    Another cracking video.. the Hobblers used to have to do the ships in Portishead and would have to steam a boat over from Avonmouth or Portbury pier every time, it wasn’t something they enjoyed I believe! lol The small red brick building which is now a fancy cafe near the locks was the old Lockgatemans building and my father hated standing in there in the winter waiting for a ship as the air was thick with tobacco smoke and they always had a coke fire burning, the heat was unbearable, even in winter. Regarding the parish wharf.. you are correct, they did take the boats out at the top of the dock and that was the actual parish wharf and every year they would hire a crane to life the boats in and out. The vast majority of the boats were from the creek in Pill as that’s where the sailing club was and back then, Pill was one of the only places to keep a boat… there was a waiting list as long as your arm to get a mooring! The new parish wharf is at 10:23 into this video and you can see the gates open… I’ve always known the high street area to be called the village and my the looks of it, you lived near the old police station? My grandfather was born just up the hill from there.

      Thanks again for you lovely comments and taking the time to share your local experiences. I once heard the old power station was used to store radioactive isotopes from Hinkley! My source worked there and handled the stuff!!! Didn't do him any harm, always looked fit as a fiddle. We loved our time in Portishead but moved out when the money moved in!

  • @PillSharks
    @PillSharks 5 дней назад

    Fair play, you’ve done old Pill proud with this… well, apart from the Portishead lads coming over for a scrap, they wouldn’t dare! 😂🦈⚓️. First I noticed the mast on my boat, then my Land Rover and then a photo of me in one of our work boats.. I’m a descendant of many Pilots and Hobblers on my fathers and my mothers side and I’m a 5th or 6th descendant of a Pill Hobbler/ boatman! Many of us are related, some twice.. one of the lads is related to me on my fathers and mothers side! We are 18 strong and all live in Pill and understand our heritage as many of us have had the job handed down from father, grandfather and so on.. Unfortunately, even Pill has had its community spirt challenged over the last few years as we’ve had many move in to use the village as a commuter hub, they don’t want to use the pubs and certainly aren’t interested in the local ways.. this year Pill regatta and Pill rag will be held close in May and June, pop over and jump in a boat and have a race, you’ll be made to feel most welcome… the thing we don’t like is outsiders coming here and trying to change our ways! 😂⚓️🦈🏴‍☠️🍺 Also, riding past Easton church yard at the end was nice as many of the Pill mariners are laying in there.

    • @greatbritishbikingadventures
      @greatbritishbikingadventures 4 дня назад

      We're outsiders but we have an affinity with Pill. We both worked there for a time and got to know the village and some of the characters, great people. The history and culture is fascinating and it would be a very sad day if it were spoiled. I've lived on the estuary all my life but very rarely been on the water. I'd love to go out on a boat so might just take you up on that offer! Thanks for watching and commenting, it's great to hear from a proper local.

    • @PillSharks
      @PillSharks 4 дня назад

      @ well, the regatta is the 24th of May. Come along and if there’s a boat available then have a race, it’s just a bit of fun nowadays.. my wife takes the bookings so I’ll tell her to watch out for two bikers. lol Only found you as I’m also a biker, what do you think of the Rev it mesh jacket you had on? This year was going to be a bit special with the arrival of an original Pill Pilot Skiff called the Letty.. she left Pill in the 1920s and has never returned! Unfortunately, the owner who I know well has had to put her up on the market after a nasty head injury with the boom, so I doubt she will ever see the brown murky waters again. Both my old grans worked up the hospital and my grandfather who was born in Portishead.. many Pill people worked up there over the years!

    • @greatbritishbikingadventures
      @greatbritishbikingadventures 4 дня назад

      @@PillSharks The jacket is fantastic in summer when the weather is hot (for UK) and the skies are clear. Otherwise, it's totally impractical and a bugger to keep clean. There's a bit of a story that led to its purchase half way through our coast trip. I can overheat in bike gear and get very uncomfortable.🥵 I'm not a sanctimonious biker zealot 👼who insists everyone else is as safe as me and I enjoy riding 'casually' when the conditions are right. As you might imagine, I got a few comments from those sanctimonious biker zealots.🙄 I wasn't bothered and still ride in more casual gear occasionally but thought I would treat myself to a nice summer jacket.😁. I'm due to work on 24th May but I've put in in the calendar and will see if I can get the day off!!!

    It's a shame you repeat the lie that Liverpool gained most of its wealth through the slave trade. Absolute woke nonsense. Although many boats may have been registered there, slaves would never have been taken from Africa to Liverpool. Pointless. Liverpool gained it's wealth from salt initially, then coal and all other goods that Britain produced by the boat loads. Those warehouses on the docks weren't full of slaves!

    • @greatbritishbikingadventures
      @greatbritishbikingadventures 2 месяца назад

      Hi Lead Balloon, what an apt handle you’ve given yourself. Woke Nonsense? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. That made me laugh, I’ve been called many things but you’re the first to call me ‘woke’ (if only you knew my views on ‘wokeness’). Sounds like you are denying Liverpool had a role in the slave trade? Unless your theory has some evidence I say that is simply not true. I didn’t say or even suggest the warehouses were for slaves. The video references the ‘triangular trade’. The ‘triangular trade’ was where goods manufactured in Britain were taken to west Africa and exchanged for slaves that were then taken to the West Indies and exchanged for products such as sugar and tobacco. It was the these products (that could not be grown in our climate) that were then brought to Britain and sold making the merchants very rich. Very few slaves were brought to Britain but there were some. Interestingly they could not be slaves on British soil because slavery was forbidden here but not elsewhere in the British Empire. The few that were brought here were made 'indentured servants' to get around this. Many were released from their servitude following appeals to the courts. Was Liverpool’s port used for other goods coming from other parts of the world? Of course it was. Especially before the slave trade became a more lucrative business. Before you ask for the evidence, what I have stated are the accepted facts around this subject. Google 'triangular slave trade' and there will be 1,000's of references backing up the above. On the other hand, your position is far more tenuous and therefore more incumbent upon you to provide evidence, point me in the right direction, I would genuinely take a look with an open mind. I think there are many things we have been deceived by but the 'triangular' slave trade is not one of them. What else are you in denial about?

    Thank you, it was very thorough, very honest, and lacking in all that journalistic BS that some reviews throw at us. I'll be trying to find one of these next year, my ZZR1200 is a bit too sporty for my ageing, creaking, and clunking body. I do like the power though.......

    • @greatbritishbikingadventures

      Thanks for your comment. Going from a ZZR1200, you will definitely notice a difference in the top end power. The CT is a detuned VFR1200. I can’t recall the exact figures but it takes 160/70ish down to 120ish. BUT it converts the lost bhp into torque. The pulling power is amazing and very smooth, it doesn’t chug like a twin. All the best on your hunt for one.

    Brilliant video and thanks for taking the time to make it. I currently have a k1200s BMW and its a cracking machine but always want a bit nore comfort and two up riding. How is is wind protection and noise as you seem to have a very low screen? Is the pillion side of things comfy?

    • @greatbritishbikingadventures
      @greatbritishbikingadventures 4 месяца назад

      I had a Honda Blackbird before, so probably very similar to your BMW. The improvement in comfort and wind protection is very noticeable. When we first got the CT we were amazed at the difference. Over time, we've noticed some buffeting (as you would) but are still mightily impressed with the amount of wind protection/noise compared with the Blackbird. The screen is adjustable and the highest position is plenty high enough. It's also an aftermarket screen and bigger than the Honda one. Givi do an even bigger screen if you need it. As for comfort, that was also 'chalk & cheese'. Once you get used to the bolt upright seated position you really appreciate the lack of strain on wrists, hands, arms, back etc. We've spent 10 hours a day riding it for 30 days, sometimes with very few short stops, and it's been great. Don't get me wrong, it's no Goldwing but it's still very comfortable. Having the aftermarket seat probably makes a big difference but we wouldn't know because it came with the bike and have never tried the original.

As to Weston's economics and attractions, it looks quite nice really, compared to Sandown (Isle of Wight), which is rather dire. WSM is now on my "to visit" list, maybe by bike. Cheers to you both, thank you for the trip. Kind regards. SteveD (IoW)

      Hi Steve, the rest of that bottle went down very quickly after the camera was switched off!! Thanks for all your comments and, of course, following us from the early days. Weston is much better than people think it is. If you do visit get in touch and we’ll meet up. We love the IoW and is due another visit.

      Thanks for following us and all your comments. The bike has been awesome, done exactly what we wanted and needed it to do. It let us down once but not the bike’s fault. Last owner had neglected the battery maintenance and I knew a new one was needed but thought it would hang on longer than it did. Amazing and much underrated machine.

    Thanks both for another great installment, what a lovely end to the series! It's been a captivating watch, and I'm sure I'm not alone in looking forward to the next adventure! Scotland's North Coast 500 perhaps? 😬 I'll be back in the saddle next season with plans to do the same. Safe travels both and god bless!

    Many thanks for all your time and effort to bring us your incredible journey. They all ways say the same route in the opposite direction is totally different. Plus, if you go clockwise, you make more left turns than right ones. Just a thought!

      So good to hear from you David. That’s an interesting idea that hadn’t occurred to us. We had thought about going around again but not in the opposite direction (for some reason). We loved the trip so much and would definitely do it again.

    Wow - the final instalment of an epic journey both for you and us happy viewers!!! Yes you’ve adapted your filming and editing as the route gathered momentum and found the style that you were both comfortable with. I’m sure that if you repeated this tale the early stages would mimic the latter ones which became more polished and full of information but in all honesty the appeal of watching the whole series has been witnessing the steady transition from total novices to consummate entertainers, that latter you have certainly achieved. And yes you inspired me to complete a weeks ride to the south of Ireland using google maps (which you demonstrated how to use and add stops in an earlier addition). Once again many thanks and well done. And your next sortie is ………

    Another awesome episode and I’m glad we got to meet you both in Pendine. I know from experience being a motorcycle rider you must have at least another episode with some swearing and road rage car drivers trying to unhinge your day, hold on, I’ve got 80 plus episodes I could upload.🤔 Seriously though, absolutely brilliant from start to finish. We will give you a shout when down your way for a brew! Keep it shiny side up. M and T. X

      We remember fondly riding down into Pendine and seeing you stood at the gate waving us over. You had no idea who we were but were prepared to offer secure free parking and company just because we were fellow bikers - what a gent! We'd love to return the favour, feel free to pop in for a cuppa sometime, the GBBA email address is in the channel details for you to get in touch. PS, an episode of 'out takes', now that’s an idea!

    OH dear sadly it's the end! Speaking for my self you have shared not only numerous hours of motorcycling adventure but awesome historical facts,sunday school, of course the spectacular coastline and your wonderful company, I can't thank you enough.We like camping just a shame we don't get the weather to enjoy it more. The original pool looked like loads of fun for the surrounding commuity and far better than the monstrosity that followed.No need to appologise for the first few videos it's been an evolution i've enjoyed every minuet. All the best hope to see you again in the not too distant future. Our plans for touring Scotland are on the back burner for now due to child minding duties. TTFN enjoy your weekend.😪

I need my weekly fix of GBBA, especially now winter is coming 🥶 You could be on to something with camping in the rain, there's a channel called Go4x4 Camping and he often gets 10M+ hits on his camping in the rain videos with his dog Ted 🤯⛺ LOL'd at the 'Long Way Round' reference, good to see Mutley make an appearance in the last Coast episode. I felt the same but a left hand injury was making clutch lever operation on long journeys painful. I may have been forced into it a little bit but having lived with it for 3 years and 14,000 miles can honestly say I would do it even if I didn't have the injury. You rarely hear regrets from riders who've made the plunge, quite the opposite. It's up to you, but the fact you're considering it suggests you already know the answer.

    The structure filmed at 4'13" is the barrier where the river Hull meets the Humber. A barrier is lowered to prevent tidal surges overwhelming the River Hull thus causing floods upstream.
