    I've never seen such a thing before, the combination between a calm music and his speed, he has total control over the spear. A true piece of art, deadly from the beginning to the end! ❤️

    This was so beautiful. The body movements, the runs and leaps seem to flow like waves with the music and the techniques were amazing.

    I have several questions for anyone who doesn't mind answering:
    1) What makes a martial art either Taoist or Buddhist?
    2) What is the audience chanting?
    3) What is the name of this beautiful music?
    Thanks in advance.

      Thanks for your questions!
      1) We tend to classify Martial Arts as Buddhist or Taoist from where they are based and practiced/developed. Shaolin is rooted in Chan (Zen) Buddhism, so we can say that Shaolin Martial Arts are Buddhist. Wudang Martial Arts come from the Taoist (Daoist) temples in the Wudang mountains, so we say that are Taoist. However, things developed in Shaolin or Wudang have migrated out and martial arts from the outside have migrated into those temples from outside villages, provinces, regions of China and other non-religious sources. Both Shaolin and Wudang, I find, focus more on the philosophical aspects in their training, rather than tying them too tightly to the religion and the accompanying ceremonies and traditions. So, when a martial art comes in from the outside, they adopt it based on their understanding of their own philosophies and try to practice it in a way that shows the characteristics of their viewpoints.
      2) When we were watching him perform the spear we were chanting "Deng Ming Feng (his name) Jaiyou! Deng Ming Feng Jaiyou! Jaiyou, jaiyou, jaiyou!"
      Jaiyou is a term of encouragement kind of like saying "go for it!" or "Let's go!" like we in the west would chant at a sports game. It literally means something like "fill it up" or "fill it with gas". It's essentially an affectionate and supportive cheer.
      3) The music is called "Plastic Dragon" by Hakan Eriksson. The Wudang martial arts, even when they're fast and fierce, are supposed to also embody a relaxed quality with inner stillness, so I thought it would go well with Coach Deng's performance.
      Great questions. Thanks again!

      @@DaWeiGongfu By the way, if you'd like I can give your channel a shoutout, if you send me some footage. I'm doing a new years eve vid, where I drop shoutouts to fellow creators/followers. They just need to record something where they mention something about my channel, something about their own, and maybe show some training or whatever... and add a link to their channel as well, so I can put the link in the video description (and on screen maybe, depending on how it looks during editing).
      The file can be sent to me with wetransfer.com to michael.p.gottlieb@gmail.com send it before Christmas eve, if you want to be sure to be featured in the video. I'm releasing either on last day of this year or first day of next year. Remember to put a link to your channel, instagram account a whatever as a message along with the video you send :)

    Is that the same type of spear that Chinese use during feudal era? Is it even durable against slash from sword?

    • @DaWeiGongfu
      @DaWeiGongfu  3 года назад +3

      It's similar, but a bit lighter for modern performance/training. They're typically made of "white waxwood" trees. It's a single tree and not a dowel milled from wood. So, the grain is never broken. It's flexible and strong, so they can take a surprising amount of abuse. I did a lot of sparring and two person weapons forms with my master and he used to strike my spear with a broadsword and pudao and it would nick the spear after weeks of that abuse but never break it. It would have to be a lot heavier to hold up against a battle weight, battle sharpened sword though.

    • @DaWeiGongfu
      @DaWeiGongfu  6 лет назад

      They do! I have a bit of video on one of the VLOGS of some of the students training Xingyi. I haven't done it there myself, but it is a part of Wudang training and some people specialise in it.

    What you a performer or somethin I searched for master spearman not some dancer

    • @ericthered2963
      @ericthered2963 3 года назад +1

      Well that is how Kung Fu is like.
      The Forms are artistic compilations of techniques, for ease of repeated practicing.
      Each technique can be used in one or multiple ways in a fight.
      But not everyone practicing Kung Fu Forms knows their applications in real combat.
      If you want to see applications of those techniques you would need to search for them.
      Or you search for HEMA-Spear then you would also find more videos on how to wield a spear in a fight.

  • @freerider3434

    That's a dance. Stabs are slow and inaccurate. Tons of unnecessary and wasted movement.

    • @junodonatus4906
      @junodonatus4906 4 года назад +1

      Yes it is a "dance" but that is not a negative connotation. What does it take to become a dancer, especially one that can interpret martial arts movements and make them poetic and tell a story with them?
      And the movements do seem accurate and precise and explosive to me... every target he stabs is either to the head, body, or feet of a similar sized opponent.
      This form is likely a modern invention/ interpretation rather than training for combat. That does not take away from the fact that it is a demonstration of great skill.
