- In 1974, the Latin Rock band Sapo released their only album.
A self-titled effort showcasing funk, rock, and brown-eyed soul behind Latin rhythms, Sapo were set to carry the torch of Latin Rockers deeper into the 70s.
Unfortunately, it was not meant to be.
However, for one night the band would reunite and re-visit their past, putting on a blistering set, highlighting tunes from that very album.
This is the show in its entirety, as it does come requested from time to time.
Enjoy some history and play it loud!
Dir. Note: This shoot was very impromptu, and I dig it for a number of reasons. I took some creative liberties, but it was cut in homage to a 1972 documentary entitled “Our Latin Thing”.
It was cool to see all of these musicians bunched up real tight in a sweaty club, and the cameras barely having room to film anything.
It was a challenge, but a lot of fun.
I'm a black 42 yr old southern from Monticello Florida.
This group's album lines up with ANY CHICANO FUNK album. These dudes were BAD ASSSSSSS!!!!!
I'M STILL BUMPIN , MALO, EL CHICANO, SANTANA, SAPO, AZTECA! TIERRA .....GREAT MUSIC NEVER FADES IT' JUST KEEP'S GETTING BETTER!
THATS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT” ORALE RAZA 💪🏼!!!!
Great musicians, great band, I never heard about SAPO until this video, my parents never told me about them but definitively a great band, no doubts this was the best season for latino rock bands from San Francisco: Jorge and Carlos Santana, Richard Bean, Raul Rekow, Tony Menjivar, Leo Rosales, Chepito Areas and many many other ones
Music like this is what makes the world go round!!!
Don't let Great Music die, let it be our only contagion now and foreverafter.
This music never gets old, forever young.
RIP Jose Simon. Great caring and passionate guy. Did a lot of work with us at the United Farmworkers Union
In San Joaquin County with Daniel Valdez and Little Joe and La Familia back in the day. Always supportive and tireless. Kept everyone’s spirit up with his sense of humor even during the difficult times. Loved him!
I saw Sapo at the Wiskey A Go Go Hollywood June 22, 1974. The entire original legendary band members were all performing and Richard Bean was lead singer playing the Timbales. I could not believe what a bad ass timbale player Richard Bean was that night. This band is awesome.
Yeah, I was there, too! Great show! All I remember was Rekow just KILLIN' it on congas and Kincaid Miller's smokin' keyboard work!
Raul RIP.
Horn section Bright, Blasting, and Tight!
He estado alli, y siento que el saber que ellos estuvieron en ese bonito lugar me hace encantarme más Avalon Catalina Island

Love the focus on the hands playing their instruments...
Great band of the San Francisco Latin Boom in the 70's - 80's. All great but the Guitar Player stands out. He's great.

Thanks so much for sharing this. In my opinion, Sapo didn't get the recognition that it deserved. I caught them shortly after this show at the Little Fox in RWC. Nice to know that they're still performing.
This is absolutely 💯 incredible! 👑!

Raul shouldve played the whole show on congas.
I kinda enjoyed seeing him play bongos, myself! Glad that it was documented!
Great man that he was, he stayed modestly in the background ,giving preference to the other congaplayer and not showing off what he could do. Beautiful man. Will be always missed.
hi what was the last name of the bass player OSCAR ,on the video band gig?
Damien Black
