Yeah like you I wouldn't listen to much of it but it is completely true how you mentioned about muscle weakness. Depending on which muscle it can give a whole slew of issues. I think of course there is no "forbidden" posture. however, there is such a thing as a default, and if a kid finds it easier to W sit, because he can't stabilise with hips externally rotated, it might be worth it to remind him every once in a while to adapt that sitting position without making a big deal out of it.
If your kid has hip dysplasia, w sitting may prevent proper hip joint development around femur head which may cause dislocated hips or osteoarthiritis in hips in the future. It is a serious condition and may require an operation called asetabular osteotomy. Most of the kids grow out of it but it does not mean that w sitting is harmless. It depends on the condition that your kid is in. Calling this as a myth is an overstatement.
So many people don't know about the W shaped sitting position. 3 benefits you'd get in your adult years if you were sitting in a W shaped a lot as a child: 1) 2) 3) Liu Kang's bicycle kick

W sitting is quite stable and requires less balance and core strength required for walking and balance during daily tasks such as getting dressed. This is why it is discouraged in small children during early development as it can cause physical development delay.
Fair enough but can you perhaps expand on this with regards to ice hockey goalies who utilize the butterfly?
