In the game there were some explanation, that the BFG 10K has some Argent coils (or something like that), which amplifies the Argent projectile of the BFG 9K. It reminds me to a thermonuclear weapon, which starts with a fission bomb, and that ignites the fusion bomb.

Some notable observations: - The BFG 9000 by Doom 2016 is actually nearly as big as Doomguy himself, playing into the joke of calling it the Big Fucking Gun despite the actual acronym being Blast Field Generator. - The 9000 in 2016 and Eternal now act like the 10K one in Quake, where instead of it firing off trace rays that are impossibly large, it instead now becomes a seeking energy ball of death that seeks to overload any biological tissue with immense energy that would've otherwise provided a nice explosion. - The BFG 10K in Eternal practically just wrote off any chance of Quake canon making it to Doom, as the 10K instead seems to be a weapons platform that the 9K is installed upon to be used as a firing mechanism, rather than it being its own weapon entirely. - The BFG in Doom 3 seems to be what the Plasma Rifle was designed around in Doom 2016, which was actually pretty neat. It's actually my favorite iteration of the plasma rifle, despite how dirty they did that gun in 2016 by essentially making it weaker than other auto rifles like *insert triple-triple-barreled Chaingun here* and *insert Micro Missle H. How I Think The BFG 10k Works In DOOM Eternal: It Uses the BFG 9k, But Adds More Ammo To It, Making It Fire A Laser Instead Of A Ball, And Then The Barrel Amplifies It Exponentially By Adding MORE POWER To The Laser. In Doing All This, It Becomes Extremely Dense And Concentrated Thanks To The Barrel, Making It Lose Most Of Its Arcing As The Energy Travels At Nearly The Speed Of Light And Lighting Only Travels At 1/3rd Of The Speed Of Light, Which Means Its Sheer Speed Is Causing It To Arc Back Onto Itself Or Maybe Even Be Just Going Too Fast For Air To Ionize To The Proper Level For Arcing. By What It Was Seen, It Hit The Core Of Mars, Mars Has A Surface Area Of 55.91 Million Square Miles, Now A Hole To A (Now) Molten Core Is Not Good, As Empty Space Will Try Its Hardest To Fill The Void, Which Means The Center Of The Planet Is Slowly Emptying (Which Means By The Time The DOOMSlayer Teleports Away, Its Collapsing In On Itself), If We Give An Estimate That The Hole Is Around 15% Of The Surface (Surface Meaning The Total Amount Of Distance Of Area That Is Accessible), Then That Means The Hole Is 8.3 Million Miles Long, Or, About As Big As Russia, Alaska, Texas, Sweden, Finland, Norway, And California All Combined Let That Kind Of Power Sink In For A Moment, That's 72% Of All Dry Land On Earth, And Already Dry Land Makes Up Only 30% Of Earth
The Quake II BFG startup sound has always been my favorite. It has that trumpety klaxon police siren ramp up that tells you that something powerful is building up & exiting your weapon into a giant ball of "smart" green plasma, because it knows who to touch with its plasmic tendrils to kill & who not to touch.
Something fun about Quake 3's BFG was that the projectile could bounce if you modified the code. I believe it was as simple as adding EF_BOUNCE to the weapon entry. Also worked for the Rocket Launcher and Plasma Gun, and made amazing traps in archways.
I know you might not like putting "Inspired Weapons" But here's a Fact of an Inspired Weapon. Half-Life's First Expansion 'Opposing Force' made by Gearbox Software in 1999 took some inspirations of the BFG and use it for 'The Displacer Cannon' which acts like a Tau Cannon and BFG 9000 with the Fire option that Destroys any Enemy near the Range. But it has a Alt fire where it Can Teleport you any Place (Including Xen) with the Right trigger.
The bfg seem to be grouped into 3 types: tracer, tendril, and explosive. Tracer is the classic hitscan bfg where you shoot it and one or more tracers get fired out (Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 64, Doom comic, Doom RPG, and Doom Eternal) Tendril is the quake/modern bfg where you fire a projectile that zaps nearby enemies(quake 2, doom 3, doom 2016, doom eternal, and rage 2) Explosive is the quake 3 bfg where the bfg is just an aim and shoot for big explosions gun (quake 3, doom 2005, doomannihilation, and rage)
Let’s all take the moment to appreciate the fact that rage 2’s bfg looked like it came from a fragment of heck, and argent energy (the red lightning) around it
I had no idea there was a bfg in Quake or Rage. The Rage 2 is honestly my favorite now besides Classic Doom. I wish they had made the Doom Eternal BFG look like that.
Rage 2 BFG looks pretty cool, that the bones of your enemies is the only remnant after getting shoot is a great detail, but I would rather the bones get a little burned or with some dirt.
A demon prowls among Hell’s layers, he hopes to catch off guard his nemesis, The notorious Doomslayer. He hops along the floating rocks, climbing up tall cliffs, the slayer’s blood is near, he sniffs. Should've had the original DOOM alpha BFG included as the first one on the list. It was basically a hyped up plasma gun that filled like the entire screen with a spread of the same shots, but too "Christmas-y" because the plasma shots were green & red. I fondly remember Quake II's BFG. It's interesting that that version is the mechanic used by almost all versions after it, rather than the OG version. I really appreciate the Rage 2's BFG being effectively a piece of Hell/Mars that dropped to Rage's world and that is is the most authentic to the original of all the modern versions. Could've done without the random pistons on it though. :D
