  • Thanks for joining me in the Sewing Room. Last weekend I managed to make up some Summer Pjs and then a quick poncho for after my Elbow Surgery.
I have also a couple of fabrics to show and look back at my School book and retro patterns.
Thanks to Jen from ‪@TodayinJensSewingRoom‬ for starting this #fridaysews .

Great photos Carole, sending prayers for a speedy recovery, but please don't get too anxious to use your are for anything and let it heal. No one wants to have a lingering ache from an old injury. Take care of yourself and we will look forward to your sewing makes, when you are all better. Your photos are wonderful. Someday I would love to visit your part of the world, for now, home is in the heart of the USA.

So fun to see you up and about and feeling well. I love your red top with the gathers. Thanks for showing the pretty fabric you found. My mother had probably every sewing tool on the planet. She had button hole scissors and a button hole cutter, which looks kind of like a chisel. So fun to see the retro patterns. I was able to cut out two tops for me this week. I just put the button holes in the first one and then all I have to do is the hem. Hoping to have them both finished by tomorrow. Have a wonderful week and try to take it easy with your arm.

So good to see you and glad the surgery is over and you are not pushing it so you don't wind up setting yourself back - patience is a virtue, they say! Love the pretty print fabric for the "magic dress" and the knits look so soft and comfortable, too. Yes, the Red Arrow photos were a treat but I also love the countryside photos as well. The Blue Angels usually perform at an air show not far from me in Atlantic City, New Jersey, U.S.A., but they unfortunately suddenly canceled the show in August this year so I am doubly glad to have seen your air show photos. Hope you feel better every day!

Carole, I love that POSH tee! Gorgeous color on you. I just added that Butterick pattern to my list. I've been thinking of you all week and your arm surgery. That poncho is so COZY! I prefer an invisible zipper foot also. I have a button foot but I've never used mine. I'll have to try it. How cool that you found the patterns from when you were 15! True Retro patterns. I've never used buttonhole scissors. I use a blade. Don't worry about responding. A heart is great. I hope you recover soon! ❤❤❤

You look well after your surgery Carole. I hope it’s relatively painless. The buttonhole scissors are fascinating. I do have a very old inherited pair and I wasn’t sure how to use them. I think mine are not ‘sharp’ so probably no longer useable. I’d be fascinated to see a video on them. Love the clothes you made - specially the poncho. It falls very nicely. The doll patterns are usually easier than you think and I’ve had good luck using the shiny plastic side of poppers as eyes for those sorts of things. Less creepy.Good luck with being ‘home alone’ and rapid healing. Trish S

Glad the op went OK. Don't try and do too much too soon. I only discovered the joy of sewing buttons on using my sewing machine a couple of months ago - revelation! My Brother came with the button foot included and I just thought I'd give it a go for a shirt I made. I also looked at some of those buttonhole scissors (made in Sheffield - my home town and famous for steel and cutlery), but in the end decided on a buttonhole cutter - like a small chisel. It works very well. Take care.

So sorry that I did not comment at your video announcing your surgery. You seem to be doing fine and in such good spirits and your brain is on overtime! Love that you shared your notebook, how interesting. I have that poncho pattern and of course you have inspired me to make it. The knickers must have been the talk of the hospital, so cute. You are so sweet I wish I could have a cup of tea with you. The pictures are beautiful. My son traveled to England in April and so enjoyed it and brought me back some Liberty of London fabric ❤. Can you not do handwork? This recovery time is great for planning and dreaming. Hope you are feeling good and get back to that machine in no time!

Glad the surgery is now behind you and I hope you're recovering well. I love the poncho jumper, and a great idea for post surgery. Love the idea of new knickers, I made "hospital pyjamas" for my first ever operation last year then never wore them as by the time I came round it was late and changing was too much of a chore, also a patient nearby had no overnight things as she'd been told she wouldn't need to stay so she was still in her gown anyway.
Love Maiden Castle, as a child we flew kites up at Badbury Rings but now I'm nearer to Maiden Castle. Hope you're back sewing soon (or already :) )

Hi Sarah, I am back sewing again so thank you so much for your wishes. I did very light projects last week though, nothing heavy. So funny you went to the trouble of making Hospital Pjs then never ended up wearing them! That sort of thing would happen to me too.

I’m so glad to hear your surgery went well and you are recuperating, please don’t overdo and injure your arm. Everything can wait until you are better. Great video, as usual. Loved the “Bulls in field” sign! Glad to hear you plan to take it slow after your surgery. Bones do take a long time to heal. Even when they feel good, they’re still fragile. (Retired nurse, here) So don’t rush your recovery. Do it right and you’ll only have to do it once! Sounds a bit like good sewing advice, doesn’t it?
I wanted to let you know that after your last video, I decided to break down and get Simp 8814 (the pants pattern that you and Vivmom rave about) since Joann’s had a $1.99 pattern sale going for Independence Day. Wouldn’t you know, the pattern was discontinued last month! 😩 I was shocked. Let that be a lesson to me NOT to wait to buy something I want! I’m sure I could find it online, but since I’ve retired my finances are very tight, so I won’t be paying $10-15 for a pattern which I SHOULD have bought for $1.99! 😹
Enjoy your “leisure” time with lots of puzzles and books and Netflix! Your sewing will be there waiting when you’re FULLY recovered. 💕

Oh your poor arm. I understood your problem fitting something over it. When i broke my elbow I borrowed tshirts from my husband and son. But because of complications, I ended up wearing a cumbersome bulky brace for many months. Unfortunately it was during the winter in Canada. I ended up shopping at thrift stores for sweaters and tops with large roomy sleeves. I even had to find a winter coat. I also found out the world is very right hand oriented. How fun you have an actual record of the patterns you made! Whenever I find sewing patterns in thrift stores i I always search for any i might have sewn when i was young. And when I do, of course I buy it. My plan is to one day make some kind of collage with them to hang in my sewing room. Your granddaughter will love her birthday doll.

Hi Carole! I have been wondering about your surgery, and worrying, as I do! But I'm glad to hear it's over and you are doing a great job of keeping yourself busy, what a cool Jigsaw!!! That poncho and those PJS look awesome! Don't worry about responding, you deserve some time off, take care of yourself! I love that old sewing book, I wish I had kept mine, I'm sure they made us take notes, but I barely remember.....🤣Get well soon! 💓💓💓

A few videos back you and Izzy did a collaboration on the fold you get on t shirts. I have never had that happen. I have to go the other route and make a small bust adjustment, and for the first time I recall the folds are there on my dress. I’m assuming the pattern requires a dart.

Hi Sandra, I am so sorry to hear about your doggie. How is he/she now? It is always a worrying time when a beloved pet is poorly.

Hi Carol I've been away for a few weeks. Do let yourself heal properly. I wish you well. Ps you don't need to reply, I will be OK with that. Soon you will be back to normal ❤❤

Wow, love that Poncho. How far up the is the side seam sleeve attached? LOL I've got a soar shoulder and that design
would make any cover-up work well.
    Thanks from Canada

Thank you, the only tight bit is the bit from the wrist to the elbow after that it is all really spacious!

@@socarole66 Thanks. I have a poncho pattern I can work with. How many inch up from the bottom hem does
the elbow begin? This is going to be great. Smiling!
