That's Jimmy singing the way the way Jimmy does. He's not copying Tina, they just have a similar style. This is a match made in heaven, so good together.
Tina's manager, Roger Davies, is an Australian. He helped restart her career after she left Ike. Guitarist is Diesel (Johnny Diesel/Mark Lizzotte) who is also Jimmy's brother-in-law.
And don’t forget The song was co-written by Aussie Mike Chapman with Holly Knight
This version was sung at the NRL grand final in 1993, so spot on with the date estimate. It was recorded in 1989 by Tina, and in 1992 with this duet pairing. And Tina’s original recording was used by the NSWRL for a promotional campaign in 1990.
I had to look up what those things were! 😆.
To hold your own with Tina Turner is an accomplishment!! He sure did that!
I’ve always liked that melody. ❤️
Yo, guitar player is Diesel, (Mark Lizotte) who does the harmonies and guitar solo with Barnsey and Farnsey singing When Something Is Wrong With My Baby. Diesel is also Barnes’ brother in law. He has the voice, guitar and amazing looks to have been a front man or solo star, but he also has crippling stage fright, so he gave that up quickly. Tina Turner was one of Barnes’ singing heroes when he was young. He saw her in concert as a child. He was blown away to be asked to duet with her, and I think you can see the enjoyment and respect they have for each others’ voices in this video. I really wish we had a whole album of them duetting together.
In 1992, Turner recorded "(Simply) The Best", a duet version of the song with Australian rock singer Jimmy Barnes, to promote that year's New South Wales Rugby League season in Australia the guy on guitar is Mark Denis Lizotte (Johnny Diesel) Jimmy's brother in law their wife's are sisters he is an American-born Australian singer-songwriter and musician Peace out.
Ahhh so it was an Australian production. 🙏
Yep am Aussie product for commercial rugby league promo. The guitarist in Johnny diesel.. he's no slouch either!
We basically adopted Tina as one of our own, an Aussie patron. Much respect.
When Queen Tina sadly passed, Jimmy was sharing a memory and he said of this song that he was so scared with so many nerves to sing with Tina .
He mentioned this to her and she said
“stand next to me honey and I’ll make you look good”
😂
Tina will always be in my opinion in the Top 3 female vocalists of all time.
(None better than the other just different sounds)
Agreed!
Jimmy said this was the first time he was ever nervous to perform. It wasn't the singing with Tina it was he was supposed to dance. He said I dance like an elephant tied to a tree. Tina said not to worry worry she would make him look good. And she did. RIP Tina
Funny story. ❤️
Jimmy’s not imitating Tina. The similarities in their voices were a commonly observed phenomenon here in Oz well before they got together for this recording.
I actually think her voice got a little darker/grittier to match his. If you listen to her solo version of the song, her voice sounds a little more 'pretty' if that makes sense?
@@MariaBM1 I’ve been meaning to listen to her original version… now I’ve got a reason thanks ☺️
@@andrewhall9175let me know what you think. I feel like she changed her voice. Jimmy may also have mirrored her a bit too. It would have been quite a show of mutual respect if that was the case. I know Jimmy was a Tina fan anyway! 😊
@@MariaBM1 i know when playing an instrument in a band, the best thing you can do is to just play to the sound you’re hearing. I guess that’d be what you’d do as a singer too. After listening to Tina solo, I feel that that’s what is happening between Tina and Jimmy. Sharing the duties the way they have has also left scope for both of them to do what the other can’t too IMO. I think I like the duet version slightly better.
@@andrewhall9175 I like the duet version better. 😊
Song was used for National Rugby League advertising promotion in Australia. There is a great ad with Tina singing the song amongst the Rugby League players.
Also another song worth mentioning as I don`t think anyone has is Jimmy Barnes - Soothe Me (with Sam Moore) - Official Video. Sam was 86 when they recorded this duet together last year. Cheers mate. 👍
Jimmy wanted to be a singer since he saw her perform as a kid. They paid a lot for this, he would have done this for free. He was awe struck.
The Queen may she RIP that was 🔥 I enjoyed rockin so much played it twice yo… What a flashback🫶
💯 ❤️
In 1992, Turner recorded "(Simply) The Best", a duet version of the song with Australian rock singer Jimmy Barnes, to promote that year's New South Wales Rugby League season in Australia. The single subsequently appeared on a limited edition bonus disc as part of the Australian release of her compilation album Simply the Best (1991)
Loved this.. you should also have a look at Jimmy barnes signing “good times” with Michael hutchence from another great Aussie band-INXS.. I loved INXS and when Jimmy sang with
Michael you could see the awe coming from Michael (Jimmy loved michael so much and was devastated when he died ). The live performance from INXS/Jimmy is great but also the music video was great as you could easily see the respect they held for each other..
I loved INXS too. I’ll try to remember to tell my inxs stories when I check that out! ❤️
@@michaelgoyettemusicoh I want to hear your INXS stories!
YO! Wow. That was great! I just heard him yesterday for the first time ever singing Stone Cold with Joe Bonamassa- also awesome! Love finding new-to-me artists. Pre-RENaissance, this was my jam- Bluesy/classic rock. I've expanded my range quite a bit in the past 2 years. Thank you for this reaction. 💛
Try the guys doing lazy, and jimmy doing soothe me with Sam Moore from Sam and Dave, very recently.
That's a masterclass!
❤️
Yo Toes Bo Mo! Jimmy and Tina sounded so great together. It was a remake for an ad campaign for NRL competition. The Guitarist is Diesel, American born Aussie, great musician and singer in his own right and just happens to be jimmys brother in law!
This version was only released in Australia and New Zealand I think. It's great though. It was massive and there was loads of rugby league promotion around it. 😄
Please check out a young jimmy Barnes singing a cover of “a change is gonna come” live in 1984
I looked it up…it has so little views…..but I’ll give it a go just the same.
@@michaelgoyettemusicthat video and his version of song is AMAZING. 😁
YO! Brother Mike. Great reaction as usual. The guitarist is Diesel (Mark Lizotte). He had his own band in the 80s called Johnny Diesel and the Injectors. Great rock band! He then went and became a part of Jimmy Barnes' band when Jimmy went solo after the first Cold Chisel break up. If you want to hear a great song you really should do "When Something is Wrong with my baby" bu Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham. Diesel plays the guitar in that and does BVs. You'll love it. Peace... ✌Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/AU_bCchDWF4/видео.html
I love seeing the joy on people’s faces when they watch Jimmy !
Johnny Diesel is quite the accomplished guitarist, and vocalist.
I remember seeing him perform at a small town festival in his hay day. It was rather impressive, a true frontman when he wants to be.
LOVE THIS RENDITION.
This is Jimmy Barnes pulling punches, holding back. Tina was a superstar no doubt, but you need to hear Jimmy in full swing
Remake (1992), but only a few years after Tina’s first version (1989 I think), which was only a year or two after Bonnie Tyler’s original.
The guitarist is Johnny Diesel, who is related to Jimmy by marriage, but who also had a successful career with The Injectors.
Awesome thanks!! I didn’t remember Bonnie Tyler version….maybe it didn’t chart here…
@@michaelgoyettemusic yeah I was surprised by that too - I actually thought the version with Jimmy was the original for most of my life.
Thanks mate for mentioning Diesel, I had a short 20 min break for lunch during a board meeting. So typed my stuff live and was going to come back to add that detail.
Being a rugby league tragic, this duo takes me back to the good old bad days of the NRL and my beloved Dragons.
This is much loved by many Aussies. Great to hear it again with you reacting. Who is that lead guitarist? Can’t remember his name…
Oh yeah a young Johnny Diesel. Thanks MG❤
Yes I’ve been told some of the back story by now. Johnny seems like a popular Aussie!! 🙏 ❤️
They did this together to be the official song to advertise Rugby league football in Australia
Jimmy is a massive, massive Tina fan. Kind of obvious from the video but he tells a story of sneaking in to see her in concert as a young bloke.
Diesel (aka Johnny Diesel aka Mark Lizotte) is top three Aussie guitarists for me, with Ian Moss and Dave Leslie
I could tell he was a fan but it’s cool he talks about it. I like all the Aussie guitarists I’ve heard so far! ❤️ 🙏
*cough* Tommy Emmanuel
@@peaked_aussie Tommy is not just on a different level but on another planet compared to every other guitarists
@@peaked_aussie he doesn’t get mentioned in the same way Bradman doesn’t get mentioned. However, all three I mentioned will get cranked in my car. Tommy will not.
@@kane29842 Fair enough. I love Tommy not just for his brilliance but because he is such a genuinely nice person who is a fantastic ambassador for Aus. But each to his own.
Time to go down the jimmy Barnes rabbit hole 😊 btw i love your hat
Aussie Music my friend !!!
Was a massive hit when it came out with the two of them.
I could see that. :)
@@michaelgoyettemusic If you can, try to find the ads for the NSW rugby league featuring that song. Some tough Aussie boys back then.
7:19 Yo! Fellow Canuck living in the Land Down Under! This was a duet created for the NRL in N.S.W. Such a powerhouse song here in OZ with these two legends and of course, the incredible Diesel with the greatest voice as well!
I was with the Brisbane Bullets 10 piece band at the NBL here in Queensland, and sang that song....'Simply The Best' ...but they canned it because it was a Footy Song!! Still this version with Barnesy & Tina Turner rocks!! Loved seeing it again!! Cheers! 😊
Yo eh?!
🍻
It simply is the best.
Brisbane Bullets? Football team?
@@michaelgoyettemusic NBL Basketball at Boondall Entertainment Centre, Brisbane! :)) We played all the home games which they played with interstate teams, mainly from Sydney and Melbourne! Thanks Mike! Check out John Farnham with Jimmy Barnes & Diesel singing 'When Something is Wrong with my Baby'!
Pretty sure this is jimmy's song cover but he got tina to feature on it. this version is pretty much the default here in Australia, so much so that everytime I hear the original I always wait to jimmy's intro and I forget that this is Tina's song lol.
Jimmy Barnes also sang this solo at a Grand Final NRL check it out.
Yo, you gotta listen to every note Tina ever sang. What a thrill for any musician to perform with her.
💯
I get what you said about Jimmy sounding like Tina!
Someone may know this better but apparently Jimmy and Diesel flew over to England to record this with Tina. They were still jet lagged when they made this. Apparently, also some of Tina's female friends were at the studio and were very happy to see Diesel playing the guitar. 🤣😍
I hope it’s true! 😆
Yo. Loved it.
Yo😊…another comment ….. I am not sure if you remember that Tina Turner was in the movie Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome. It was shot in Australia in a town called Coober Pedy. Other scenes were filmed near Sydney. That was around 1983…..so even before the football league got her to come to Oz and promote them and sing at the final I believe (NRL which stands for National Rugby League, but don’t quote me on that as I don’t follow this code. I am into AFL fan, otherwise know as Australian Football league). She starred alongside Mel Gibson and Gary Steven Anderson who is known as Angry Anderson, the lead singer of a band called Rose Tattoo. He played Ironbar Bassey in that film. That band is from the 70’s too…. Ahh there were some great bands here in those days. Bad boys for Love is a song from this band. One of his biggest hits was Suddenly, and this one is a ballad, which is left of centre, as Rose Tattoo were are rock band.
Jimmy said in recent interview the NRL National Rugby League in Australia totally financed this collaboration . Jimmy said he would’ve done it for free because he was a massive Tina Turner fan .
Tina had Australian management so she would spend a lot time in Australia that time lead to many career paths for Tina .
First in 1984 Tina covered John Farnham’s epic rearrangement of the Beatles classic Help .
Tina scored her role in the 3rd Mad Max Beyond ThunderDome this movie made in Australia and lead to her hit song We Don’t Need Another Hero .
The late 80’s in the early 90s NRL used Tina Turner and few of hit as marketing campaign , which was successful.
Simply The Best is originally a Bonnie Tyler song Tina Turner covered it 1989 to become a massive hit .
Nobody can imitate Tina or Jimmy. The guitar 🎸 player is Johhny Diesel (stage name). HE IS Jimmy's brother inlaw and a legend in his own right.
Facts. ❤️
OMG, his name is Mark Lizotte. And I bet he is sick of being known as Jimmy Barnes brother-in-law.
@wren1960 I agree, notice is put stage name in case he wanted to check him out.
@bella-xp7qd Fair enough, he's definitely worth checking out it. Cheers
Diesel is the guitar player. Jimmy’s brother in law. Tina was in Australia filming Mad Max. Jimmy told his manager he would love to record with her. Her manager was also Joe Cockers too. Jimmy had recorded with him. So they got in touch and magic was made. Jimmy isn’t trying to match Tina. He sings his way as the song should be sung. Tina and Jimmy together is a perfect vocal match. 🇨🇦
The lead guitarist is Johnny Diesel, he’s Jimmy’s brother in law , most stuff that you see with Jimmy, you will see Diesel, a great artist in his own right , yo 😂❤
Jimmy was terrified before the filming/recording of this. He'd been a fan of Tina and was scared lol. They spent 2 days singing, sitting on the floor and eating Thai food and he had a blast. Mark (Diesel) on the guitar is Jimmy's bro in law
No doubt!! You’d have to be Elvis to not be intimidated by her!! ❤️
The guitarist in this clip is another great Australian artist, Johnny Diesel(Jimmy's brother-in-law). Jimmy does a great soul/r&b duet with John Farnham, another iconic Australian artist; singing there version of a Sam and Dave song, When Something is Wrong With My Baby live from Jimmy's Soul Deep concert.
Tina Turner and Australia have been very close love for decades.... like almost every finale of every aussie wedding reception, school dance, community fete (festival) and playground exercise does the "Nutbush City Limits" line dance as the aussie's compulsory macarena since the 80s ongoing to present (for some odd reason uniquely Australian to know and do from child to adult, and no where else in the world not even America).... and she is chosen by the aussies to be the face of Australia’s rugby league and chose her song "simply the best" as the rugby league theme.... her manager is australian (roger davies) since from the late 70s.... she is also Aunty Entity (Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome) with Mel Gibson who consider himself more Australian... her CDs, concerts and fan base are very high in Australia specially among the middle age women population.... she always said of aussies love for her and her special love for Australia....
hi there Michael..great video. love your vibe. i would highly recommend that you watch John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes song called When Something Is Wrong With My Baby which also features Johnny Diesel..also..John Farnham is another Aussie legend (adopted from England) who is very famous and well respected/loved, he has some great hits including- Your The Voice, Beatles cover of Help and Burn for You..keep up the great work and take care..best wishes and kind thoughts from Australia..
Hi. I’m currently trying to get a John Farnham reaction unblocked. Hopefully I’ll be able to release it.
YO! They were great together.
Fact
It was dope. I was senior year at high school. She did promo for the footy. Diesel is a legend guitarist and singer too.
It actually had more to do with Tina who was brought to Australia to boost the image of the National Rugby League which was struggling at the time
I see.
The guitarist for this song was done by diesel
His guitar player is his brother in law Johnny Rotten ❤
Yo. With regards to Tina dancing in this video, Jimmy said she wanted Jimmy to dance too and Jimmy responded with words to the effect “Have you seen me dance? I don’t dance” and Tina generously responded, “Don’t worry, darling. I’ll make you look good.”
He said making this song, this video was one of the biggest highlights of his career. When he was a teenager, he had snuck in through the back door to an Ike and Tina Turner concert in Australia. He stood centre stage in absolute awe and has respected and adored her ever since.
This recording, I prefer her voice, like a fine wine. I’ve always believed Tina and Jimmy are the male and female contemporary of each other. He’s probably sung this song hundreds of times as a fan before this recording so has some little similarities to her. They both give it their all respectfully knowing they match. The guitarist is Diesel an amazing guitarist and beautiful singer who happens to be Jimmy’s brother in law. Yo Down
Yeah it would be hard to not imitate the original singer just a little. I agree with you about everything! 😊
@@michaelgoyettemusic you agree with me about everything? Bloody hell, never in my life have I heard a man say that 😂
As a fan imagine recording with TINA! Jimmy has some cahonna’s to belt on that track. You might notice if you watch Jimmy doing duets he only belts if the other person can SING, when he duets with a person not of his caliber he pares it back, so that’s how you know if Jimmy thinks you can sing if he belts on stage with you. Cheers
@@hollygranger3734 keep a record of it…..no one will believe you!! 😂
@@michaelgoyettemusic 🤣
The NRL also used What You Get Is What You see in another ad the year before. This is the better ad IMO
Lol 😂to us Aussies she sounds like Jimmy!!!! I 😂😂😂 None other than Diesel on the guitar 🎸 😂
Perspective!! 😂 ❤️
Tina has duoed on this song with several people. If you want to hear the power of Jimmy Barnes check out his work with Joe Bonamassa ruclips.net/video/IyXFHr5jylI/видео.html He is a blues legend everywhere except for the US for some reason.
I like the track with Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain, I think it’s Going Down.
What track with journey guys? With Jimmy?
@@michaelgoyettemusic sorry, yes, with Barnes, it’s called Going Down Again.
@@michaelgoyettemusicThe track which I also really like, @Jihavoh777 was talking about is “Going Down Alone” featuring Neal Schon & Jonathan Cain from the band Journey and Joe Bonamassa with Jimmy’s son Jackie on drums.
The NRL used Tina's songs (What you get is what you see & Simply the Best) for their NRL (Rugby League) promotions. Tina helped put bums back on seats at the football games. She performed at the grand finals etc. The Tina Turner NRL ad's are legendary! Tina loved watching the guys play too, there are plenty of interviews where she talks about it! Jimmy collaborated with her for one of these ads. Jimmy is not copying/imitating Tina, this is how he sings!
Yo Mike. The guitarist is Mark Lizotte aka Johnny Diesel or Diesel. He is also the brother in law of Jimmy Barnes.
Imitating no way. That’s pure Jimmy.
Their clothes are a reverse mirror image of the other.
They flew him to her, to make this for thae national football promotion.
This was a special duet version they did in Australia. He is not imitating her at all. That is how he sounds.
I’ve heard him sing on other stuff and he is opening up his pharyngeal resonator a little more than usual…..it isn’t an insult. It’s natural to pick up on a characteristic tone of the original singer when you’re covering a song….unless you do it in a completely different register like he did on Wild Thing.
Yo
Was tied to football sponsorship from memory.
Rugby according to future you. :)
Rugby league - the NRL equivalent made it happen, and they performed it together at the 1993 grand final.
Australian Mike Chapman wrote a number of songs for Tina. She hated them all, but they bought her great financial and musical success. Chapman is the most unrecognised, underrated person in Australian music history. A shame on our music industry for neglecting a giant of music.
