  • Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the condition of Osgood Schlatter disease.
An apophysis is found where major tendons and ligaments attach to bone. The tibial tubercle is an apophysis and is an insertion for the patellar tendon. The tibial tubercle apophysis is a secondary ossification center. It is not part of the knee joint and it is subjected to traction stress.
Tibial tubercle ossification: below 11 years of age, the tibial tubercle is cartilaginous. Between 11-14 years of age, the apophysis is formed. Between 14-18 years of age the apophysis fuses with the tibial epiphysis. More that 18 years of age, the epiphysis and apophysis fuse with the rest of the tibia.
Osgood Schlatter disease is a traction apophysitis of the tibial tubercle resulting from repetitive microtrauma. It is an overuse syndrome that results in inflammation of the insertion of the patellar tendon on the tibial tubercle. Osgood Schlatter disease is more common in boys between the age of 12-15 years. The condition is less common in girls and it occurs between the ages of 8-12 years in girls. It is bilateral in about 20% of the cases.
Risk factors: sports aggravate the condition like in jumpers, soccer and sprinters.
Presentation: pain, swelling and tenderness localized over the tubercle on the anterior aspect of the knee. Tibial tubercle may appear enlarged. The pain is increased with physical activity and sports. If unilateral, rule out infection, trauma, tumor and check lateral x-ray for fragmentation and irregularity of the tibial tubercle.
Prognosis: it is a self-limiting diseases. It occurs with increased demand on the immature skeleton. It is resolved when the patient stops growing.
Treatment: reduction of activity until it heals. Short period of limited activity may be sufficient. Knee Immobilizer, physiotherapy, hamstring stretching. Do not inject or use steroids. It may cause fatty necrosis and disfigurement of the skin. The condition may become chronic and cause residual pain, swelling and joint tenderness. X-ray. Separate the ossicle over the tubercle (operation of the painful ossicle may be needed)

Bullshit out can still do any kinds of sport, I've had it since I was 11 and I'm 18 now. I'm supposed to get surgery next year once the bone fully attaches and this hasn't stop me from doing any type of sport. I'm one of those stubborn kids who don't like taking care of my knee so if you can take care of yours your performance would be better I suppose... but anyways the pain doesn't go away nor it heals when you de the stretches but it will reduce the pain and I find it better when I massage the bump. So don't worry and keep training just wear a knee sleeve and stretch before you run.

All I have to say for all of you is stay strong and don't let this get you down like it has me. It may have some physical limitations but anything is possible if you put your mind to it. It will get better like everything does but you may have to wait a while. I have 5 years till its gone and its going to be a hell of a ride. My point is don't let this depress you in any way and there's treatments. I'm just praying that its not chronic because if it is... As someone with this who loves sports, when this truly began I felt like my life was ending. The pain I felt was the worst pain I've ever felt. Getting up the stairs was 10× harder then it needed to be. Running, walking, and doing things I love were much harder and much more painful. This started 3 years ago and I'm still going through it. You forgot the most important treatment: CORRECT quadriceps stretching to reduce tension on the tibial insertion. Incorrect stretching (pulling heel to bum) is harmful to the knee joint. Icing after activity and slow, proper warm up and cool down is essential to reduce swelling, pain and worsening of the condition.

    • @treefitty937

You just saved me. Started doing those quad stretches pretty hardore for a bit.. now I know that's what was causing it. I read all the comment about people saiyng they've had it forever. Maybe because they continued to stretch their quads like that. I just got over another knee injury and I was just about done with everything. Thanks hopefully it was that and yeah hopefully its not too late to stop. Thx

Developed this in both knees aged 12. Right knee gradually got better with time. Left knee got worse and worse. Doctors sent me for physio therapy. Taping of the knee. Home exercises. Bandages and supports. Nothing worked. They refused to operate here in the uk until i was 21 as the bones are fully grown by then. Waited the 9 years, had some bone removed and hey presto, fully cured. 28 now and tho my knees are still bumpy looking, they are not painful and I am still very active. Also they gave me opiates for pain relief after the surgery which was fucking sweet. lol

this definitely does not resolve once you are done growing.. It becomes painful as a an adult once you start doing dynamic and plyometric activity like jumping, kicking(kickboxing) etc. As an adult with this I would refrain from a lot of plyometric activities, keep your surrounding musculature in good flexibility and Ktape it if necessary. its just about managing this for the rest of your life if you do have it.

Never got any treatment, because my doctor said it would be fade with time and disappear 'till I'm 21, but that I should only do gym exercises or swimming (but I couldn't swim, 'cause I got my nose and throat operated)... Fortunately my condition never got worse, despite the pain when the weather is wet, too cold or too hot (I'm like an old lady)...
Now I'm 19 and I'm sad (and with a really bad pain) to say that due hormonal diseases I gained a lot of weight in the past 2years, witch caused a lot of strain for my knees and the healing process will last much more years before it's cured...

I could tap the knot with my finger and so much pain would come from that. After I got my leg to fully bend again I got but and I was one of the track runners at my school/ long jump. Yes I still felt pain quit often. Now I and 36 and I feel a pinching pain in my joint when I walk up the stairs. I am looking to have surgery here in a few months. I had a very angry life. When I was younger, about 11 or 12, I got so pissed about everything in my life at the time that I ran away from home. I kept running and walking and I reached about a mile and a half down the road when I finally returned to my senses because it was getting dark and fast. I live out in the country, so if a hungery animal wanted a 12 year old boy to eat it would take it. So I started running back home, pocket knife in hand to defend myself. I was almost half way home and thats when I felt a loud SNAP and it was my left knee. It didn't hurt because I was so hyped on adrenaline. I kept walking because I could tell something was wrong with my knee. After that, a few minutes later, I cut myself with my pocket knife and blood was running all over my hand. I got home, and a few days later we went to the doctors to find out what was wrong with my left knee, and it turned out to be the Osgood - Schlatter Disease.

It took possibly 3 days of trying with 15 mins each time. Sorry if I seem insincere. I also may have forgot to mention is that I believe I likely have extended (straightened, not bent) my leg in order to do the knocking of the protruded lump.

_Mad Chris_ you might need to get surgery, you should talk to your doctor, I would recommend icing them 3 time a day and do thigh and hamstring stretches

Icing helps a lot, and copper-zinc infused kinetic tape in an X shape right over the bump

this is the worst thing to have if you are a ball player,It really slows you down and prevents you from jumping really high, plus if it were to get hit in the middle of the game it takes time to heal so you gotta sit it out instead of playing

Was on my trampoline and i jumped and it felt like something pulled apart in my knee. That was last year when i was 14. It only hurt for 3 or 4 months. Now im 15 and i can run just fine but when i hit my knee on something it hurts like a mother. im scared to jump again. Hopefully this will clear up when I stop growing and ill be back in shape.

Hey guys I know how to stop most of the pain when you run only do this when your walking a lot or running. Just get any wrapping material and below the bump wrap it on like the bottom half of the bump and below it too, it takes off the pressure
