Many, many years ago a male friend said exactly the same thing to me. He's straight, and he didn't know that I'm gay, and that I would remember those words forever. I was 23 and now I am 70.
Wow. Thank you for sharing. This is why we made this film. Moments like this with our first crushes truly change you forever. More to come with Gus and Bridger. We promise to do justice for all our queer family who has been through moments like this.
That also happened to me. He knew I was gay. Although nothing ever came of it. Our bond is very strong then and now. Love is a funny thing; it comes in so many forms.
@ Wonderful. I know where he is now, but we have never met after, but he says until now that I am his male love, but kind of joke. He is married, with children, and his family is a very happy one.
I'm 68 now but back in the late 70s when in my early 20s I was in college and attending a really consevrative church but had a crush on this fellow the same age as me with beautiul golden hair, a muscular build and fantiastic singing voice. We were both in choir practice and he chose to stand by me and turned to me and said, "man, you're so pretty, if you were a girl, I'd marry you." As unexpected as this was I smiled at him and melted a little. Nothing could ever come to it though with the church and all and I told myself that I had dreamed it. I played guitar while he sang with his big well-trained voice for special church occasions until I moved away. I've pondered this for all these years.
I fed the above paragraph into and AI app and it rendered this lovely story: The choir room hummed with the low, resonant voices of the singers, warming up for evening service. Ethan, with his golden hair catching the late afternoon light, stood beside me, his presence a comforting anchor amidst the sea of voices. He turned, his blue eyes sparkling, and a mischievous grin spread across his face. "Man, you're so pretty," he said, his voice a low rumble, "If you were a girl, I'd marry you." My heart leaped into my throat. The air in the choir room seemed to thin, and the other voices faded into a distant murmur. I stammered, unsure how to respond. He chuckled, a deep, melodious sound that sent shivers down my spine. "Don't worry," he said, his grin widening, "Just teasing." But it wasn't just teasing. I knew it then, and I know it now. There was a genuine warmth in his eyes, a longing that mirrored my own. Yet, the weight of societal expectations and the rigid doctrines of our church pressed down on us. We continued to sing together, our voices blending in perfect harmony. Ethan, with his powerful tenor, and I, accompanying him on guitar, became a familiar sight at church services. But the unspoken understanding between us remained just that - unspoken. A secret shared only in the fleeting glances, the lingering touches, the way his eyes always seemed to seek mine. Then, life intervened. I moved away for college, leaving behind the choir room, the church, and the boy with the golden hair and the voice of an angel. The memory of his words, however, remained, a bittersweet echo of a love that could never be. Years turned into decades, and the memory faded, softened by the passage of time. But sometimes, late at night, I would hear a familiar melody, a voice that eerily resembled Ethan's, and the old ache would return. The ache of a love lost, a life unlived, and a secret carried to the grave. This story attempts to capture the essence of your memory, focusing on the emotional impact of Ethan's unexpected confession and the enduring power of unspoken emotions.

@@matthewfrancisj I have a question for you: How do you guys manage to make it look so like the early 2000s when you are filming in 2025 ?? I genuinely thought this clip was 20 years-ish old.
@@matthewfrancisj I'm looking forward for what's to come. Can't believe you responded as well. Such a realistic and wholesome portrayal of love and friendship. Even though I'm a queer black guy, I identify with this. I too have fallen in love with a skater. I love that movies transcend so many things and you can relate to things in so many different ways.
Please, we need at least part two. The whole plot, the imagery, lights, the cinematography, the actings, those beautiful subtle emotions in their eyes were just amazing. It is a gorgeous piece of art, that's all I can say.

And the last scene. It left me in tears remembering my own gay summer americana coming of age meet cutes. This is the best gay short i’ve seen in a long time. It could hold up as a full length film with ease. I need more of this, and more of this story asap.

I may be the minority here, but I don't want more. I can close my eyes and feel this movie, every smirk, laugh, stare. You have more than a short movie here. This is one I wont need to re-watch, I can close my eyes and feel it from one viewing. I was in a place today when I came across this---one of those places when you sitting in a room yet hear no sound, have no vision. This movie opened my senses from the inside, and I once again found my place. Thank you!
Wow! What a touching comment! Thank you! We do plan on sharing more with our novel and feature film! But yes! We wanted our short film to end how it did and remain this singular magical work of art that could be thought-provoking and gratifying for the soul for anyone who watched it. ❤
This was really wonderful! So well written, acted, shot, edited -- everyone involved in this production should be so proud of what you've created! I wish I'd had a moment like that growing up... and I'm so happy for the kids today who are much more likely to have that.
Thank you! So many of us don't get romance like this as queer teens. which is why we know it had to be shared. Thank you for watching more to come with our Novel and Feature Film!
This film, hands down, is one of the best shorts I have had the pleasure of watching. From the writing to the production quality to the acting, A+. The message of the film comes across loud and clear without being cryptic or cliche. The ending (yes THIS short has an actual ending) was pure class. An all around great film that proves heartbreak and happiness can and do coexist.

A brilliantly crafted piece that conveys the essence of uncertainty in a very delicate way. Well written and beautifully acted by all involved. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the story unfold. I’m a gay English guy in West London who was illegal in the 1950s and life was difficult then, but your portrayal shows that it is still so in the 21st century.

I wish, I hope, oh no he wants a girl, back off, don't embarrass yourself..." ...been there done that....what an excellent choice of story lines...extremely well done...the acting was believable, honest and genuine.....I so look forward to the full length film....thank you so much...I loved it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The first time I heard the lyrics “I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her,” from the song ‘Dancing On My Own’ by Robyn I broke down in tears. I believe MANY of us have had this same exact experience. It’s a particular kind of heartbreak that stings so badly.
Good Grief was that ever wonderful. I'm 53 years old and dont get overly emotional watching tv or movies but that ending...That was art. Just wonderful. 😊
Thank you! We aimed for the best ending that felt honest and true. We also felt this story so deeply so we wanted to make sure we put our whole soul into it!
Matthew, this is excellent!! I look forward to seeing the feature film and will pick up the novel soon. I loved the cinematography and direction of this short, you guys did a great job. I have been (since 2003) working on a novel as well, and hope to finally get it finished by the end of 2026. (Had some setbacks with my health and other things since I'd started, but recently got back to it. ) I wish you guys all the best on the feature film!
I did not feel I was watching a short film. I felt I was watching my emotions and things in my head well played out as words beautifully and honestly played out by these characters. Thank you for this!
This was so beautiful. Shows a simple life when connections and relationships would develop organically. Exploration was fun and emotional. Life prior to social media was so different. Thank you for such an amazing film. I felt the love and passion put into this work of art. Bravo. 🎉🎉
Thank you for your kind words! With so much internet and media addiction these days, our young team wanted to explore what gay love was like for teens back before it all. When you had to connect, take risks, and make mistakes all in person. We put our hearts into each piece of this project. More to come!
On reflection of my own coming out and discovering myself during the early 90's, this feels like an accurate depiction of the time, though it could easily be from many time periods. Capturing the unspoken emotions so well, this movie will resonate with many young people discovering themselves. The pace allows for the connection to real life to manifest. I hope the rest of the movie pays attention to this detail. Very excited to see the full feature. ❤🌈🛹
So happy to see this released. It definitely captures the small town '90s vibe. Nice cinematography and characters that feel real. The little 'testing the waters' moments are quite genuine in their delivery. Hoping you are able to make a feature length version of the story. If the quality is at this level, then I am certain it will also be quite beautiful.

Wow, I'm so glad I stumbled onto this. And on opening night! Well done. Great writing and great acting. I appreciate that in that moment where Bridger is brave enough to be honest about his feelings, Gus realizes that he is worthy of being loved. That can go a long way. This story touched me, because thirty years ago, after an intense friendship that ramped up really quickly like this one, my best friend told me that he wished I was a girl so we could be together. I loved that boy so much, in ways nobody else ever had, that he wanted desperately to give it back. But his body didn't. He could not reconcile the feelings between us, and that scared him. He joined the military, and the day he left was our "break up." The gay guy pining over a straight guy is a tale as old as time. Yes, I hurt for a while, but ultimately I recovered. I've been with my husband for 20 years now and we are so tight that the rest of the world just kind of exists around us. We are meant for each other. Every day with him is absolutely fucking brilliant. My friend though, he did not fare so well. He's been married three times, always to combative women who don't really show love. He's battled meth addiction that led to being discharged from the military. He's heavily used steroids for bodybuilding that deformed his body. He has three sons; a toddler, one he sees twice a year, and another who he refuses to see because the mother is a lesbian. When he became ultra-conservative and anti-gay, I removed him from all my social media. The last thing I remember about him is how in his photos, his face has just become sort of sour all the time, like being alive is terrible. For him, it must be. I still wonder whether I taught him real love or I just ruined him.
I love this. Honestly. There are those who might want to know what happens next, but this story is good enough to stand on its own, in exactly the way it's presented.
Thank you! We knew this short film had to end like this at this length to be it's own beginning middle and end that was impactful. So this can stand alone. but we do have More to come! Our Novel and Feature film will soon tell the full story!
Thank you for your patience! So much more is coming! Gus and Bridger's story continues in our Scraps novel! amzn.to/4hgigjT. Pre-order it now to see what happens with the rest of their summer. We also aim to shoot our feature film this June/July back in Montana!
Such a beautiful film. You guys got some really great moments in here and some really wonderful shots. I loved the morning kitchen shot with his uncle. Although I was kind of unclear where the light was coming from, I thought it was an outside yard light...but still beautiful to look at. Your cinematographer must have been beside himself when he saw that through the lens. It has a lot of meaning and it says something about the main character finding something within himself at it was right outside the comfort of his house. Am I reading too much into this? Probably, maybe it's just a nice shot.... but the meaning might be there anyway. I also loved the campfire scene at the end. What is it about campfires? It reminded me of a conversation I had with a dear friend who is no longer with us. You captured a very intimate moment with some great cuts and sensitive direction and performance. Congrats, kids, I think you have a movie....and a good one to boot! Do more!!!!

First of all congrats for creating this incredible piece of art. Not only is it super beautifully shot (and from what I’ve read in the comments about 100% accurate considering the time it played) but also the story is so well written. And I need that book. I have read every single comment under this (which I usually really don’t do, also took me some time as there are 677 at the moment 😅) and I was stunned by the variety of people y’all have brought together. There are stories of (in my young eyes) old people and their moving and very personal stories they felt like they could share here. I am very grateful this exists and y’all have created this special space. Having all that said, there’s one question left. Why is Bridger wearing that shirt saying “Deutschland”. Am I the only one watching this from Germany? Have a good one and continue what you’re doing ❤
Awwww! Thank you for this comment! Our goal was to tell our niche story and make it feel real enough to be universal for everyone, of any age or nation. And that red Deutchland shirt was a random find from our Costume Designer Fiona Story. She just loved that red we needed for the diner scene’s color palate! BUT now we’ll say we found it for you! I love Germany. I went this past summer. Much love! We’re excited for your thoughts on the novel! ❤️🤓
Thanks! This was really wonderful. I grew up in a time that put me in simlar situations, and it was wonderful when you would have those interactions. Great memories!!
This was beautiful, both on an acting and cinematographic level, the setting gives you some 90s vibes and I love it, Peder and Dorian have an incredible chemistry, I hope to see them work on more things together, Sophia is charming for the few moments she appears she steals the camera, very good choice of actors, all three, a great acting future awaits them, this should be a movie or a series because it is beautiful, very good work.
Our whole team thanks you! More to come! We love our actors! Our FULL story in the Scraps Novel coming this March and our upcoming feature film will make you VERY happy as we see the rest of Gus and Bridger's Summer.
More to come! our Full Scraps Novel comes out in March. Feature film we aim to film this summer! The more support we recieve, the sooner it can all happen. Tell your friends and fam to watch!
Really good short! I wanted this short to go on. This could be a movie or a series perhaps? Original screenplay, good actors, gorgeous cinematography. ❤❤❤ I love the innocences of youth. You are quite talented for someone so young.. This coming from a movie screenwriter in Los Angeles. Hope u do something with it!

Just finished watching... That was a most impressive film! Some viewers might wish we'd seen the two boys kiss at the end, but I applaud you for leaving that next barrier to intimacy off screen and to our imagination. The theme of not being afraid to try something new--whether skateboarding or just a French fry loaded with pepper--was delicately developed throughout. Your two fine actors looked and played their parts perfectly--Gus, actually more in touch with his feelings than Bridger (love his name), and Tara who just might be gay, recognizing as she does what's going on between them: "If you're drawing him and he's buying you ice cream, he's a friend." Love how in the campfire scene the two gradually get past all the things they believe they're supposed to say and want. We're left with them both realizing they've found something fare and precious in each other. Judging from some of the posted comments, you touched the emotions of many of your viewers the way you did mine. Thanks for that! Good luck with the novel and feature version.....
Thank you so much for all this lovely commentary. We all appreciate it so much. And yes! You hit the nail on the head of so many things we were aiming for! Thank you for your time in leaving this comment. We can’t wait to share the novel and feature too. We hope to do you proud! ❤
@@matthewfrancisj I'm so happy you found my comments on the mark. At risk of "reading into" I should have recognized that the central symbol in your fine film is the skate board, which Gus made but can not use, and which Bridger couldn't make but can use. The skate board symbolizes their complementary skills/abilities--and maybe even their personalities. Outgoing Bridger shows shy Gus how to skate, and Gus takes Bridger to the carpentry shop and shows him how he creates objects--like the skateboard--out of wood. Their relationship and the film's focus center on this one object, which brings them together. What's so cool is that one need not be conscious of any of this to get the emotional impact of the film. Then there's Gus's sketchpad and the import of Bridger asking Gus to "draw me." Okay, that's probably TMI...
This was so beautifully done. The images, acting, dialog: tentative yet laced with care and honesty. I love a film with some ambiguity but also some hope. The ending doesn't give answers, but gives the impression that this moment is a new beginning no matter what comes next. Just lovely.
Thank you! That was our goal! To provide a deeply rich, authentic, niche story that still anyone can relate with. We didn’t want to say too much. Life is more complex. So we left it open-ended, to feel real.
Wow what an all around cozy film. I really liked the chemistry between Gus and Bridgers' actors and also how tangible Gus' awkwardness was. It sort of reminds me of me when I get to know people initially. I also loved that you left the ending up to the imagination. I can't wait to see what sort of films you put out next!
My boyfriend has the same first AND last name as the director at the end omg! Ryan Nordin. I almost didn't click on this video, but I'm glad I did because that''s such a cool coincidence haha 👨🏽🤝👨🏻❤
That was seriously well done. There was so much to it that just what was in the dialogue and action. It seriously reminds me of "the way he looks" / 'hoje nao quero voltar sozinho" in its innocence and quality. Great job.

My heart leaped into my throat. The air in the choir room seemed to thin, and the other voices faded into a distant murmur. I stammered, unsure how to respond. He chuckled, a deep, melodious sound that sent shivers down my spine.
"Don't worry," he said, his grin widening, "Just teasing."
But it wasn't just teasing.
This story attempts to capture the essence of your memory, focusing on the emotional impact of Ethan's unexpected confession and the enduring power of unspoken emotions.
i’m so glad I got to be a part of this I hope you all love it ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Geez! Talk about sexual tension!
This made me tear up.
Beautiful and relatable story. Everyone deserves a friend that says I would kiss you right now. Alone and lonely not fun

wow. just wow. the score. the opening with those summer seedlings floaters in the air. The nostalgia of the cinematography and color. The strong actor performances of the main characters.

The campfire scene, it gave me tears

Thank you! Our goal was to make a very specific niche story that somehow still felt universal. Thank you for your kind words!

He joined the military, and the day he left was our "break up."
The gay guy pining over a straight guy is a tale as old as time.
Thank you for sharing. We're glad you loved the film and it resonated with you.
Beautiful short. Would make a great feature film. All of the actors were excellent. The score fit the narrative perfectly. 🙌🏻🎼💕

Cleverly orchestrated. At first it appears very time-specific, yet by the end it isn’t - the timeless emotions shine through.
Thank you! We wanted to tell our very specific, niche, small story, but still aim for it to feel universal!

We are happy you enjoyed the short film and look forward to sharing more with you!!
@@chancehousley Sorry, my typo above, meant to say "rare" and precious...

LOVE this. My first experience was this exact scenario at the beach minus the fire. ❤
thank you for sharing! We knew so many young queer people had moments like this. we wanted to bring it to life.
The color and the editing of this really feels like in 2000s really well done for making the atmosfere look like it.
Yes! That was our goal! ❤
Sometimes you just don't know, until you take that leap
Wow what an all around cozy film. I really liked the chemistry between Gus and Bridgers' actors and also how tangible Gus' awkwardness was. It sort of reminds me of me when I get to know people initially. I also loved that you left the ending up to the imagination. I can't wait to see what sort of films you put out next!
Brilliantly done! The timing of that look away at the end was so cunning, awesome watch beautifully put together.
Thank you! and yes! so many magical moments in this film.
The ending is criminal, I don't have a better word to describe it.
Great job.
