PLASMA CUTTING GATES AND RISERS

  • Hello, my friends. This video concludes a project I have been working on for a greenhouse in West Virginia. The greenhouse is Victorian, and Chris Voleck of the Elwood Estate needed 5 different castings of numerous pieces to complete this project.
I have been missing use of the plasma
cutter due to construction, which cut off my supply of air.

Love your videos Clark. When cutting gates and risers off a flat face you can get angled 'flush cut' tips for your torch which allow a much closer cut than a regular straight tip.

My comment may be misplaced but I wanted to mention that I saw the capstan show up for use on the Tally Ho. I hope that Leo has expressed his thanks to you and those that worked so hard to complete the top piece for it. Without you and your friends that capstan may not have been completed. So thank you Clark for you hard work.

Clarke, if the Elmwood Estates owner is open to it, please post a photo of the Victorian greenhouse when it’s finished. Very interesting work for your foundry.

Clark , the arc of the plasma cutter needs a solid ground to burn right. A table with grating and a finger clamp works well for a work surface. Attach the ground leaf to the table and to the finger clamp. The finger clamp can hold the part in place when you are cutting. Make the finger clamp from 1/2" rod bend legs on the fingers to an angle that suits you. Add a chunk of 1"plate for weight then Attach a long enough lead to allow the clamp to be positioned anywhere on the table. Attach the lead to the table and you will have a better chance of having a good ground. On the two other legs you will need feet to span the gaps in the grating.

That plasma cutter is pretty awesome. Quite the transition from cutting the gates off to the cleaned up parts ready to ship. Thanks for showing us the final product and the back story on the project.

A good rule of thumb with a plasma torch is to watch the arc tail, if it is angling more than 20 degrees, up your amperage and your air pressure or go slower. For something like your risers I'd set it at 60 amps and 80 psi to start. Just a suggestion, love watching your videos!

#2 welding glasses work good with plasma. Not too dark so you can see, but still gives UV protection. Not eye aches.

I caught your use of "holding your mouth right", I've used one similar, that I got from my dad, that goes "holding your tounge right". people have often not understood my usage of it and I've explained, than when you are concentrating on something, you quite often hold your tounge between your teeth, often off to the side, ergo, holding your tounge right

Clark, try using the plasma cutter without the silver tip and a little more amperage. I only use my tip on flat metal. See if that works better for you. Thanks for the interesting videos.

Clarke, non ferrous metals can be re-melted and re-poured but we never see you melt sprues, risers and gates or any bad castings with iron. Perhaps on a future video you can explain why.

Nice looking castings. When I cut round stock. I would start at an angle and just pivot the tip through the cut.

Be careful making parts out of ford rotors. All your parts might just decide to warp up like crazy for no reason.😅

Hello Clarke, I'm thinking that you have a ground issue. Also, I'd set the torch to auto start as if you were cutting expanded metal. Plasma makes carving easy. Try starting from the far side and work toward you just washing the mental away. That is generally the technique I use to gouge out welds.

Watching you do all that hot work? an here I am, up in the 'wilds' of Connecticut living in the same weather as my childhood in Mobile and Laurel. Its gonna hit 90+ today, with almost 100% humidity, and thunderstorms will show up late this afternoon and me to poor to have AC running. (state electric co-op is run by a stock traded company that has ZERO electric generation capability and it fights against there being any electrical generators in the state, so all the electricity is bought on the open market at an uncharged rate, and this month the CEO pay goes to $35million dollars and his service area is smaller than Jacksonville Electric Authority a public co-op.... its insane. In Jax I never paid more than $65 for a month running in AC in a 850sqft apartment and here I am in a 790sqft apt and I pay nearly $500 if I run AC)

Omg i cannot watch the stupidity. Arc blows out every few seconds. How can you work like that? Is your machine getting a feedback that an arc is start? I dont think so. Is the machine ground? And so and so. Also 30amp is way to low for that job.
