Thanks for the video, very important and thanks also for the super beetle info too! Paint: ever considered flat or satin and gloss black two tone? ...just sayin'.
Oddly enough, somebody else brought that up, they seen a bus painted that way. I’m gonna have to look on Google. Thank you so much for being here, my friend.
I carried a scissor jack and a 4x4 cut to length to use as a jack stand in my 64 bug. I have my Craftsman jack stands and they are 3 ton stands and i have never purchased the Harbor Freight stands that were falling down.
I couldn’t remember during filming. His jackstands were falling down, yes, it was definitely harbor freight! I like carrying my scissor jack especially to the junkyard. Makes it a little easier for me. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment.
Boy, this video is as controversial as the oil debate. The standard issued VW jack works perfect and as you mentioned you need to have a solid frame. But I used it only for changing a flat tire on the road, if that's all you have. For shop work like pulling the engine, another debate would be which end do you lift first? I always used a floor jack and lifted the front end first. Again on a solid frame as you mentioned. Then lifting the rear to keep a level balance, I use one of the do not lift points you pointed out, so I'm not trying to lift one side of the car while the front end is on jack stands. I lifted from the engine to get the height to put the jack stands on the torsion rails needed to be able to slide the engine out of the engine area and sideways under the fender well area. I still use the floor jack when removing the engine, I count on the jacks plate to swivel when pull the engine loose from the mounts and transmission shaft. Wiggle, wiggle. I had no luck using a motorcycle lift for this. Because some motorcycle lifts only rise up to 11 inches and some go 33 inches. I got the cheap lift....wrong one. A floor jack also has limits, which mine happens to lift to 36 inches, and then with a flat board on the jack I get an extra half inch. I tried using the motorcycle lift to get the engine out, but had no luck because of no wiggle, wiggle play. Using the motorcycle lift and lifting the engine to mount the engine on a stand or close to the stand's mounting height helps. I would like to see your experience on the Motorcycle lift. Great video and on a subject that no one has covered that I know of. I think this is helpful, especially for someone new to working on beetles or any vehicle, safety is important. (HF) had the faulty jack stands and might have been corrected by now.
Thanks for posting my friend! I have to put that motorcycle jack together, I got a little behind here. I remember using the factory jackpot on my 68 when I was a young kid. Of course, just to change a tire like you said. But everything was brand new. I just tried to caution people that don’t know any better now,and end up with a little incident. Lol I hope you’re doing well my friend.
I'd like to see a video on floor jack maintenance. I have one that doesn't lift all the way any longer and another that lifts ok but bleeds off pressure without unscrewing the handle.

Yes to trying the flat black, and also a yes for the jack maintenance. My dad showed me how to do it when I was a kid, but I honestly don’t even remember 😂
I like the two tone red and beige look myself. If not for the factory paint status of my '72 I would do that scheme on mine. I just can't bring myself to get rid of the happy yellow. Don't go with black, especially if Heather doesn't like it. Save that for another vehicle.
Thank you, my friend! I really like the two-tone idea. I just seen that sat in black and it drove me crazy for a short period lol thank you so much for always being here.
Thank you so much for chiming in! Yes, I would have to agree with the red and cream, I think Heather is on some thing. And yes, those jackstands are very nice. I think I’m going to get a second set for the front.
Great topic and great video! I picked the same jacking spots on my super beetle convertible as the standard super - as you showed, so I feel better now. lol It's always good to get confirmation. One point on the jack stands, is that they now REQUIRE the extra pin on the lever operated stands. It might be rare, but the ones you showed under the front, did not appear to have the extra pin (just imagine laying underneath and accidentally kicking one of the levers - down it goes).
I didn’t know that most of the stands came with a pin now. Which is a nice addition. The ones that were under the front of the car, I have had for quite some time. They do make me nervous. I’ll be honest. I should probably get a second set that are more safe. Thank you so much for chiming in.
Talking about motorcycle jacks; did you see Mike Fn’s video on the little carts he made to wheel around the motors? Fantastic! I like your original two tone scheme for the car.
good video my friend. safety is a big deal for working on a car.great explanation on everything. i guess that heather wants the two tone and you the mat black, i feel a big dilemma here lol.
Thank you so much, my friend! Safety is the number one thing! Especially when we do the things we do on cars. I hope you are doing well, my friend! I think we’re going to be staying with the two-tone lol.
Matte black (satin black) would look amazing with a 2 tone in red. Cream would be a safer option but I say step out of your comfort zone and go with matte! ( but I would let heather make the final decision 😂lol) that’s the ultimate safer option lol love you guys 23:01
Much love, my friend! Thank you so much for the kind words! Heather is insistent on the red and dark cream, so I guess I better go with that to be safe. Thank you so much for being here.

Hey Slade! I have some questions about wheels. I'm looking to turn my 72 into an overland/road trip adventure rig and want to replace the beat up aftermarket wheels currently on it. Im aware class 11 has some pretty solid wheels but my question is if they're the best for about 75/25 road/gravel mix. I ask because it seems rally cars all run some pretty reliable gravel wheels that are similar but differ from the class 11 sets, and with the regulation of the 11s whether or not they're the best they could be. What are the advantages of running a VW specific wheel as apposed to modifying the bug for some wrc type rally wheels. Thanks! (I've been looking at a set of BRAID WINRACE TA for example)
Oh my, I wished I could be helpful my friend, but I don’t think I can be. I’ve always ran stock wheels, sometimes stock wheels, a little wider, and eight rims. I have never did what you suggested. But if you do post on the Facebook community, Slades, VW community. There’s a lot of rally guys on there and stuff like that would definitely chime in.
Thanks, Slade! One question: I have a winch in my garage moving on a beam. I was thinking of using that in order to lift the rear of my 1302 to help out getting the engine out. Should I use the rear bumper mounting points to lift the rear once the engine is out? Thanks again!
Thank you for chiming in I truly appreciate it! Heather is insistent on the red and dark green so the two-tone will be! Thank you so much for being here.
Sorry, Slade, I'm just not a fan of the satin paint. But, if you can convince Heather, more power to you. She'll call it in on a later favor, know that for a fact, but good luck.
