      Planned Obsolescence alright! I wouldn't have been overly concerned about resmed's 'threat' when you were doing repairs, I'd just ensure there was a disclaimer somewhere, stating that you are not an 'authorised repairer' for any of those companies, but simply an individual with years of knowledge...Anyway; I 'get' WHY they scared you, for sure. Doubtful they'd spend the huge amount of money on a claim that you were inhibiting their business. As you allude to; most corproations are just a scam.

    The problem is, everything you say makes perfect sense and is totally logical and in the consumers best interests. That last part, "in the consumers best interest", is where we really hit the wall. Anyway, I love your channel. I found It quite by accident and so glad I did. Keep speaking the truth. I'm new to CPAP, just under a month now. Your channel is important to me. In currently struggling with mask fit. I have four masks right now, two styles, two sizes each and I hate all of them. My sleep apnea is considered severely obstructive, 84.4 events per hour. I wish when I log into my air, I can see my numbers the way my doctor and pharmacy can see them. Resmed needs to make that possible.

      Try the Mirage Quattro I'm about to buy one as it has an adjuster for the nose.
      The my air app is all the info you need you can get more data off the actual machine in the menu. If you go into clinical settings you can add extra info onto the home screen. But! It's just not needed honestly, I have my min pressure at 4 and EPR at 3 and max pressure is 14 but I had it at 11 but the doctor wants it at 14 for a while so he can get data. But! Myair is all I need even when I set it at 11 I can still see the events per hour so if the pressure is too low I can see with events per hour.

      Hello Mona, I have used a Fisher and Paykel Brevida nasal pillow mask since 2017, I replace the mask each year. What type of mask is a personal choice, I think? The Brevida works for me. I'm at 67 events per hour and pressure in my Airsense 10 goes from 5 - 16. I usually check the screen on the device to see how I have slept. Occasionally on a hot summers night I might sweep the mask off for whatever reason and my raw throat sure tells me of that folly. Have you loaded the SD card into your computer to see if the data can be read by you?

      You can use the software from www.sleepfiles.com/OSCAR/ It is free and there is also a guide for installation and usage. But this is just for your information and it is not intended to replace specialized advice from a medic.

      Mine was 49 'events' per hour which caused the quack to say that I really needed one. The humidifier heater plate nixed itself and the replacement does not work after only 2 years
      The next step is a new motherboard which does not have an ETA and is not on backorder from China. (where else?)
      I think I'll train a couple of hamsters in a treadmill powering the pump if this Resmed 10 packs up before its allotted 7-8 years

    Thanks for posting this! Ive used an S8 since 2007 !! in Australia. What a great machine. It did exactly what you said- power button stopped working. Spoke to their repair channel & unstood quick time they did not want to help & wanted me to buy a new machine. It auto starts & stops when mask off so no big deal. Still going strong amazingly. I have a Airmini for travel & use as backip if S8 eventually dies.

    I know this is an older video, but I want to say my recently purchased Airsense 10 experienced loud motor noise and it was diagnosed as a faulty motor. Since I was told I would have to wait 1 year for a replacement.
    I am as offered a ResMed 10 for him and the pressure kept me awake so I got my 10 back, and run an air purifier near my machine to drown out the noise. Can you believe it?
    No one offered to do a repair, just get another one. My provider does not seem to interested in problem solving, or has limited knowledge, as she recommended not overloading myself with too much information, since I was doing well on the device.
    Nick you are a God send, please continue your good work. Stay well and take some time for yourself. Thank you so much.

      Nah they won't sell you a motor mate, i use to buy refurb / used machines and then take them apart and use parts from them etc. For example, someone will see a machine that no longer turns on for like $50 and you buy it, take it apart and find a loose connection and then you have a whole bunch of spares etc

      @@peterclancy3653 "selling their products"
      Yes indeed selling their products, but I believe that the discussion here is about
      PARTS. Many companies think that not selling repair parts will force you to buy
      another of their products. Sometimes this is correct. But some folks will buy
      a DIFFERENT company's product instead. And some, like me, will want to buy
      from a company that supports their PRODUCTS by making PARTS available to
      owners and repair shops.......
      Sadly in our "throw away" society most will succumb to the "upgrade to our new
      product" business model.

  • @wordscrafter
    @wordscrafter 3 года назад +5

    I'm sadly not surprised. I'd have hoped that, considering how vital these machines are, there'd be a better attitude from the companies. I guess greed knows no boundaries. I've had my dreamstation for 2 weeks. I watched your video about the foam issues, as well as the review about the new machine. I agree with all your points. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like the new one as much. I guess I'll just have to be super careful. I read articles that have been released, which suggested that humidity and improper cleaning contributed to the breakdown. But I also looked at recall lists and there are at least 20 for Phillips' parts, mostly with ventilators. I appreciate all the info you put on here. Thanks so much.

    • @shanerorko8076
      @shanerorko8076 3 года назад +1

      Mate some people have used the phillips for years and never had the issue. And is there any reports of people actually inhaling the foam? So far I've heard some got into someones water res thats it.
      But let's pull the product world wide.....

    • @CPAPReviews
      @CPAPReviews  3 года назад

      Considering the how fast the air travels and how lightweight the foam i'd say there's potential there but even still, not a crazy health risk! Even still, if there's part of the machine breaking down then it's not great and i wouldn't want to own a machine knowing that there's a potential faulty component either way. Cheers

    After a sleep test the therapist suggested I needed to replace my S9. I followed the advice and bought the Airsense 10. Not from Australia but from the USA . It saved $1000. Resmed refuse to honour any warranty. I can fly to the USA with my machine under my arm and still be ahead.
    The reason I changed was that the local agent wanted $400 technology fee to take the S9. Then estimated $250 for Resmed to fix it! On top of that HCF refused to give a rebate under my health insurance citing a TGA ruling.
    As a consumer you have an expectation that a device should last more than a reasonable period. This exceeds the warranty period. Tackle the manufacturer on this basis and you can win. I’ve done it with Breville.

    • @CPAPReviews
      @CPAPReviews  3 года назад +1

      Hi Geoff, that's crazy mate! It is true what you said about the warranty. Even if it's out of warranty then you can still take on the manufacturer on the basis of 'reasonable period'. The new Dreamstation 2 only comes with a 2 year warranty which isn't exactly a long period of time. Cheers

    • @geoffreystone1598
      @geoffreystone1598 3 года назад +2

      Resmed won’t honour the warranty because it’s a grey import. The serial number identifies the machine as sold in the USA. I have to put in an address in Hawaii to use their software.

    I have to agree with you.
    I took my unit in to the only store I had near me to have them look at it because it seemed to be acting up. I was told I've been on therapy for over 5 years and was entitled to a new machine. ( Here in Ontario Canada we can get support for purchase through OHIP where we can get 80% paid for. The catch you need to revisit the sleep clinic to get a Prescription to get this assistance. This probably explains why when you go through these stores they cost roughly 2x as much as a CPAP website.) So I contacted the sleep clinic thinking they would just renew the prescription, but no. I had to contact my doctor and get another referral ( charge to OHIP) and then I'd get a consult with the sleep clinic for which I'd probably have to do another sleep study (OHIP again). Can't say I was looking forward to such a thing during the pandemic, or going to sleep somewhere other than my bed at the best of times.
    Thankfully our family, at this time, have insurance so I was pleasantly surprised if I could get a copy of my original prescription and the sleep report data I could purchase at a lower cost through a CPAP company selling on Amazon.
    This is so convoluted and ridiculous. The only reason I had to do this is because my unit had developed a noise that I could not figure out where it was coming from. Since I feel the therapy does help me I didn't feel comfortable taking the unit apart in case I permanently damaged it without a means to continue therapy.
    It seems so ridiculous that treatment for many different diseases e.g. diabetes, that the companies that supply the means to enable people to live feel they need to gouge them. Not everyone has medical assistance from their governments or insurance to help them.
    Thank you for explaining how these units are constucted.

    Absolutely agree. In the US, Congress is now addressing the Right To Repair. I'm sure a lot of manufacturers will get on the bandwagon that this is bad, but I think everybody is getting pretty fed up with the inability to replace simple parts or even just the battery, in the case of Apple.

    My AirSense 10 died, but I had the S8 from before, so I plugged that in---and was amazed that I couldn't turn it on. Fortunately someone else had posted the solution you mentioned, which was to clean the contacts, which I used. It was cheaper for me to buy a re-furbished AS10 than one of the new AS11s, like half as much. I did check out the repair prices for the AS10, which would have been more than the re-furbished unit! I kept it because I might be able to fix it one day. Thanks for your info! Sadly, the ResMed folks are making it worse, by going for disposable mask liners that cost $50 a month instead of just replacing the parts every six months for $45.

    I'm a techy. I had a S9 from 2001 to 2022 and had problems with the buttons from time to time but repaired myself also. Finally I decided to upgrade and purchased an AirSense10. Very happy with it until now - March 2024. The heater pad has stopped working. I can't buy one anywhere, even though they are the simplest thing to swap - 4 x torx screws and unplug a single cable. I was hoping it was the thermal fuse, but that is showing continuity just fine.
    While I might not attempt to repair a circuit board in these machines, I'd be fully capable of swapping in a replacement or any other components, so i think ResMed should be taken to task over right to repair and provide any parts their loyal customers request.

    Thanks for the update. I fell for the Phone scheme and replaced my phone when my battery charge would mysteriously plummet from full to 1%. The ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) later found it was part of the planned obsolescence. Replacement battery was quoted at $150. Apple has forever charged Australians a remote premium or some other fancy bullshit name for loading up the prices.
    Back to CPAP, I have a Resmed device and have wondered whether I could use Amazon to buy parts. It seems hardly worthwhile as the prices are pretty consistent. Doesn’t really seem like there is competition in the CPAP world.

    • @CPAPReviews
      @CPAPReviews  3 года назад +3

      Hi there, yeah apple is the worst! But certainly not alone. I don't know too much about the amazon stuff mate although i'm not a fan of Amazon either as a company. There's heaps of competition in the CPAP world but the manufacturers start with crazy high rrp prices so even after online competition the prices still seem high. I know for a fact that most resellers are barely making 5-10% after a sale on masks / parts / machines. The only ones making any money are the companies that build them. Resellers get nothing.

    As a senior who really needs this for my health and with no insurance that covers any kind of CPAP anything this concerns me. When you have to stop working these costs really dig into the budget. When I started realizing all the expenses that would be around my therapy it was a little daunting. In only 2 months my therapy has made such a difference and I began to think of those who really can't afford it or those who would make the great effort and monetary sacrifice to get what they need so other health issues from it wouldn't start. It is kind of wrong I think. But on a positive note as I have said in a few others I was so glad to find you and the channel Nick. Thanks so much for everything you have given so far. HDM/BREAS Z1 travel cpap machines are generally very lightly used - occasional trips a few times a year. The model has been discontinued after 7 years, and over the past twelve months, dozens of people have pulled them out to check them before a trip, only to see a non-functioning machine with the same "fault code 33" - refer to provider". Company response is "these are no longer supported, we won't tell you what the fault is, or how to fix it. We won't fix it. Buy the new replacement Z2 auto".

      Unfortunately, like he was saying, part of the problem is that some of the new products either have no, very few, or not very desired features, making pple. not really desire the new machines that much more in order to be willing to pay so much extra for a new one! Like cars & phones, some will replace them every five years, whether they need a new one or not. Some of us will still use what we have as long as it’s running/working well! I sold the first car I bought at 5 yrs., but the next one, I had for 17 yrs., but it had just hit only 120,000 miles, & the transmission & AC had just been rebuilt/replaced! I also have been rebuilding my computer for a while now, & I tend to keep my cell phones a long time, too. If they’re still working properly, why waste so much? That’s money I need, and I’m sure others do, too, not to mention added waste in our environment that’s unnecessary. Some products (like printers) stop at a certain point, but there’s a physical reason that they do. However, if you search for it, there is a way to fix them! It doesn’t cost a lot and it can be messy, from what I’ve read, & that printer company won’t tell you it’s available. Sad, in my opinion. Just more electronic waste. 🙁

      Unfortunately in a world that rates itself on economic growth (and no-one can give a reasonable justification on why 'economic growth' is important) the only way companies can service is through product turnover. Modern technology no longer follows the "necessity of invention", but rather now it the "invention of want". This is onw reason the "Right to repair movement" is gaining momentum.

    My dad and I both have sleep apnoea and have a lot of conversations like this (so this will probably become our first RUclips channel to talk about, lol). He likes a machine with a 10 year life span, unfortunately he has noticed that there is a definite push to upgrade. He's had a couple machines do 10 years (including a refurbished one that was 5 years old when he got it). His brand new machine he got a few months ago, he was advised it would probably last 5-6 years.
    I've been on CPAP for 3 years and am already seeing things with my machine (which funny enough is a Dreamstation 1).
    Interestingly we've also seen differences in price and advice for CPAP between South Australia (where he is) and New South Wales (where I moved to).

    Capitalism requires consumerism to function, if we stop buying new products the business owners and shareholders lose a margin of their profits. The system is geared for the ordinary working man on the street to work work work and spend spend spend. Big pharma and medico companies are in on it also, it is a very viscious cycle. Once again a great episode Nick. I really get a lot out of your RUclips instruction/information videos and thank-you for what you do.....you're the best discovery since sliced bread.
    And let's correct your error .....this isn't a negative episode. It's factual, its useful and its validating. I have had a resmed elite for over 11 years and its working like a dream. It's practically bullet proof and there have only been a couple of issues over that time that were a bit tricky. One was when the power cord just stopped working which meant buying a replacement cord which was fairly pricey to replace. More recently I had a problem with the lid on the heated water tank. I organized a visit from my original qualified cpap supplier who checked my machine and did a lid swap with me for the watertank and that fixed that problem.
    Other than that the machine is doing really fine after all this time but he warned me that it was due to switch itself off anytime because it was approaching its recommended expiry date. That means I'd have to get a new one in that case which would be, in my eyes, an unnecessary expense for me. A new one would be more than the cost of a new washing machine. I'm not very happy about that seeing as its working fine.
    I think what you said about manufacturers building in planned obsolescence adds unnecessary financial burden that isn't justified if the machine is still performing well. Being on a small income i just can't see the the value in replacing my machine just because the manufacturers have built in an expiry date. I resent "planned obsolescence" when I have a perfectly good machine that works well.
    Apart from that, I just want to say how much your videos have helped me to understand how to keep my resmed working well. Your other subscriber's information is so helpful as well, so Thank you and please keep up the good work Nick. You are much appreciated.

    I wonder whether the ACCC would look into this. It's clearly unconscionable. And there is a high percentage of CPAP users who are older, many of whom really can't afford a new machine. Just like many repair people like you clearly didn't have the clout to take on a multinational company.

The on button had two prongs on it that fitted into slots in a relay type switch to activate the starting sequence and these had broken off and the broken bit had jammed the relay. I dis assembled the whole electronic panel and the relay to remove the contamination but could not buy a new button, advised to purchase a new control panel and because the machine was over ten years old. I made a new button ( plastic ) took about 30 minutes. The machine is now 17 years old and still working fine. Fully agree with you. Unfortunately I found ResMed the worst. For example their early nose pillow mask had no way to adjust the strap. Naturally it stretched as it aged, but there was no way to adjust it - an obvious ploy to sell ridiculously priced replacements in a very short time. There was nothing too high tech about the straps. I reckon $10 total cost for mass producing them would still give the manufacturer their profit - but no - the strap was something like $60 if I remember. Outrageous. I got out of using Resmed, and have been happy using F&P - but mind you, they don't give away their spares either - but at least they have them.

      Hey! Welcome to the channel and thanks for sharing your experience. Couldn't agree with you more. The ResMed P10 Straps was one of the biggest scams in the history of CPAP. That tiny piece of elastic which would have a cost price of less than a $1 (honestly) retails at over $100 here in Australia and yes it stretches out of place very quickly. They did introduce some 'adjustment clips' however it's a short term fix really and the rrp can no way be justified! It's an absolute joke. F&P are not much better unfortunately. ResMed, Philips & FP have had abusing customers for years and it's lucky that other companies are coming in to provide some price competition for consumers. Cheers

    These C Pap companies are DISGUSTING! I had one of the Phillips machines that is recalled due to the foam that breaks apart. I was NEVER notified by anyone about the recall. Not my doc, not Phillips, not the durable medical equipment provider, not anyone. I used the thing for a good 8 years. So God knows what kind of damage was done to my lungs. Then I got a new Resmed Airsense 10. It has lasted so far 1 1/2 years. And all of the sudden it will not power on. No matter what I do. Looked online and low and behold, this problem is now beginning to happen everywhere to people! This is clearly a defect in these machines. The machine is still being paid for by my insurance. They pay for two years on it. Meanwhile, I drive to another city today to go to the durable medical equipment provider where I got it. They refuse to help me in any way on the machine. Saying they have not had any new Resmed machines in for nearly a year now, due to Resmed being backed up trying to replace all of these defective machines!
    Remember, my insurance is literally STILL paying for this machine monthly! And the supplier never notified me of this issue. I asked them why they have not notified me. Their response: “Well, Resmed said they notified all customers. But we are seeing most of our customers actually saw it on the news”. Ok, so if you know that, why haven’t you notified those of us who are your customers? Nobody is taking any responsibility here. I am pissed off enough, I am ready just to drag everybody’s a$$ into court! Resmed, the medical supplier, insurance, everyone. And let the court sort it out. These supply companies are absolutely worthless! They mark everything up terrible. Then wash their hands as soon as you leave with the equipment.
    What are they really for at that point, besides being a middle man making everything cost twice as much as it should? As consumers, we should be able to just get the machines directly from the manufacturer. Since the medical equipment suppliers, won’t back what they sell anyway! The whole damn medical equipment field is a GIANT SCAM! I am not for bigger government. But in this case, I am ready for government to take oversight of this market to the next level and really crack down on these CROOKS!
    LISTEN UP PHILLUPS, RESMED ALL OF YOU! I truly hope you are reading this! YOU ARE CROOKS, CRIMINALS AND EXTORTION EXPERTS! Just like the pharmaceutical companies! You provide subpar service. Subpar products. And then literally charge thousands for equipment that costs less than $100 to build. I know, because I have priced out the raw parts. And that is at retail prices. You buy in massive bulk. So you likely pay, much, much less. Not to mention, these machines haven’t made any real advancements in technology in years. Minor improvements here and there.
    They are literally just small air pumps. With some basic electronics running them, we have smarter tech in our smartphones! No different then the rip off hearing aides field. That charges thousands for little hearing aides that cost somewhere between $25-75 each to build. As consumers, WE ARE SICK OF BEING SCREWED OVER BY YOU CROOKS!
    As you can tell, I am pissed! 😡 No machine. No idea when I will get a new one. WORST PART: it is STILL BEING PAID FOR!!! NOBODY WILL HELP ME. AND I literally cannot sleep with out a cpap. Been awake for two days now… I am getting ready to sue the pants off Resmed and the medical supplier!

    Hence why older is sometimes better. They use the same generic 3 phase blower motor in all of them i have worked on while the control boards get crappier and crappier. Im pretty sure they make the boards timeout in the firmware by now. Very frustrating. Wonder if the motor expire warning is triggered by use time, current draw, or either and if it can be resetted. Current draw triggered warning would definitely be a good thing as it would be an accurate warning of iminant failure.

    Thanks for this video and also the warning about Dreamstation one problems. In my experience, here in the US, insurance will cover a new machine every five years. For the last year, my Dreamstation acted funny once in a while, so I was just hoping it would get me through until I could get a new one. It made it, but right after I got the new one the degraded insulation issue was in the news. But the medical equipment company told me that unless I use an ozone cleaning method, there was nothing to worry about. I don’t use ozone, but i am curious if that is really the only issue? (Besides worrying if this machine will last 5 years!)

      Hi Bonnie, it's still early days so lets just see what Philips has to say in the near future. I'm doubtful that it will be the ozone that is causing the degradation. We will see

      Hi Pete, thanks for the kind words. How great would it be if when you registered your device they gave you a price list for all 'replaceable components', estimate life span of the components, links on where to buy and also some technical videos on how to replace them. It would be a game changer!

    Unfortunately here in the United States many older adults like me have to rely on Medicare insurance to recieve a new CPAP machine...My current machine (System One) is 6+ years old and on the recall list but I can't sleep without it, It's been over a month since I was forced to go through another in office sleep study due to Medicare requirements and Medicare still hasn't approved a new machine from my medical equipment supplier...I'm at my wits end trying to deal with this BS and I'm hesitant to take my machine apart to remove the foam because if something goes wrong I don't have a backup

  • @Kris-qr5hw

    I agree the repair cost on our simple machines is exorbitant. I am surprised with it being a medical machine that has built in pressure feed back, we do not have to have it calibrated at regular intervals.
    I for one know my new S10 reads 0.2cm/h2o higher than what a seperate calibrated manometer reads. I also swear the flow rate/tidal flow is not consistent during the night at a given pressure.
    I run 13.4cm fixed no ramp, cold and dry line. The air escaping the mask seems to have differing velocities. Even more pronounced when removing the hose when getting up some mornings it’s like a tornado where as others it’s a gentle blow.

    Hi mate, as usual superb content, is there any loop hole where you can teach others how to fix the CPAP machine and where to get the parts, i don't think there is regulation that strict you to do modification on the machine you own.

      Hey mate, i'm going to start doing some repair vids i recon but the hardest thing is to get the parts. I use to just buy used, and broken machines and then use them for spare parts etc. Kind of like a pick-a-part scrap yard etc. Would be awesome if you could buy a spare turbine or PCB board etc. Maybe one day

    I'm a private mechanic (who got diagnosed with sleep apnea recently) this is nothing compared to the constant cat and mouse we play with auto manufacturers.
    They design stuff to make it harder for us to repair and withold information. Then it takes the after market a few years to catch up with new models.
    Tesla is the worst company for it and lot's of tesla cars end up sitting in scrap yards because of how difficult they make them to repair. This is not good for the environment.
    But yea CPAP machines aren't close to cars or printers ☺

    I worked in the electronics repair industry. I agree we do need the right to buy the parts or at least have a independent repair centre. The $150 per hour labour is on the lower side for Australia to repair anything electronic. The only way to drop this price is get the government and unions to stop interfering in are lives the labour costs are high due to taxes and regulations that are not needed. Sorry for the ranting but it’s not just the company at fault here.

    My heater hose stopped working so I put on a new one and it doesn’t work as well. I am thinking that it’s something inside the machine that quit and that’s why the hoses are not working. I'm dreading the day my Resmed Airsense 10 dies event though it is only 7 months old! Thanks for the great video Nick!
    Question, after I wash out the hose to my machine, I use "run mask fit" to blow water out and dry the inside. Will doing this affect the longevity of my machine? I do it twice a week. Also, if you want to get your machine repaired or order some parts, what do you do in the meantime for a machine while yours is down?

    • @CPAPReviews
      @CPAPReviews  3 года назад

      Hi there, you're very welcome. Great question, no it won't affect the longevity of your device :-). Most people will just hire a machine whilst it's getting repaired. If your clinic is a good one they won't charge you for it. Take care. Nick

    the reason being of the DreamStation was because of the Soclean ozone damaging the inside of the machine. causing that "Foam" problem. Its not that they wanted everyone to buy the DreamStation 2... Because of that they actually had to launch the DreamStation 2 a month or 2 earlier or they would lose a lot of sales.

    • @CPAPReviews
      @CPAPReviews  3 года назад

      Hi Chris, appreciate the comment but sounds like a scapegoat to me and if you dig beneath the surface and look back through forums there's plenty of people that have never used any ozone devices that have had the issue. The ozone generated by the devices is extremely low! You would get more ozone exposure visiting the beach. Cheers

      @@CPAPReviews I might add that Ozone damages rubber components like tyres on your car. It is called "Ozone Aging" But it takes years to do that, and then you see it as little cracks (checkmarks) in the sidewall of the tire (tyre). I know this as in my professional career I am somewhat of a rubber compound expert. I spent yearscompounding rubber compounds for industrial applications.
