    In mid May 2020 just before my birthday I'm at my parents house in the East San Francisco Bay Area preparing my solo skiff and fishing gear in an attempt to catch my first Chinook (King) Salmon fishing in the Pacific in Shelter Cove on Northern California's Lost Coast in Humbolt county.
    The setup I decided on consisted of a Deep Six Diver to a small triangular green flasher to a crippled anchovy/herring. I had picked up all my gear from Berkeley Marina Sportsman Center. In California fishing regulations require barbless hooks while fishing for salmon and a net to be able to land the salmon and check the gums because Chinook Salmon (legal to keep) have black gums and Coho Salmon (illegal to keep) have silver gums.
    I load my Mercury 6 horsepower four stroke outboard motor into the back of my 2011 Ford F150 and make the 250 mile / 4.5 mile drive through coastal redwoods and fog from Moraga to Shelter Cove.
    I arrive to an empty Shelter Cove boat ramp and proceed to set up my Solo Skiff and launch for an evening fishing session. When I launch it is raining but eventually the rain stops, the water glasses off, and the most amazing sunset colors appear as I make my way back in for the night. After rinsing out my motor with fresh water I keep in a bucket I slept in the shell of my truck that night.
    I wake up at 5am, meditate in the back of my truck, and the am greeted by an incredible sunrise over the King Rang, I talk with the local legend Eric who runs a kayak fishing guide service and he gives me some pointers and advice on salmon fishing as we both wish each other luck and set out for the day.
    I launch my solo skiff just before 6am and make my way about 3 miles to the southwest toward Solo Bank and Old Man's. I fish away from the fleet of boats and kayaks that fish near the red and green buoys closer to the cove.
    I get to Tolo Bank and take out my Avet SX reel on a Daiwa Proteus Rod with the Deep Six Diver on it and throw on a frozen herring. I troll Tolo Bank traveling at 3.5 mph and get my first strike at 9:30am. It is a short Chinook (King Salmon) so I throw it back and continue trolling.
    At 10:00am a nicer fish takes a herring and the fight is on. I bring the fish to color and can see that it is a nice big Chinook and I know I'm using barbless hooks so I focus extra hard and land my first Chinook (King) Salmon of my life.
    I keep trolling and land a short Coho (Silver) Salmon before ending the day by dropping s Shimano Flat Fall squid pattern iron on a Shimano Tranx 500 reel. A couple drops in my iron gets slammed and I pull up a nice big Vermillion (Red) Rockfish.
    I make my way in and land the Solo Skiff at the cove. I am greeted by Eric who is filleting a Salmon that he caught. Eric congratulates me on the catch and takes the most epic photo with me and my first Salmon.
    Thank you to everyone who helped make my first Salmon happen. Life is about the journey and the same goes with fishing. Catching is great but I truly cherish the people and experiences that lead up to the catch! Thank you for watching and there is plenty more on the way. Dream, execute, inspire.

    Best to avoid netting the shakers (and certainly don't let them hit the deck). Once juvenile salmon lose any scales, they won't survive. Just shake the small ones off over the rail without touching them.

    Another great video Mikey. Congrats on getting you Solo Skiff Salmon, nice size rock fish compared to the ones we get here at home. I finally got my first Solo Skiff yesterday, got it on the flylined sardine I told you yesterday I caught along with some Macs. Also got a legal sand bass on a salas6x blue/white jig. All were released. See you out there again soon. I tried calling you on the radio, but it's like not transmitting. Don't know what I did wrong on the set up. I like my older radio, but it's hard to use when the screen goes black.

      @@SDFishandSips Monterey video was an excellent video also. If I may ask, when squidding, you mentioned 70 feet depth, go anywhere to 70 feet and start, or is there any particular spot after you launch?

    • @SDFishandSips
      @SDFishandSips  3 года назад

      Hey road. At that specific time the squid were at 70’ depth in that area. Since then they have gone away. I’ve caught squid in 80’ of water further south in San Onofre and La Jolla. The squid are a little tricky but it helps to hear from people where they are or see commercial squid boats with lights in the area. Hopefully the squid come back. I’m dreaming of a winter time squid bite in San Diego soon!

      OEX in San Diego (Kearney Mesa) is the local dealer. I was on a waiting list and it took about 2 months. All kayak, solo skiff and boat manufacturers are behind and often have waiting list due to the Covid19 issues. If you want anything get on the list cause it's only likely to get longer on a lot of brands.

      Correct. OEX is the local San Diego dealer. You have to go through a dealer and can't get it direct from Solo Skiff. My understanding is they are backed up right now and struggling to get new Solo Skiffs to San Diego to satisfy the high demand.
