I saw them on that tour too! MASSIVE kudos to them, because they played an outdoor show when it was literally >115 F degrees with awful humidity, AND Will was recovering from food poisoning, and they still absolutely killed it

Went to a show from the same tour. Lorna Shore is a little further down the extreme tech death genre spectrum than I usually like but they had a great set and I was impressed. I enjoyed it. I still don't listen to their music in my free time, but they're great musicians.

Same. I almost didn't go until I heard Lorna Shore was opening since I'd been listening them for a few months but knew very little about Gojira and Mastadon. I had high expectations of LS and they exceeded every one of them! I honestly felt like they sounded even better live. Mastadon was great and Gojira hit me like a freight train.

I can hear tons of opportunities for some opera in some of their songs.
I think most times metal bands use keyboards, it can be switched out for some operatic sounds or singing…or at least added.

Throwback to where the friendship began! Love to see it! I watched this the very day it came out because I was already a huge supporter of Will. It's awesome to revisit this story of how he was awestruck by the command a vocalist could have over their audience and how he wanted to create that same impact. He's gone far above that now - achieving and exceeding that dream. So many of us are in literal tears at his shows, I've never been so overwhelmed with feeling by a vocalist as I am when this man sings. Will is an inspiration, not only for his incredible vocal skill with those insane harsh beauties and the captivating cleans, but also in the way he treats people with sincere kindness. He truly is deserving of all the praise. And if you haven't heard him sing live you are missing out on the best experience of your life! Go see Lorna Shore next time they tour!!

It's interesting that Will talks about seeing an opera singer/vocal coach to help improve his techniques, because years ago I saw a story on the Australian version of 60 Minutes about a vocal coach who was teaching metal singers how to scream safely without doing damage to their precious instrument... I can't for the life of me remember who she was,,,ugggghhhh!! if I find out, I'll come back and edit it in...😏
    🙃🐨🇦🇺
Edit: ok, I just looked up the lady, her name was Elizabeth Sabine. She was born in 1923 in London, she grew up in Australia and moved to Los Angeles in 1974. Became friends with Robert Mazzarella, opera tenor and singing coach. At the end of the 70s discovered her ability to refine vocal techniques for hard rock and heavy metal vocalists. She facilitated faster mastery of skills compared to other methods. In 1981 Lee Strasberg got Sabine in to work with his acting and singing students to help strengthen their voices. Over the years she worked with people like Axl Rose - Guns - N - Roses, Dave Mustaine - Megadeth, B-Real, Ron Keel - Keel, Colin Hay - Men At Work, to name but a few. In 2003 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the L.A. Music Awards. Elizabeth Sabine was affectionately known as "Heavy Metal Grandma". She passed away at the age of 93 in LA.

But my kid just turned 18 and and I thought it was time to let him go to the show with his buddies alone so that they could do their thing. I’m no longer pit worthy at my age anyways. All I can do is hang out in the back and head bang like it’s 1984😂. They had a great time and said it was incredible. I did take him and his buddies to the next show which was Periphery. Killer show. 🤘🏻. But at my age, I’m an every other show kind of guy now😅. I’m ancient. I remember going to see Metallica in small clubs when Lars was trying to sell T-shirts. Yeah, I’m old AF. 😂 . There’s also some great footage of her playing piano and guitar and singing on youtube. She was part of the British Folk Revival. Sadly she passed away too young and her death was overshadowed by Janis Joplin’s death. Anyway, her album “Sandy” is amazing. I feel like screaming (well, at least false cord screaming), whistle notes and Tuvan throat singing are similar enough that if one can successfully learn one of those vocal techniques, they can also learn the other. At least someone might be able to do it fairly good.

My boi Will shouting out Beyond Creation too. Such a cool dynamic between Elizabeth and Will. Will is 100% right though get vocal lessons if you wanna sing clean/harsh whatever floats your boat coz sometimes it can take an outside perspective of someone who's been doing singing for a long time to understand what you're doing wrong and help you improve on it. Giving up on something you're passionate about because you don't wanna seek outside help means you probably aren't really passionate about it to begin with.

Disco era Bee Gees is a good example of falsetto screaming at high pitch in tone etc. Not the whistle register, but still something to draw inspiration from. Barry Gibb literally described his singing technique "I found that not only could I scream in tune, I could sing a whole song in falsetto." Would also make a great reacts video. It’s funny hearing about how it’s beneficial to put your foot on something when you’re singing because I was told by one of my lecturers who does live sound all the time that he hates that singers always put their foot up on the wedge monitors because they always move them out of position 😂
He said it was just to look cool on stage but it’s interesting that there’s actually a reason why singers do it whether they realise it or not

I felt compelled to say that (as it's displayed for me) my thumbs up made it say 100 up and zero down. So after the video, the current count is 131 up & 0 down!
