Lucy: the player is figuring it out for the first time.
Maximus: player is testing out what they can get away with.
The Ghoul: player has learned that they can get away with *anything*.
That synchronized head tilt, when they said "One of the good Vaults" was gold.
Maximus was raised in a world with low to non education. The brotherhood raised him and gave him only specific knowledge, and not all they really know.
Lucy had a good education, specialized in specific Vault Tec Ideas. She knew nothing about how the world works outside her vault.
The Gouhl had a "normal" education ... and 200 years to adapt and survive.
I found the classroom scene fascinating. Almost every Vault has a classroom, in most games. And they always have an American flag and teach American history. But this classroom had the NCR flag and taught NCR history.
While Shady Sands was destroyed, the NCR is confirmed to endure beyond it, and these people don't see themselves as Americans carrying on the legacy of the USA in their weird Vault Cults like every other Vault. They see themselves as *Californians* carrying on the legacy of the NCR in their weird Vault Cult.
And also how Lucy real realised reclamation day, repopulate of earth, everything she thought her vault is about either a huge misunderstanding... or massive lie...
Ahh Californians thinking they're the center of the country wanting all of it to be California. Looks like Fallout mimics real life 🤣😂
What's really interesting is that when Lucy holds up the NCR flag is the first time we hear the iconic Fallout motif. The showmakers waited six episodes to drop that one. They're really willing to let the show build slowly.
@@nukiesduke6868well in this universe, it was Californians who created a real nation and no other part of the vanquished country has.
@@PaulGuy Specifically it's the version of the main theme in New Vegas
If you listen closely as Cooper is walking down the stairs in his house, somebody comments about the extra-large poster of "A Man and his Dog", and you hear Cooper saying that he used his own dog.
The "President of the Govermint" is named Sorrel Booker. Fat man that wears a white suit and white bowtie. In the late 80's a TV show, "The Dukes of Hazzard", had a character named Boss Hogg. He was the corrupt man, that controlled Hazzard County. Fat man that wears a white suit and white bowtie. the actor that played Boss Hogg, was Sorrell Booke.
@19:20 Nerdy joking about Moldaver being the Doctor, and the show a DW cross-over. There is a funny easter egg in the game Fallout 1, where you may encounter the TARDIS in the wastelands.
There's a couple in NV
Clarus' face when Maximus says "... like a big pimple and then it pops" 😂🤣😂🤣
Solid gold
From Alberta. Can confirm. We had no idea what we were talking about, but were constantly making jokes about 'humping' when we were 8. Most of us were more familiar with the ideas than even we thought- farm animals aren't exactly subtle - but the light bulb that 'humans are animals' didn't turn on immediately.
Also from Alberta. Also can confirm. Grew up near a town named Sexsmith. Constant jokes.
The Vault was built with the 'intake trap' in the hospital. BEFORE the war. It was DESIGNED that way. Think about what that means in light of 'The Good Vaults'......
There are no good vaults under capitalism.
in my headcanon, the tooth that max was shot with is his own... the one he sold in episode one.. they've been on enough side quests for the tooth to be in the Fiend's possession when they meet on the bridge...
This thought occurred to me as well.
I like it...
Brilliant
That's the type of random-ass coincidence that's perfect for Fallout! 😂
Unfortunately it's stated that it's "a rotten tooth" so it's unlikely to have been his own. 😞
@@rodentnolastname6612 Why? max could have sold a rotten tooth...
the brotherhood of steel doesn't strike me as having a good dental plan for their disciples...
"That guy nose something..."
I was looking for this comment! LOL
That hit with the Fallout theme and the NCR flag is one of my favorite moments in the show
They only had one shot at using the theme and they did not miss
@@pabloc8808 they definitely used V.A.T.S. hitting that one...
I thought it was the Fallout 4 theme. Didn't know they were so similar
Definitely the Fallout 4 theme
@@AshenVanguard it’s more accurately the “fallout” theme. Kinda like how all elder scrolls make a new rendition of the same theme for every game. Same theme different styles in fallout too
Of note; the movie poster for Coop's film "A Man and His Dog" is a reference to an older post-apocalyptic film "A Boy and His Dog" from which the Fallout games borrowed HEAVILY from 😀
A boy and his dog is based on an actual sci-fi movie, which was itself based on a post-disaster short story that appeared in Analog magazine.
Harlan Ellison’s “A Boy and His Dog” (written work and film adaption) take place in 2024, by the way.
Thé weird thing about Maximus is that he’s not dumb or without skill. He was not really ready to be a Squire, and knew nothing of what he should to be a Knight. But we get two examples of him being a *really* good shot, and decisive at it too. And the stupid decisions he makes really stem from being sheltered and restricted to the domain of the Brotherhood. Max and Lucy are smart and ignorant in different ways, so they fit well together as a team.
alot of him is also internalizing insecurities so he acts stoic and silent to hide being afraid, uncertain or ignorant about things. Also alot of the dumb things seem more his insecurities not him being shelters. He has a power trip because he finally is not bullied and has power. He acts overwhelmed when having to hide his power play because he is invoking an authority the BoS would take away from him
That was Lucy’s finger that he stitches on. You can briefly see him putting it into his jacket pocket in episode 4.
Maximus IS intelligent, he just has a VERY specific knowledge base, centered around just the specific things the Brotherhoods upper echelon wants their rank and file to know. Presumably, as you climb the ranks, ESPECIALLY if you're on the Cleric, rather than the Knight, side of things, you gain access to more and more knowledge, but it's still very much a CONTROLLED access, doled out by those higher in rank than you.
I thought the show did an EXTREMELY good job of showing both Maximus and Lucys specific strengths and weaknesses. A lot of them aren't apparent until you've watched the show a few times (or watched a shitton of reactions), but they're definitely there.
That's what pisses me off so much about the people shitting on the show after watching just an episode or two, or only watching it through once. It gets SO much deeper, and exponentially better, on repeated viewings.
Though, I do blame Amazon partly for that. If they'd released it on a weekly schedule, that would have given people time to digest each episode, given reactors and breakdown channels a chance to pull it apart, and just generally allowed it to breathe. While my inner Fallout fanboi LOVED being able to binge it, it still would have been a better overall experience to have it parsed out over a couple months.
Remember the family that was in the ad - they were scientists studing the affects of radiation on humans.
I like the symbolism of Lucy getting a ghoul finger as the surface inevitably taints her purity slightly but fails to change her core self, and the ghoul gains lucy's finger as he gains a little of his lost humanity back from his contact with her.
the Vault 4 overseer is played by Chris Parnell, who i recognize from Saturday Night Live, also the voice of Jerry on Rick and Morty
I dont remember who said it but i remember one reactor say the comedy in this show is funny because of how serious everyone in the show is. No one in the show is cracking jokes or trying to be funny. They are just letting how different everything is or how people respond to things in this world be the humor.
Maximus saying "when you say hot shower, what do you mean exactly?" cracks me up for some reason every time.
Not wanting to spoil anything, but Nerdy’s wild swings at where the plot it going almost guarantee that at least one thing will be right 😂. But for sure hold on to your butts, the last two episodes just start piling on both the fanservice and the plot reveals
one of the few reactors that actually put it together on the gulpers!
Ghoul's backstory is fascinating :)
*FACEinating
The size of Ella Purnell's eyes never fails to amaze.
This show genuinely has some of the most layered and quality writing I've seen in a long time.
This Episode's writing is a masterpiece, in light of what happens in the next one (no spoilers). For those who have seen them both, look at what the episode does (and doesn't) explicitly say. All the subtle details are right in front of your face the whole time.
Its such a small bit of him, but I love any Dallas Goldtooth I can get! If you also enjoyed him in his small supportive role as Coop's friend that brings him to the Moldaver cult you can see a lot more of him in Reservation Dogs
One of my only memories from when I was a kid was my friend showing what she thought she knew about sex, using barbie dolls lol
Dr Who fun fact: The Tardis does briefly appear in Fallout 1. It phases out as you enter an area
that moment when lucy looks at the ncr flag and the fallout theme starts playing... easily one of the most emotional tv moments ever. up there with scrubs "where do you think we are" and captain picards lute
24:50 "This guy Nose something" 😊
Nice to see Dallas Goldtooth in a serious role. Not that he's bad at comedy, he is FANTASTIC at comedy, but nice to see he has range. He's great in "Reservation Dogs" (not ReseVOIR Dogs).
I dont think ive ever seem clarus make that many emotions,
she must really like this
That management enthusiast from Vault-tech brings to mind the 3rd colony ark from Adams' "Life, the universe, and everything". The one full of useless parasites that the doomed planet sent off into the void to be rid of them.
And then they all died off from an unsanitized telephone.
"Dirty Jobs" FTW...
When Lucy lifted the flag, The music that started playing, is the same music played over the opening menu, of the "Fallout 4" game.
The awkward conversation is like an easter egg for the type of out-of-the-blue relationship conversations you have in the game with companions, you go from someone liking you hacking a computer, to suddenly sleeping together with 2 or 3 exchanges of dialogue,...you can even end up sleeping with a robot in the Far Harbour DLC by being a little too friendly in conversation.
"Keeps out the rads.... and the reds."
Clarus: "Hey!" >:(
Moment when she picked up flag and fallout 4 theme played gave me goosebumps
15:00 it's essentially a flightsuit, and I believe it's a standard issue bodysuit for piloting Power Armor.
16:02 Anyone else worried that it's *_200-YEAR-OLD_* caviar?!! I mean.... where are they getting the fish from? 😁😁
Unless..... 23:33 it's *_GULPER_* caviar?? 😬😬
@evilwelshman Bingo
Everything else you find is 200 years old so why not.
"The future of humanity comes down to one thing... Management" - your hell, and mine Nerdy, your hell and mine..
"The rads ... and the reds" LOL
14:20 Clarus: "He cannot be that dumb." Maximus: "Hold my popcorn . . ."
Yes, he can be just that dumb. There seems to be a growing consensus that Maximus is the kind of low-intelligence, high-luck build that could be so much fun in the earlier Fallout games.
Maximus has a 4 in int…
The Ghoul has a 4 in int…
He’s not low intelligence though. And he definitely has high Agility and Endurance (he’s a crack shot with a 10mm pistol, maybe he’s got the Gunslinger perk?). But narratively he’s led a sheltered and restricted life in the Brotherhood, so he’s lacking some kinds of knowledge and experience, and is emotionally much younger than his age would suggest.
@@wisemoon40 He’s wasteland Lucy in the sense that he just doesn’t have a lot of “real” world experience. He should receive the same grace she does for the moments of naivety
IMO, Moldavers longlife is explained when Lucy goes into the lab, CRYO.
When Lucy picked up the NCR flag and the theme music came on, that gave me the chills. Made me reinstalled Fallout New Vegas. I am sure the NCR will play a much bigger role in season 2.
"the night is dark, and full of terrors." great sign off, there.
The reactions at 9:56 were in perfect sync and I find it hilarious
It is so funny The Ghouls shows Lucy's finger on his own hand, Well it has lots of muscle memory shooting rifles.
This episode is crazy good
For the most part to me , it feels like Maximus is street smart while Lucy is book smart , maximus knows how certain people are and what types of people can't be trusted while Lucy is sheltered a bit naive and too trusting of everyone basically sheltered from everything
Enjoy all you two do. I know you have more than you need for content and schedule. But to add to you options Silo is another vault based book trilogy with a first season in the books.
6:47 the disbelieve down spyral as the big poping pimple is discussed is amazing
Cleaning up vomit ain’t fun but it’s a sign of love. That you don’t mind the vomit because you love each other that much. Like I did for my late brother Tivo 🐶
“Do the thumb thing, it’s what you’re famous for” Poor Coop
24:50 "This guy NOSE something"
badum tss
So with the 3 characters of Maximus, Lucy, and the Ghoul being representations of player characters, and this coming from an RPG game series, an iconic one at that, imagine they all have stat sheets. Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck, ie S.P.E.C.I.A.L "stats." Maximus is a low intelligence character. Like, comically low. And I'm not sure how much lower Charisma you can get than "Do you wanna make my &*@! explode now?", with Strength and Endurance as high stats. Lucy is probably high Intelligence and Agility. The Ghoul, I think has mostly max stats, since he has 200 plus years of experience. I have a feeling they all have high really Luck, though.
Also Nerdy, your reaction to the "..the end of the world, is,. a product.." perfectly captures my reaction each time I hear it too, because you can feel a certain truth
Wait !!! Could the caviar Be the baby Gulpers ? Thus being the reason they still have a couple of pregnant women in ice?😮
In game terms, Maximus has ridiculous low stats in Intelligence and Perception, but insane high Luck.
He did notice those fiends drawing and took them both out. I would say low social perception (charisma)
Given how much Maximus gets beaten up (and shot) but gets up and keeps going, I'd say he's got a lot of points in Endurance as well.
16:38 Chills...
New Califorina Republic is one goverment.
I love how Clarus' entire body just reacts at times. 😊😊
Axolotl indeed. They do have a rather unique ability making them perfect to incorporate into Fallout universe as a research subject.
What you have to remember is that Vault 4 was for testing radiation on human dna and was specifically for scientists, hence the very nice food, fancier duds, and what not. Also the weirdness and testing.
matt berry!!!!!!
Idk, 6 is super early to know about that stuff. I don't think I ever heard other kids talking about sex in school until I was in middle school. Then again I grew up in Ohio which is borderline Bible belt territory.
When the cyclops guy appeared all I heard in my head was "But what about all the kids that look up to you, do you have a message for them?"
Considering the state of sex ed in the world today, imagine how horrible it would be after such a catastrophic event and being raised in what amounts to a cult! I think he handled the idea of intercourse very well!
Don't skip to it, Nerdy, but when you reach New Vegas, after you finish the main quest, there's an amazingly fun mod for a fresh playthrough. It's called Who Vegas, and it let's you find, learn to control, and adventure in your own TARDIS.
There's a Christmas Special and everything.
24:00 guess where the caviar came from?
I couldn't help but keep imagining Jerry, the dad from Rick and Morty, talking to Lucy in Vault 4 lol
I hope you both play Fallout 3, New Vegas, and/or 4. You can also play co-op Fallout 76!
"If you vomit, I'm not cleaning it up." "I wouldn't ask you to" - Have you guys never had to clean up another person's fluids? What innocent, sheltered people you are.
Your parents changed between 3,500 and 5,000 diapers for you, to get you to where you are now. Think about that.
6:28 that's probably the least weird thing said in this scene.
6:36 just wait, it gets worse.
6:41 this scene is just so wonderfully weird. I love reactors reaction to it. Yours are probably my favourite so far, Clarus eyes were even bigger than Lucys!
9:54 the synchronized head turn! nice touch!
17:06 It's interesting how many goes to orgy right away!
21:28 I'm surprised the "flame mother" mention flies over everyones head...
21:34 That is a very good question!
21:58 Try that one tonight Nerdy!
> I'm surprised the "flame mother" mention flies over everyones head...
it flew over mine 100%. What's that a reference to?
@@Ryuu44 oh, not a reference. it's just that we learn about the title from the "president" and then they say it in the ritual, but it's only when the face on the flag is revealed that people understand. Don't think I've seen any reactor catch that.
Can’t be a Doctor Who crossover Fallout has actors and a story and so far hasn’t insulted its fans.
There’s already been a Fallout/Doctor Who crossover in the first game where you can encounter the Tardis briefly
You see a lot of that in people who served the military for 20+ years or long prison sentences. They get so used to the structure they had that once they leave they don't really adjust as well as someone whose been in for a short time. I think what makes this series so good is that the people working on it are passionate fans of Fallout. They want to do the best and give the feelings the games do. Amazon could have easliy just thrown any crew together but because Todd Howard was involved. Makes a huge difference.
I think you would like Dead Boy Detectives. It is set in the Sandman Universe. Also, it's very gay. I apologize if that was the wrong case use of gay.
Dead Boy Detectives

I know what you mean about the Emmys, but Walton Goggins deserves one . . .
I Love Lucy! X^D
THIS was the episode I was waiting for you to react to lol. Maximus is my fave.
Both of you seemed confused at the "Hollywood Forever Club", in a Nuclear war there is no Hollywood, or any other group.
Clarus' reaction and facial expressions during that "You wanna have sex?" scene were fucking hilarious.
Well, now I know how to get Nerdy into my cult. Caviar and weird sex stuff! 😂😂😂
Can't wait for your reaction for the rest of episodes till last one! Love your reaction Nerdy 😘
6?
No.
8 tho?
Yes, similar situation-Knowing sex is a thing but having wrong and weird ideas about it.
By 9 or 10, our school system took us on a field trip to a newly built health plaza, (where one of our hospitals is but also had surrounding health centric buildings, including some educational halls,) where doctors gave a sex ed presentation.
Do they still do that?
I unfortunately do not think so, (Florida has taken serious hits to our education system-As a trans person with a degree in English who had been actively studying for and taking teaching exams, the fact that the only reason trans and nonbinary people are not banned from teaching here is a federal judge ruled against my governor and legislature is frightening, and has lead me to start studying to take teaching exams accepted in other states instead of continuing to pursue a career in education here.
So I would be surprised if they still did that.
I mean, by the time I was in high school our health class instructors had to preface everything during the ‘sex ed’ portion with “abstinence is the only form if birth control that is 100% effective”.)
It just works!
Goosey Lucy.
Maximus is street smart where as lucy is intellectual but naive. Its easy to say stuff like he seems clueless, but he also pegged those two people on the bridge as dangerous and dispatched them both while Lucy stood there looking confused.
Fallout 3 has a settlement called the Republic of Dave run by Dave of course just him and his wives and children, In fallout anyone can be president.
Good reaction the last few minutes were deeply uncomfortable
Where did they get the Caviar from?
Preserved from before the war. Same as with all the Deviled eggs and Blamco Mac and Cheese. Full of chemicals so they’ll always be edible.
from Aunt Sally ; )
"This is a weird thing to learn at 9pm."
Also kindof a weird thing to learn about in that way at 8 years old, bud.
almost there .
#DefinitelyNotACult Wow, I use that hashtag too often.
going to be fun watching the next one with you
Hello! I wanted to make an audio suggestion. Whenever you touch or bump your desk, it sends a huge bassy rumble through my subwoofers. This sound is probably inaudible unless you have a subwoofer but it can quite loud for your viewers with subs. It can be remedied a couple of ways. First, you can use a shock mount. I don’t know what kind of mic you’re using but you might google if there is a shock mount you can buy for it. Alternatively, you could put a 50 Hz high pass filter on the mic audio when editing your videos. This would roll off all that low end energy without affecting the way your voice sounds. Thank you! Keep up the great content!
Hey, Nerdy and Clarus, y'all show up to my place with some oysters and see how I react 😘
(I don't like oysters, but we can still hang out)
6? I was clueless.
