As both a chef and a linguist I am pretty sure that Shawarma comes from the Turkish word Çevirme which simply means to rotate or turn round. Since Arabic doesnt have the Ch sound the closest sound is Sh. So Chevirme becomes Shevirme and to lingustically suit Arabic it became Shawarma
I was fortunate enough to have two excellent chefs for parents growing up. My dad is a trained Lebanese chef and mom is the old school mom who basically can cook every type of homemade meal. I’ve had shawarma for decades and from all over the world. I’ve yet to taste any shawarma that rivals the way my dad made it years ago. Al Hamdillah for such privilege.
I'm a chef myself but I'm also half Assyrian, Half Sicilian with a little Neapolitan too. So I'd be eating Lula Kabob/chicken or lamb shish Kebob, Kipteh, and other awesome stuff from one Grandma and my other Grandma would make me Lasagna, Macaroni and gravy(penne pasta with a tomatoes sauce with braised veal or pork shoulder, hot and sweet italian sausage and meatballs, Pesto or Gnocchi, frutti de mare pasta which as every seafood possible in a buttery garlicky tomatoe sauce. I'm a chef off and once for the last 20 years and to this day I can cook all the same Italian stuff jsut as good as my Nonna, she even said some of it was better but my Assyrian food comes out good but it never taste like my Nana's!! I don't know what it was, her buttery Persian rice with Lula kabob;; one of my favorite things ever
I think Shawarma "Doner Kebap" is basically a Turkish food, then at first it spread throughout the middle east n Gulf, and now it's well known though out Europe and even globally. Also a special Turkish dish "Iskandar" well known in the middle east, is also basically based on Shawarma!
It's Turkish, actually literally Turkic word. "Shawarma" came from "Çevirme" it means rolled/rolling in all Turkic language. We call Döner to this food. Döner is also mean rolling too. We don't call it çevirme because we rolling that as vertical angle. And we have another recipe we cooking while we roll it. And it's called Çevirme.
My grandfather told me it was nvented in turkey as a kebab but the syrian developed it and made the sesoning and add the fries and made the garlic sauce. R.I.P Grandfather😢
I’m not a Muslim, but I like the history of shawarma. To be honest, I’m both a foodie and a history buff. I’d like to make shawarma at home to try it for myself, because I never tried Middle Eastern food before. Not only that, I’m going to make a vegetarian version of shawarma. Wish me luck, and thank you for the history lesson!

Now, I'm getting hungry :) Just a little note to all muslim brothers and sisters across the world, my country has corrected it's name to it's proper way of writing and that is Turkiye, so it is no longer 'Turkey'. It was always 'Turkiye' but some hundred or so years ago just because native english speakers could not pronounce it properly they deemed it 'turkey', when in fact it had nothing to do with the beautifull and delicious bird turkey. :) The word 'Turkiye' is actually no different than Tur-ia, where the suffix -iye and/or -ia means -land of. Just like in Eston-ia, Latv-vi, Roman-ia etc etc. Most likely the -İye is of Aramaic origin has been transfered to Latin in the form of -ia. Same thing goes for the suffix -istan, for example which is in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Hindustan, Turkmenistan, Kazakistan, Uzbekistan, etc etc. again the -istan meaning -land of. And dear brothers and sisters please eat and drink good/clean foods and drinks as Allah commands us and do so in moderation, we are getting to be very obese and this is not good. ;) As salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu

I think Muslim Spanish brought to central America and they are the one invented and brought to turkeye and some parts of middle east. Fun fact, when Spanish christians and Muslim war happens , Spanish Muslims turns out rolled roasted meat to a flat bread and travels and migrated. Just my thoughts.

Yes, you're right but then don't claim lahmacun is turkish because lahmacun comes from the arabic word (lahma b ajin)= meat on/in dough.

nice Arab food Shawarma in Canada #❤️👍
In Iraq Shawarma is conveniently called "Guss" which means cuts in Arabic.
In Mexico, shawarma is called Taco Arabia
yes it s arabic from syria like homos falafel
If it’s Mediterranean it’s good enough for me.
The impalement technique in the Shawerma makes it either of Ottoman or Romanian origin 😂
I read in the Edmonton Journal one time that Edmonton has more Donair shops than rest of Canada combined. Too many Lebanese. 🇨🇦 🇱🇧 🇱🇧
