I was at that 86 gig at MK Bowl. One of the best gigs I’ve ever been to. Still got the scars from it. The whole place went off big time when they opened with Waterfront.
All about the light show. Truly gutted at what has happened to this once legendary band!! Awful keyboard player! An acoustic guitarist that isn't needed and Jim giving some songs to a backing singer!! The drummer is good but lacks the thunderous presence of Mel Gaynor. Simple Minds for me have lost their soul and maybe it's time for Jim and Charlie to either swallow their prides and get some of the past members back or take up gardening.
they never replaced DF he was a vital member of the group along with Mick and Mel sad !! would people go to see U2 with just the edge and Bono and session musicians !!
Totally agree, it's bobbins. I won't go and see them live anymore as it's mostly session musicians and feels soulless. Last great tour was 5 x 5 but this is a world away from that.
Is this comment even serious?? There are few enough great live bands and this is one of them..I preffered the original lineup but people left.. they do put on a brilliant show
@@justinoshaughnessy1663 yes the comment is completely serious. We're all entitled to our opinions. I've spent thousands over 30 odd years following that band so I'm pretty sure I'm entitled to it!
Where has his voice gone? Because he is sounding very good to me. I suppose it is very easy to sit behind a computer screen, listening to the sound quality of a mobile phone, and criticise.
This is pure cabaret. I fear just because John Giddings has done an amazing job promoting the band and getting them back to Arena status, that Jim thinks it's because of him and his session musicians. It's all John Giddings work. He got them back together and gave them prime slits in his festival Isle Of Wight etc. Mel was in the band during that rebranding period and worked his backside off bringing credibility back into the band with the 5x5 tours and the Graffiti Soul album etc. The departure of Mel was the last straw for me. Mel has been used as a punching bag for Kerr for many years, only brought to the fore when the band needed credibility or even "just to make up the numbers" in photoshoots when it looked like a bunch o hired hands. I have it on good authority that Mel was not offered the kind of renumeration that one might expect from a team player since 1982. It's absolutely sickening. And by the way, the production for this show is so old fashioned it's like going to a Cliff Richard show. It's laughable.
The only thing "laughable" is your comment... Mel or no Mel, they are still a great band. And as for John Giddings, being active in getting them back in arenas, how can he be responsible? Just because they happened to play the Isle of Wight festival in 2009. And he is the promoter of that festival. Some so called fans really like to moan, when their favourite member, leaves a band. No disrespect to Mel, but he was only their drummer, and didn't really bring any credibility to the band. Sure I miss Mel, but Cherisse is doing a great job, and if I didn't know Mel had left. I would think he was still drumming, she is such a hard hitter.
@@goldsaj The promoter acts as a bank. They pay all the costs, fees, staff and the promotion of a show. No promoter, no band. That's why SM were virtually over by 2000. No promoter would touch them because they had been losing money since around 1993. When Giddings pit his money on the table, Universal put their money on the table. At that point Kerr had one more chance to make good on his promise to deliver a good album, that album was "Graffiti Soul" and it intentionally mimicked the OUAT heyday, of which Iovine turned Gaynor's drums up in the mix, that was emulated on GS. Look, if you like the current set up, fair play to you. I am going to say this, it's cabaret, it's lazy, it's safe. That's coming from someone who's followed em since 1983.
@Andy Dougan Andy, I appreciate that their are a few more factors involved - the band have made a few attempts to try and "reset" their career. It's always about the promoter and the record label, otherwise it won't work on the scale that SM are currently at. My disappointment lies in the fact that the material post Graffiti Soul is pedestrian, lackluster and devoid of inspiration. It's not SM. It's Jim, Charlie and a few producers and it's a missed opportunity for the band to make their mark finally after so many dud albums - the band have not released a concise album since SFY. Where is Mel Gaynor? That man lifted the band to serious heights and his drums are integral to their best albums, NGD, SITR, OUAT... Those albums are pure joy and Mel's right there in the mix with his signature sound influence. Look, it's hard I know .. the last 2 U2 albums are woeful .. again bono and edge and a mountain of producers. Painful stuff. At least Larry is still there live, at least some heart is left in U2. For SM, it seems cold, calculated and mean spirited to ditch Mel, again, for the Third time.
