Another cracking video.. the Hobblers used to have to do the ships in Portishead and would have to steam a boat over from Avonmouth or Portbury pier every time, it wasn’t something they enjoyed I believe! lol The small red brick building which is now a fancy cafe near the locks was the old Lockgatemans building and my father hated standing in there in the winter waiting for a ship as the air was thick with tobacco smoke and they always had a coke fire burning, the heat was unbearable, even in winter. Regarding the parish wharf.. you are correct, they did take the boats out at the top of the dock and that was the actual parish wharf and every year they would hire a crane to life the boats in and out. The vast majority of the boats were from the creek in Pill as that’s where the sailing club was and back then, Pill was one of the only places to keep a boat… there was a waiting list as long as your arm to get a mooring! The new parish wharf is at 10:23 into this video and you can see the gates open… I’ve always known the high street area to be called the village and my the looks of it, you lived near the old police station? My grandfather was born just up the hill from there.
Thanks again for you lovely comments and taking the time to share your local experiences. I once heard the old power station was used to store radioactive isotopes from Hinkley! My source worked there and handled the stuff!!! Didn't do him any harm, always looked fit as a fiddle. We loved our time in Portishead but moved out when the money moved in!
What can i say that hasn't already been said about these videos, I can't without repeating my self or other viewers. Not only did we have Portishead history but we got to see the wonderful Esther in her younger days, I must say Jerrard quite a catch. Thanks again for sharing your video TTFN see you next week.
Thankyou for another entertaining episode. I appreciate that you have a wealth of knowledge and interest within this location and it must be interesting reminiscing. As see that you now wear your mesh jacket. I bought one this year and for the first time am cool riding on hot days.
Loved this one. What a lot of interesting information, who knew the transformation that Portishead has undergone, not me. Thanks for a great episode, lovely to see blast from the past Esther too.
We could have said more! The WC&P railway line is a charming story. The Weston terminal was at the junction of Milton Road and Ashcombe Road and long stretches of the line are still evident if you know where to look.
@greatbritishbikingadventures yes, have watched everyone..lived at 28 robin lane...clevedon..now in winnpeg, mb, Canada. Came here in1977. Sister lives in clevedon
Another interesting episode, my ears pricked when I heard Albright and Wilson, when you passed through Whitehaven in Cumbria we had the Marchon works, now gone, my grandfather was a foreman there and my Dad and Uncle also worked there en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albright_and_Wilson

We never tire of hearing it John🙂. Back in the day, we had a Sony 8 video camera. I can remember people saying how good the quality was😆😆😆.

Tha no you. Hope the next one will go out on time!!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 love a good U turn video 🧑🏻✈️↩️ I had no idea Portishead had such a history 🤯👌🏻
Hopefully it will be the last for this series! A lot of locals have no idea of Portishead's past.
Another top informative episode lots I was unaware of even tho I’m on the doorstep just along the coast….looking forward to the Clevedon vid

Thanks for the memory of Portishead. As kids we used the pool alot. I hope to see lots of clevedon in the next episode, as we lived there too.
Don't expect too much, Clevedon's not nearly as interesting as Portishead. We're just going through the footage now.
@greatbritishbikingadventures but as a boy, I roamed everywhere...don't need a map....
Well done on keeping that to 1 episode, brevity is a virtue
Why thank you. It's a challenge knowing what not to say!!!
I lived in Portishead as a boy. Number 28 the paddock.
Hello Mark, where have you been? 😃 Has the algorithm sent you our way with the Portishead connection or have you been following for a while?
@greatbritishbikingadventures yes, have watched everyone..lived at 28 robin lane...clevedon..now in winnpeg, mb, Canada. Came here in1977. Sister lives in clevedon
@greatbritishbikingadventures it's a long coast line ........
Ha! Currently editing the next episode and we just passed Robin Lane.
Love the Bible verses . Alan Northern Ireland. 👍
Hi Alan, sounds like you've only just found us? Only been to Northern Ireland once (to watch the racing at Cookstown) and loved it!

Good to hear from you again Adrian. Well, we're nearly there! I think just 2 more episodes now.
