I think the shape might be called tailor scissors and you are correct that you basically slide them forward along the cutting surface and your fingers are elevated.

Nice haul Kate. I saw TK Maxx for the first time on a visit to the UK and thought it would be great to have one in South Aus. Finally we have one but sadly it was full of cheap rubbish- I was so disappointed. I know it is a less expensive shop but it was nowhere near as good as the stores I saw in the UK. I did like the vase you started the haul with. The flower place mats are cute too.
