful till removing outside castings till I reached to pull out cartridge. I saw in your video it was coming out so easy after pulling out. But in my case it is very hard to come out. I have been pulling out , up and down also moving in circular motion. Although it moving very little up and down. Is there any other solution I can pull out. Looks like previous instller used heavy silicon in it. Is there any detergent or any liquid can help. Please anybody can advise. Thanks
It's unfortunate if they used silicon to seal it in. That could end up causing problem. I'm sorry I don't know what to do in. your case, I hope you were able to figure it out.

My mom kept nagging me about fixing my leaking bath tub, I followed your video and got it done in less than 30 minutes! Thank you so much.

It seems to take more time to drive to and from the Hardware store than it does to make the repair.
Perfect video. Did everything just as he said and my leak was fixed with the new valve. Thank you!

Good recommendation! that strap wrench can save time. Most handles are not easy to get off.

@Kingdom Cre8tive It's always a good idea to shut off the main water in your house.
My strap wrench broke
This is a great video. The steps are so well explained and illustrated. I had a strap wrench in the kitchen for removing lids, and it worked beautifully on this job. Removing the old cartridge and pushing the new one back in were the hardest parts for me (74 yr old female), but with a little patience it worked just like in the video. Thank you very much for this great video!
I used a leather belt instead of a strap wrench lol
This is a very good video. I thought I needed seats and springs, but it looks like I need to replace the cartridge. Now I know!
Thank you so much! Good luck with the repair.
Great video, but you should add something about the two springs and gaskets behind the cartridge. Man your way seem much easier than the other videos
Excellent video, helped me out a ton
I needed the strap wrench and I had to use plyers to pull off the cartridge.
But I got it done and it seems to have worked.
That strap wrench is a really good idea, since these are so old it can really get stuck on there sometimes. Glad you got it all to work!
Great video. Question- Is turning the water off necessary or can I do this without completing that step! Thank you in advance
Thank you, yes, the water has to be turned off
Ok! Thank you
Thanks for this video.. Very helpful.

great step by step instructions. Does the cartridge have the product # written on it too? I hope to fix my drippy facet soon.

Best video out there:
Thank you!
great information
Video looks great. How do I find the code for cartridge or is RP19804 standard for most?
It was very clear and easy to follow
Really that’s it!? Lol I’m doing this tomorrow because the dripping sound is driving me nuts jajaja 😜

Very nice thanks

Yes there is a way to change the range. I have another video that shows that. ruclips.net/video/F7rnscQE_hg/видео.html
Very helpful, thanks for putting together.

Thank you so much!

Great info......I just changed mine today 1-19-21
That's great! Thank you :)

mine is a tub/shower combo, would that type be the cartridge type too?
I’m sorry I don’t check as often as I should just saw your question. You probably already found an answer. Usually, the cartridge number is on the cartridge itself.
Yeah, I just have channel locks. Turns the whole pipe. Gonna need a strap wrench on the one peice and something to hold onto the pipe. But if that whole pipe twists off, what happens? Broken?
Is a “strap wrench,” the same one as the one used to take off car oil filters?
I'm not sure. It's probably very similar.
It was really helpful. thanks :)
No problem glad it helped 🙂
Thank, you!
No problem 😊
is this the solution if there is water that leaks from the spigot when you pull up the diverter to taketake a shower? Thank you
No, this is for dripping water when the water is turned completely off at the shower.
We can't open the ring , we have the rubber strap but it is not working :(
Awesome! Thank you for sharing.
You bet!
