I don't know, this game feels so alive and cartoony compared to the previous ones and I absolutely love it! It's a step in the right direction.
More like a 10 meter jump in the right direction
More like in the right place
Yeah, Super Mario Bros. Wonder does feel cartoonish and I think it's should be good on the Nintendo Switch when it comes out on October 20 this year.
All the extra animations really add
They fired the original Mario voice. U still happy?
I have seen no bad reactions to this game, it is literally beautiful.
I’ve sadly seen people say the game looks mediocre
My younger brother doesn’t like it, he isn’t too big on Nintendo but he still likes a good amount of the games. He wanted another NSMB game, I don’t really know why, all I know is he is a really big fan of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and I just guess he isn’t a big fan of all of the changes this game made.
People say it doesn’t sound like Charles Martinet
Ryukar said it looked gimicky and he wasnt a big fan. I think it looks unique, different and cool tho
@@NiqRipplehey can make their own platform if they aren’t satisfied 🙄
This new version of Mario is how the 90's kids remember their childhood Mario. He looks and poses exactly like the Mario from the 90's. He looks alive, cartoony and waky.
That's exactly right. Mario is so alive in this game and everything about him screams SMB3/SMW. I love it.
@@KingdomHeartsBrawler one of my favorite things relating to the smb3/smw animations is the p-speed running and jumping animations, I loved those and was wishing they’d bring them back
As a 90s kid i remember Mario as a Danny DeVito clone.
Agree, this game something you would give to a 37 year old kid.
@@kristjanbirnirivansson528yup that's me 😂
I love the clay-like design mario has in this game
It's similar to Kirby or Yoshi's Island! And as a fan of both series, I love what they did here!😄
i love the more cartoony smug face he does while running at full speed, never knew i would go "awww!" at a old Italian plumber
Its like the cover of the first nintendo power issue
it sorta reminds me of kirby canvas curse
@@somedestinyfanyaknow3703dk about old; if I'm not mistaken, Nintendo listed Mario as fictionally 24-25 years old
joyous to know that mario now moves as energetic as his voice and personality is. always felt so weird that he was weirdly static in nsmb and he just doesnt move very silly, he looks like hes having fun :)
Hooray! Mario characters can have emotions now!
Mario had emotion in Sunshine and Galaxy though…
@@traviscunningham7062 Leave it to youtube to overanalyze a comment. I obviously meant that Mario & co. generally exist as cutouts that can only express joy, sadness, and shock.
@@traviscunningham7062 note how long ago those games were created, im talking about the entire decade we had of nonstop nsmb rehashes
It's one of those thing where I never noticed how dead and lifeless Mario's animations were in the past until I saw the trailer for Mario Wonder, and now I can't believe it was ever really like that before.
Wonder is how I always imagined playing the old games
They aren't.
Honestly same. The game feels very alive
This entire video shows how much more original and artistic Super Mario Bros Wonder will be. NSMB was fun, but the series clearly needed this for it to prosper. Great video, tons of analysis was needed to create this and it's made well.
Not sure I totally understood you properly, but if I did, I’m quite sure that this isn’t meant to be part of the “New” series anymore. I’m led to believe this through the _drastic_ visual and animation changes, as well as the clear deliberate decision to leave “New” out of the title logo. Again, pretty sure the New series has concluded, be it for the better or the worse.
@@user-ku3sr7cl3uyes, they didn't imply it was part of NSMB.
@@MirrorHall_Clay just wasn’t sure due to the wording of “the series clearly needed this…”
Agreed it does
@@user-ku3sr7cl3uit means the 2d Marios
9:44 it's really clever and makes a ton of sense that they did this. in almost every mario game, you can only do two quick fireballs and then you have to wait a second. it makes a lot of sense that this is the case if mario is using one hand, and then the other.
i love how everything looks so ALIVE. the animations and colors are some much more expressive and vibrant. it gives everything so much more life, where everything just looks kind of soulless in the nsmb games.
I love how Mario's new animations also make him change expressions. Like getting a frown mouth when running or smiling when jumping.
It just gives him so much more personality
Also it is very cool how Yoshi and Daisy are going to be playable characters in Wonder
Mario's new animations were clearly inspired by SMW and SMB3. The "fly" jump, the falling, the pivoting, the crouching and ESPECIALLY the "looking up" part. I bet that pressing up can make all the other characters do the same thing too.
Mario's animations in this game have a lot of care put into them, the poses not only look great but they also resemble artwork and the sprites from older games, his skidding animation and the one where he jumps with his arms out are straight out of Mario 3/World, as is his crouching animation. All of them look beautiful in motion and just makes me happy all around, THIS is how i imagined a modern Mario game would look as a kid.
I'm so obsessed with how cartoony and expressive everyone is in this game.
Yeah I don’t like it I agree no expressions in the characters
@@RarkssWhy are people like this, you don’t like emotions or sum?!
@@geschnitztekiste4111 no
@@Rarkssdefinition of blinded by nostalgia
@@ribbie5362 yes i agree everyone else is blinded by nostalgoia
At first I didn’t have much of a problem with the NSMB art style but putting these two side by side I’m actually really glad they decided to switch it up, I really love this art style a LOT more due to how lively the characters look
When I watched the SMBW trailer and I saw Yoshi's flutter jump animation it made me smile that they added that little detail of Yoshi struggling to stay afloat, really trying to keep Mario out of imminent demise.
(It's also a little sad that they removed the triple-jump, but I guess that was a New-Super-Mario-Bros thing)
I like how creative the different worlds are seeming to be!
The reason Yoshi isn’t running that much is because he is a playable character that you can ride on. There are 4 color variants of him; green, blue, red, yellow
Time for yoshi to ride yoshi
Yessir
Now if he can knock off players and eat them and throw them he'll be busted. But he can get revenge on Mario ether way
If he is just playable he’ll be there for easy mode probably, but I think that it might be a power-up that turns the character into yoshi, so the green yoshi was just Luigi with a power-up.
@@DavisDeKarper if it was a power up I dont think it would reflect in the lives counter.
06:55 The push behaviour exists in NSMB DS's Mario vs. Luigi mode. There's an animation when you push the other players away.
I really love how Mario and friends are a lot more expressive than they were in the New Super Mario Bros games. Like when Peach comes out the pipe, it adds more character.
Amazing how subtle changes make all the difference in how smooth the gameplay seems to be!
As someone who vastly prefers 3D Mario games over 2D, I'm very happy with what Nintendo's done here. Super Mario Bros Wonder is exactly what 2D Mario needed, and having an actual art direction and all the characters stylised like this makes all the difference. I've no doubt the gameplay's going to be a breath of fresh air too, based on what we've seen so far, but the overall visual presentation is what I've wanted from a new 2D Mario game for half my life now. The first New Super Mario Bros was fine for what it was, but every other game after that pushed its luck and drove the 2D Mario series right into the ground. This looks to have that heart, soul, passion and creative spark you'd see in the 3D games, especially Odyssey and Bowser's Fury. I can't wait to play it, and it comes out a few weeks before my birthday too!
Happy VERY Early Birthday!💖🍄🎂
@@sarinabina5487 Thanks!
The first game I played as a 5-year old kid, and the game I credit my now 29-year hobby of casual gaming, was Super Mario Bros. 3. This game is bringing back that same excitement I had as a kid.
I love how much more life is added to Mario, he looks genuinely happy this time around!
WONDER FLOWER: It would be really cool if there were low gravity segments like the sky nighttime theme in SMM 2. There could be cool platforming challenges with this, which would be very fun. Maybe it could even be combined with the rolling ball thing we see in the trailer
:00 YES
It’s amazing how much personality expressive animation can add to a game. It’s like a night and day difference, but so much of this perceived difference is just from more expressive and inspired animation. The actual artwork and models are still very reminiscent to NSMB. Just much more creatively animated.
Yoshi isn’t running away from Mario in wonder because it’s being controlled by another player.
Time for yoshi to get revenge. I wonder if you can eat or knock others off of you
The mario sprite for Super Mario Bros Wonder looks a lot like the beta images for Super Mario 64. Also the swimming animation and the animation where he was riding the bulls ( or whatever they are ) looks like they’re straight from Mario 64 😍
HE LISTENED TO US! He asked what video we want, we responded and he accually listened and made the video! Not a lot of creators do that.
I'm SO glad Mario actually has more motions and poses with his hands, it's always really bothered me how he kept them in fists for every single thing he did, even grabbing objects and clapping which looked impractical and weird.
The slowdown pivot turn is a direct throwback to its first SMB animation, where you can see Mario stop and change direction, not necessarily inspired by Sonic.
these animations remind me a lot of mario world. i would love to see a comparison between wonder and the mario world sprites
Same!
the thing about the skidding/pivot animation in wonder is that its actually the same pose as the NES mario bros ! :)
I think this is going to be the 2D equivalent to Super Mario Galaxy, just a beautiful experience with great music, designs, gameplay and sfx, and I am also really interested in the story since Daisy is also there.
I feel every character has different atributes bind to the wonderflowers because in the trailer, you can see Daisy picking up a wonder flower as an orange logo appears (probably because Daisy has a lot of orange colours. The landscape also turns orange and yellow.
It has some of that flash player games art vibe but with smooth movements at the same time, and i love that
fr
I at first I was scared it was a mobile game lol
going to the difference you mentioned at about 11:13, there’s actually a different sound effect for both the elephant and mushroom powerups, go back through the trailer and listen to them closely again, the mushroom sounds closer to the nsmbu one
11:33 I actually love the new super mushroom design. It reminds me of the slightly more realistic mushroom design of the GameCube era up to Mario 64 DS’ super mushroom
Yeah, they have pretty much used the same unionised mushroom design since the Wii, but changing it now is just another hint that we may be in for a new era of more wacky, more diverse and more expressive Mario again, just like in the GameCube games. It’s gonna be glorious, especially with the RPGs coming back too
MARIO DOESNT LOOK LIFELESS ANYMORE
its been 10 YEARS SINCE A SUPER MARIO 2D GAME!!! FINALLY!
god i dont hope this gets the pixar approach where it is not good because its original and they just end up making a sequel for their populair series
Im so glad players no longer collide. Not a lot of people seem to have noticed that change, but I'm personally very excited for it. I always found it frustrating and annoying rather than fun.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Differences. This game has higher gameplay difficulty than the original Super Mario Bros., with fewer warp zones and power-ups, and more enemies. Six new levels were created for the game, all of which were reused in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.
Lost levels the real smb 2. This might be harder than that
I mean the game is probably not hard cus it’s Mario but I wouldn’t mind that tbh!
I just realised: in the mario movie there was a scene where Mario and donkey kong changed from the foreground to the background.
In smbw we saw the characters doing this too.
Just wanted to point that out.
It’s insane how detailed the characters animations are !!! I love it so much
Hi Nin10doland I love this and I hope you have a good day and you are awesome

@@Gassich thank you I love you too I hope you have a good day as well you seem friendly and nice
New Super Mario Bros Series: plain bread
Super Mario Bros Wonder: 5 LAYERED CAKE
From the thumbnail alone just how much of a step up wonder is from super Mario bros U there is so much character expression from Mario gritting his teeth as he ground pounds to yoshi trying his absolute best to flutter jump, just chefs kiss beautiful
I feel like (at least in the first games) from the nsmb series, they simply just wanted to get the models in and working, not really caring how much detail went into their expression
Smbw flips that on its head, the characters are incredibly expressive and I’m all for that change
@@user-ku3sr7cl3u like gameplay, character expression, and presentation should go hand in hand
I’m glad that you made a video on this, a lot of people were saying it just looked like another new super Mario bros game.
At one part in the trailer, it shows a box with Mario's logo on it appear when Mario gets near to its area. This makes me wonder if there are secret areas and bonuses available only to certain characters, adding additional replayability for each character. If they are some kind of collectible, I could see 100% speedruns for the game being very interesting, likely always using multiplayer with bubbled-characters (if bubbles return) to transport extra characters to these blocks
so like 3D world?
@@Gar-753 kinda, but 3D world mostly just had the flag pole finishing thing, there was only a tiny bit for secret unlockables, right?
@@GameJam230 There were character specific buttons that only that character could press.
@@Gar-753 right, I forgot about those. They were only used a few times each though if I recall
At around 2:13... you remember the old debate whether Mario hits blocks with his head or with his fists?
Well, it seems Nintendo added a new animation, lasting just a few frames, where Mario clearly swaps his hands RIGHT when he hits the ? block, confirming that, in fact, he uses his fists to make the power-ups/coins pop out.
I never would have noticed without the video being played back multiple times. All the small artistic details in this game are just sooo on point. ^-^
This is the first main line mario game where yoshi is his own separate playable character
The new look pretty different from the rest of the super Mario bros games, mario for example gives a cartoony/comic kinda vibes wich is pretty cool, while the environment look like where in a dream
Some animations of NSMBU are actually cut down in SMM, so I’m not sure how accurate all of these would be but I guess it’s a good enough representation. Cool video!
Bro is 70% rubber lol.
The amount of polish/attention to detail in this game is really refreshing to see
6:55 this actually depends on which side of the wall that Nsmb's mario is holding on. if its the left, he faces frontwards and if its on the right, as you see on the video, he faces backwards
It seems like Nintendo may be making a similar change to design philosophy as sakurai did with smash 4/ultimate, by making characters always face or be angled towards the camera. Overall, I'm really liking it!
Love this comparison! Great job! Can't wait for this masterpiece of a game!
My first mario game was Mario World, so I'm beyond happy that we're getting something similar for the switch. 😊
Cool vid I like this kind of videos
Can’t wait for this game!
Great review, I love how Nintendo made the characters react how they feel in real life and very cartoonish this time, I might not play the game but excited to watch tons of gameplays in the near future.
06:30 In NSMB DS Mario already looked up or down during boss fights depending on where the boss was. In NSMB2 you can make Mario look up by pressing Up. In NSMBU I think Mario looks towards Star Coins but I'm not 100% sure about that one.
Tbh I think its a SMW reference, cuz at he beginning of the tower levels he looked up then entered.
Or we just looking too much into it and he looks up cuz the devs thought “ hey, this could be cute.”
@@Bavid1805 Most likely the devs thought it was cute if he turned his head up while "UP" was pressed. Also, Mario can kick shells upward in that game, so maybe it would've made sense for him to actually look up.
Update: Just realized what you actually meant. If you are talking about the cutscenes where Mario goes to the castles, looks up, and then walks into them, then it is most likely not a reference, because you arent in control of Mario in that cutscene
This one feels so alive and I love it
2:20 in New Super Mario Bros, Mario has THREE different kinds of jumps animations, only one was used for the comparison. Also when Mario faces the other way, it looks different. You can see the other side of it because of the perspective.
6:24 When you stand close to a star coin in NSMB, Mario's looks at the star coin (in all NSMB games except DS). Also Mario looks directly at bosses when they move around during boss battles.
this game is gonna be so good
I didn't want to buy this game but is growing on me and this video just sold the game, I'm getting it. Thanks for the content, really good video my friend!!!!
"like Sonic's animation"
>Mario stopping in Mario 1 and 3
>Yoshi struggling in Yoshi's Island
so freakin hyped for this
Just a bit of advice. For these comparisons, you generally should start with the old and compare to the new...
When you show the "new" first, it leaves me to not care as much about the "old"
It's better to show improvement by comparison, not downgrading by comparison.
It was just jarring because most comparisons follow that rule. Also quickly switching between the clips, while specifically talking about one clip can be confusing as well.
Show one clip with commentary. Then the next with commentary. Then show both to really hammer the differences to the viewer.
11:02 i actually feel like NSMB nailed that one better, the ? blocs sound more like machines that pops out a strange product and it still sounds just as iconic. But i admit that the SMB. W's sound effect for ? blocs is more surprising, as if its a real question to see what is going the get out of that box
I think SMBW’s feels that way because it’s instrumentation is different, and while it’s cool, I think I agree with you there about liking the one from nsmb more. It just sounds a bit more “Mario-esc” to me.
Among all the videos on SMB Wonder, yours are always the most interesting
WONDER FLOWER I wonder if like you can actually grow bigger just like with the Mega Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros on the DS or maybe like they could like when Mario gets the Wonder Flower and one of the power ups like the Super Mushroom turns into a Mega Mushroom now that would be cool to see
I've seen a few comments with people saying the style doesn't "fit" mario because he's not a "comic book" character, which is a really bizarre conclusion. Yeah Mario isn't a "comic book" character (ignoring the Adventure Comics i guess) but he is *definitively* a cartoon character. --Historically he has been depicted as a traditional cartoon character in promotional, box art, manual illustrations, and the style of this new game really pairs well with that while still feeling fresh.
--Even Mario's origins are rooted in classic cartoons, as the original Donkey Kong for which Mario was created was originally intended to be a Popeye game before Nintendo's license for the IP expired. So gonna be brash and just say this style is probably more fitting for Mario than any artstyle the franchise has ever seen before, certainly better than the NSMB franchise. NSMB was clean ..but it was totally sterilized and aesthetically uninteresting, *THIS* is a visual feast, ..and I am here for it. Hoping future entries in both 2D and 3D really go wild experimenting with different artstyles.
So basically all the animations are smoother, more lively, and kinda goofy in Wonder
Great video man! Keep up the Mario content cause no one does it better!
I love this game alot, I really can’t wait to see it ❤
Mario - and the rest of the playable characters - are just SO adorable in Super Mario Bros. Wonder
the end of the ground pound is so fun to me. all these new animations really make him look alive.
i'm so excited for this game!
At 11:12, the 'piano note sound' is actually coming from marios jump sound and not the hit of the block
I love they completely revamped the look of everything in this game! The new artstyle looks so cool!
For people that say it’s too cartoony just look at wind waker, everyone said the same thing but it was a great game, that’s how I think this is going to be
8:45 Yoshi is a playable character in mario wonder, you can even see in the top right-hand corner he has a character icon alongside Mario's health, indicating a player 2 as yoshi
These new animations and graphics in the new game are so amazing, I can’t wait
Alot of aesthetic differences; good ones. I just love when games have aesthetic animation details like that. This game (I can tell already) is really tops!
I’m excited 😆
He doesn’t even know what is he talking about 1:46
That isn’t a blur effect but a smear effect as a veteran animator I say
Great video
It almost feels similar to Alpha Dream's engine from Dream Team. It's a fresh breath for sure!
Another change was that they seemed to remove points and replaced those with those “Great” and “Wonderful” words.
I can’t wait for this game to come out!
Nice vid
This game has so much personality and i love that
Yeah I agree this game is horrible I don’t understand the love for this game
3:40 Did Mario just react to that falling Koopa? Notice how he looks slightly upwards.
Yeah
The enemies do that too actually
He looks at star coins in NSMB2 and NSMBU
WONDERFLOWER: What if, Mario Odyssey style, you get transformed into an enemy for a section of the level. Sure would explain the Goomba Toad on the cover art.
That Linky Link at the beginning got me 😂
Wonder’s animation looks so fresh
All those new animations are just amazing
gorging myself on these new animations
Everything in this vid is perfect, but what i love is that when mario hits a block, it shows his fist hitting the block, just to confirm that he doesnt just break his head while jumping under a block xd
I hope everything still dances to the beat, loved that about New Super Mario Bros.
