For a channel called Tabletop Ready you sure do have a lot of parade ready tutorials. Good stuff though, can't believe a storm host silver edge highlight improved my custodes so much.
Highlights really make a huge difference to our miniatures. This will be written on my tombstone ha. Canoptek alloy is also a good highlight colour for gold if you didn’t want it to be so silver
Late to the party, but this is an amazing tutorial. just picked up the custodes combat patrol, so I’ll be following this video when I crack on with them 👍
I would say you turning up as it’s getting good. Perfect timing. The combat patrols are great boxes and I hope you enjoy building and painting your custodes 😃 enjoy the process. There’s no rush
binged all your videos yesterday, fantastic tutorials! i am curious thought, what recipe would you use for the Aquilan Shield Purple robes, leather, and plumes?
thank you :) I would go through the same steps as the reds. Khorne red = naggaroth night Mephiston red = cereus purple evilsunz scarlet = gene stealer purple Squig orange = slaanesh grey ungor flesh = decals lilac the leather can also be done the same, just choose the tone of brown you want and swap out the rhinox and Squig orange
That cloth part was such an eye opening bit for me. I did it kind of the other way: Khorne as the base, nuln oil the recesses, come back with the mephiston. It looked a little messy at the end, probably cause I didn't do "less is more" XD, but I'll definitely try it this way and see if it helps.
Man this is just awesome, incredible job really ! Is there ANY WAY you could paint a calladius and a telemon one of these days? I know this is asking a lot but all the caladius painting guides I see are made with air brushes and I don't have one nor do I have the budget for one 😭
Thank you. Honestly there would be nothing new in that video that isn’t in this one. I would use the same techniques, paints and steps. It’s just a bigger model. Extra things I may consider would be to layer the gold back up with retributor after the wash but that’s about it. I believe in yah 😀
Michael, having been a subscriber from the very early days I must say you continue to deliver, the quality of your work is improving which is really saying something, this mini looks incredible!
Brilliant, good look. take your time and don't worry too much about being perfect with it. I spent 6 months just highlighting space marines as practice haha
I'm not sure I understood the difference between retributor primer and retributor pot. Basically I can't use the pot to cover the missing spots after priming it with the spray because it won't end up being the same color? Edit: sorry had to edit the comment two times
So the primer is from a spray can but I also use the same colour but from the pot. They are not an exact match in colour and so I just suggest using the retribution armour from the pot as a first layer
@@TableTopReadyRUclips ooooh I think I get it. So first I should prime my figurines with the retributor gold spray and THEN use the retributor gold pot as a second coat (layer), before starting to paint them with the other steps of the tutorial correct? 😉 Thank you btw
First time watching, wish I had this video last year when I painted up my custodes army but will be using some of these techniques for future additions. Really enjoy your instructional style.
Welcome. I’m really glad you found my Channel 😁 it’s all about the process, you don’t know what you don’t know until you know it. Hopefully some of what I show in my videos can help you paint more than just custodes 👍🏻
very good tutorial and a nice clean model at the end. Looks fantastic. I tend to use a varnish before I wash, it breaks up the surface tension and helps the was to flow into the recesses. Subbed to the channel, looking forward to seeing more. The Emperor protects!
Thank you very much. Varnishing before a wash is a great way to go. I try and stay true to methods that the painting team at games workshop would do. Welcome to the channel and I’m super glad you want to join me on this journey 😃
Thanks for great tutorial. Would you apply the same technique on the vehicles like land raider or rhino for adeptus custodes ? Or for example would you dont cover all retributor armor with wash just in the recess or mayby apply retributor armour after the wash ?
What paint should I use if I want to have purple cloth instead of red? I am making my first "army" (kill team) ever and I really like the Aquilan shield colorscheme:)
I would go through the same steps as the reds. Khorne red = naggaroth night Mephiston red = cereus purple evilsunz scarlet = gene stealer purple Squig orange = slaanesh grey ungor flesh = decals lilac
Great video man! Really easy to follow and a good style. Seeing how you even do the sub assemblies is wicked aswell! Quick Q, Are the non-pinned parts stuck to the painting handles (wood?) with super glue?
Is the old formula of reikland fleshshade preferable to the newer one if I can’t get the glossy to mix in? Awesome work. I want to use a lot of this and I think it will be very helpful. Thank you.
This tutorial made me pull the trigger on a 40k project for the first time in years! (Regularly paint other minis) but do you have any advice for the liberator gold stage, I feel I’m having a hard time noticing it over top of the retributor armor. In the video it seems much or stark? Is it possible my pot of liberator gold is old? Thanks for any help!
The liberator gold isn’t too different from retributor armour, its just used mainly for interest. Make sure to apply it after the wash. I think as well it’s more noticeable in the video because of the lighting I have. But now it’s just on display with relatively normal lighting it’s not as vibrant, so it to worry.
Really good! How do you get the spray paint to not be so cakey? I tried and it caked up like a bakery :( shook it well, light coats, about eight inches from the model, and it just wrecked my guys :(
I couldn’t say what the problem is unless I saw what you are doing. Maybe it’s the temperature of the can? It works best when its at least room temperature. As well if it’s too cold outside the paint doesn’t evaporate and can end up quite thick. I have a tutorial on undercoating. Maybe there is something in that.
haha oh dear oh dear I recommend watching my painting your first miniatures and assembly videos to get a good idea for the basics. if i was you I would get some Retributor armour Spray and the base colours. so retributor armour, Mephiston Red, Abaddon Black and Iron Hands Steel with these just focus on painting the base colours across the miniature. This will give you plenty of practice and you'll feel more confident. you can then add your shades and after you can add highlights when your ready. take your time with it, you can't expect to achieve what I've done in this tutorial stariht away :P good luck and have fun with it
If you wanted a colder gold, I would probably use liberator gold, maybe even over a leadbelcher spray as well. I would still do the same wash though but you could thin it down with some lahmian medium so it doesn’t effect the tone too much
I think you may be asking about if its differen to the pot colour? yes the sprays don't tend to be the same as the colours in the pot so I would always paint a base colour first
Not really, there shouldn't be a problem just using just Reikland. If you really wanted to, you can ad a smidgen of 'ardcoat to recreate that gloss though

you could just stick to the new riekland fleshshade, it doesn't need to be glossy
@@TableTopReadyRUclips Thats true, I forgot I may end up varnishing it down anyway! I might just use the older reikland than to get more depth
