Cool video. I did some simalar tests with a hero 3 black and a H1, it seems the gopro processes the audio and it comes out a bit boomy sounding compared to recording it directly to the H1. There was definitely a difference looking at the wave files side by side in adobe audition. Im guessing the output on the h1 is a bit more power than the average mic will put out.I had slightly better results lowering the output volume on the h1. I went as low as 50 but I think that still may be a bit too hot.
Hello. Yes you can hook it up to a wireless lav mic as well. On my channel I also did a test with a wireless handheld mic, which works as a lav would as far as the usb adapter. Now, the quality of the lav mic you use will certainly determine whether or not you would like to use that set up. The wireless mic I used is not a quality one, but still it was usable.
Great questions. you do not have to have it in record mode. Therefore you're not having to send the audio to the h1 micro card. As long as its turned on the sound will pass through to the hero3. If you want to record it onto zoom as well you can. i use mp3 when recording onto the h1 card, it gives you the ability to record much more. The wavs take up more space and for me, I don't really hear a difference
Hello. The extension cable is 15 feet. I have another video testing the me52 and it's not using the wire. It's directly plugged into the hero3 and I'm about 3 - 4 feet away. You can watch the video and hear the quality. If I was going to be 5 or more feet away I'd definitely use a recorder like the zoom, or a shotgun type of microphone, since the me52 probably wont pick up the sound you need from that distance.
I think that would work well. I used a dynamic mic, which I plugged into a small pre-amp and had the left right channel plugged into the hero3 with similar adapters as you mentioned. It worked very well. I really don't see why it wouldn't work.
Hello. I just used a 3.5mm extension cord, so male to male. Then plug it into line out on the h1 and into the gopro mic adapter. As far as an external mic yes you can plug into h1 input and still run line out to gopro, or skip line out and record straight into h1 and audio sync.
Yeah, you know I also have noticed that simply not using the stereo adapter, or using a mono mic definitely seems to not cause problems. I have at times, used mono mic then just copied the audio into l/r channel in editing and it's worked well.
Go Pro had a what I like to call the tripod casing, sound is accessible, but you will have to do some drilling on it if you want acces to the HDMI connection. Just go to GoPro's official website, they have all the accessories that you need for any setup. They are pricey too, so it's good to know what your going to be shooting with the camera before you get it.
Thanks for your response. I did get the H1 and also have the Rode Stereo Video Mic. Your RUclips was very helpful. The H1 arrived today so I have not worked with it yet. The Rode so far is a big disappointment. Very low sound even when set to 0 db. -10 db which is the only other choice was very poor. On to the H1. Thanks, Elliot
Hello, here's the thing... There is a definite "youtube" lag, however I only notice the lag on my ipad. On my PC, the original file and the youtube version have no lag. But you are correct there is a definite video lag when I watch on my iPad. Were you watching on a mobile device? If so, maybe that's the reason, though I don't know why a mobile device would cause the lag.
I did not see anywhere that you listed the microphones you settled on. For 99.00 bucks the zoom h1 seemed to have quite an increase in overall volume, while the Olympus had better noise cancelling ability. I am about to test a Rode SVM. I have the Olympus based on your recommendations and it is quite good. The H1 intrigues me. Elliot.
From what I have heard, generic USB adapters do not work with the hero3. I have the gopro mic adapter I purchased from gopro.com for $19.99, so I'm not certain that others won't work. However I think there are some comments below from other users that have attempted generic brand USB adapters with no success.
Fantastic video - really appreciate you taking the time to make this. I use my GoPro 3 for recording videos mainly face to camera, how to type videos, and the external mic is perfect. Thanks!
No, the olympus is a wired lapel mic. I've used the audio technica pro 88 wireless lapel mic and that works just as good as the olympus, without the wire.
The reason you hear one channel on other videos is because the mic is a mono one. I was using a mono to stereo adapter, which sends signal to both channels. Olympus also makes a stereo version which I did a test of on another video, its more expensive about 50 bux.
Did you try the me-51s yet? I purchased that one awhile back. Made a video testing it, as a shotgun style and I was very impressed. Hope you got yours and its working out for you.
Excellent review. Very helpful for me since I'm considering the GoPro Hero3. Can you plug in the 3.5mm adapter with the waterproof case on? I need to be able to do that.
Unfortunately you cannot. However you can certainly modify the waterproof case by drilling out a lil section big enough to fit the plug in. Of course this will render your waterproof case non-waterproof for future use.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I sometimes get so frustrated I just want to buy it and try it-in this case, I would have lost a lot of money. Thanks again!
I really don't know the answer myself. I am guessing that due the smaller size of the hero3 they wanted to skip the third input which would have been the microphone input. I certainly wish it would have had the direct mic input, but in the end if that's the sacrifice for the size, I'll take it, because the smaller size is more beneficial.
The only thing I could guess, your USB input jack may be loose? Try holding the connection tight next time, maybe while someone else is driving and see if that's it.
It's GoPros Frame. It's the equivalent of what they used to call the skeletal housing. The old version was better, since it protected the lens. This one is simply a molded piece of plastic that fits around the gopro. It was a bit pricey as well, I think I paid $40.00. It comes with two, one that will fit with lcd screen and one that fits without lcd screen.
If you're unaware, the gopro niche has widened far beyond sports enthusiasts. I have seen countless professional productions where the microphone used was 4-5 times larger and many times was more expensive than the gopro. The Carson Daly late night talk show is a prime example. I believe it's fair for people to hear the difference from using a lapel mic vs internal mic. In any event, if there is no point, nor circumstance for any of this, it leaves me wondering why gopro cameras have a mic input
Just a quick note. The usb jack on the Hero 3 black has fallen into the inside of the camera. It has gone back for replacement. This connection is incredibly weak. I have another black here and it's okay but has not had the USB port used as much. The camera going back is 3 months old, but Gopro certainly stood behind the product.
You get a weird sterio buffeting noise when using the Zoom H1 @ 5:30 I get the same with a Hero2 and a stereo lapel mic in my crash helmet - so bad that I had to switch to using a mono mic as, for some reason, the mono feed cleans up the audio a huge amount
@Wednesday Thursday actually nvm that previous comment, I read comments below lol but I would like to know #1 how long was your extension cable? And #2 how well does the mic work NOT taped to your chest and at about the same distance from you as the GoPro?
Hello, I don't believe that will work. I believe the gopro was set up internally so that the usb input could accept the adapter and microphone. However I have not tried this on a point and shoot through the usb connection. Worth a shot, but unlikely to work.
The h1 is awesome! It's great to have around for many uses ad along with other video equipment. With the gopro I've since learned you really need to have the settings on the h1 at a lower input then I did in this video. I agree the volume is a bit much but you can definitely get better sound wen you find the correct audio gain level for what your filming. Yes I also love the Olympus especially for the price.
Where did you get that black mounting case for your GoPro Hero 3 that allows for a space for the input. The regular mounts don't work unless you drill a hole into them.
I'm a musician and I want to run a line out of my personal headphone mix directly into the usb gopro adaptor is that possible to capture the sound as well?
Did you shoot this in 720p? The video looks fish-eyed. I have only shot in 1080p and it doesn't fish-eye the video like that. I am still looking for a good setup with an external mic to shoot video from the GoPro which is side mounted on my motorcycle helmet. My voice is hardly picked up at all with the internal mic, especially while riding the pit bikes which are really loud! Any suggestions?
Thanks for setting up all of those tests, its clear that the external mics are far superior. Just happened on you channel. Nicely done. +Wednesday Thursday
how come you dont get the static crackle when you are inside the car? if I am moving in a car, no matter how its mounted or held, there is crackle in the audio. Stumped
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Question. I want to take my road bike on the mountains and use standard headphones (ear buds) with inline mic (iPhone type - skull candy). Do you think will work? I guess I would have to buy the skeleton case to gain access for side ports but I'm okay with that if it works. Thanks in advance.
I'm building a sustainable camera rig with the Gopro Hero3. I've got a Audio technica direct condenser camera mount mic. Once I get everything together. I'm going to make a vid of the entire rig to show you how to make a Gopro into an all around video camera combined with a light camera rig, external audio input, led lighting, and all connected to a solar back pack for continous recording. Better then shelling out 1000 bucks on an HD camera/camcorder
I'm wondering since I have trouble finding point and shoot cameras that take video with a mic input, if I could also use this adapter from 1/8 input to a mini usb or micro usb-which ever the camera has that I choose and if it will also record from the external mic since it appears you've just connected it into the port that connects the camera to the computer-something that should be on all cameras and camcorders.
i ordered the external mic you used for your go pro test. i just got a go pro black edition, and i got olympus mic in mail today but it doesnt have a cord or clip attachment, just mic. im new to this. where do i get the cord and clip that works with this microphone so i can mic myself up 5 feet away with cord and clip on my clothes. id be so appreciative. i didnt know mic would come without a cord or mic clip.
One thing though. You cannot use the attachment with the cases they give you so you have to pay another $20 for the mic adapter and another $20 for the case to be able to even use it with a mount. Worst of all its a mount that doesnt even protect the lens at all. Great vid! Just some thoughts.
I just ordered the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition, along with that adaptor. Any reason why I can't plug the line level output of a mixing board into that, with the proper patch cable, like 2- 1/4" plugs L/R at one end, and a 3.5mm at the other end?
I do not believe the original gopro hd has external mic capabilities. Thehero2 does but that's a regular 3.5 mm jack. This adapter then would only work for hero3.
Sharing good ideas I can add it is also possible keeping the case (the smaller 3+) and using external microphone/composite/power with a solution similar to this GoPro Hero3 + Black - DIY external mic adapter cable to fit inside case (waterproof)
That's interesting with the shotgun mic there's a bit of a lag and lots of feedback- I thought you had layered the audio! This was such a great review for audio. This is a huge factor for purchasing a go-pro for me, thank you so so much!! :)
can you please explain how to use an external mic with the gopro, i bought a NON gopro adapter wire 3.5mm Mic Adapter, and i have an extra setting when connecting the wire, it looks like a playback setting i dont know how to use it!! i went flying and it never recorded my voice!!! your help would be appreciated!!
great video. Ive also a hero3 BE and a miniUSB-mic adapter. But it dosn´t work. I put it in and i also hear the internal mic. Must I got to the menu an click on something? thanks
My canon 500d(Rebel T1i) does not have a mic input, do you know if this adapter will work to my camera? If not, do you know if there is an adapter to my camera?
Hi, question please. Do you know if I can input a stereo signal (mixing board) and get stereo results using the microphone adapter you are reviewing in this video or is it mono only. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
thank you so much for this great research video! it was very helpful. although i am disappointed that the hero 3 does not have a external mic input and that you'll have to get the adaptor separately, but the quality is not that bad and i approve of it overall Thank you for making this video!

Hello, no problem, it's a good question. I was using a wired lapel mic. The mic had a 3.5mm extension cable that runs about 15 feet,
I agree! Sounds like a pretty cool rig, I'd love to see it when you complete.
Thanks GoPro audio community folks, I've been trying to find a external mic solution and you have solved my problem. Thumbs Up
Best test i've seen so far! Nearly perfect! Great!
Hey, thanks so much! Very appreciated.
Great questions. you do not have to have it in record mode. Therefore you're not having to send the audio to the h1 micro card. As long as its turned on the sound will pass through to the hero3. You are correct. Unfortunately the "frame" is nowhere near as protective as the hero2's skeletal casing.
Thanks for your response. I did get the H1 and also have the Rode Stereo Video Mic. Your RUclips was very helpful. The H1 arrived today so I have not worked with it yet. How many DVD's do you have?

The mic adapter? It would not, but most Sony HD camcorders have a microphone input terminal.
Hello, unfortunately there are no setting, it will just record at whatever internal settings gopro made the camera with.

how come you dont get the static crackle when you are inside the car? if I am moving in a car, no matter how its mounted or held, there is crackle in the audio. Stumped
oops, just checked it actually $40 for the frame mount to be able to use the adapter. Of course it plus shipping so comes to an additional $60+.

It will work with any hero3, once you have the 3.5mm to usb adapter.
Olympus ME-52W Noise Canceling Microphone
It's 16 bux on amazon right now.
That adapter doesnt work on my cam. Is anyrhing to change in the settings?

Another question I have, is the adaptor true stereo left and right, or is it 2 channel mono? Thanks for your help btw.
why didn't they just have the externel micinput on the go pro? does using the usb make the sound better?
I just ordered the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition, along with that adaptor. Any reason why I can't plug the line level output of a mixing board into that, with the proper patch cable, like 2- 1/4" plugs L/R at one end, and a 3.5mm at the other end?
so, is the 3.5 mm mic adapter affect the quality of the sound recorded??
I have this camera in a rally car. Works Olympus ME-52 in a rally car?
Great job of making this test :) The lapel mic seems to be a winner
Thanks for a great video
on second view, the video actually lags the audio, not the other way around. Does hero 3 have a/v sync issues or just a youtube issue?
I do not believe the original gopro hd has external mic capabilities. Thehero2 does but that's a regular 3.5 mm jack. This adapter then would only work for hero3.
I have to original GoPro HD can I use this adaptor on there?
Can you use any USB to mic converter? Or does it have to be specifically made by gopro?
Is it possible to adjust the audio level from the H1 to the GoPro?
Sharing good ideas I can add it is also possible keeping the case (the smaller 3+) and using external microphone/composite/power with a solution similar to this GoPro Hero3 + Black - DIY external mic adapter cable to fit inside case (waterproof)
I have not been able to verify if gopro3 records in mono or can it do stereo ( stereo mics)
That's interesting with the shotgun mic there's a bit of a lag and lots of feedback- I thought you had layered the audio! This was such a great review for audio. This is a huge factor for purchasing a go-pro for me, thank you so so much!! :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH
Hey Wednesday Thursday,
Do you know if I can hook up the 3.5mm usb adapter to a wireless lavalier mic system and it function properly?
how if i connect a mic from my big camera standard mic from sony hvr 1000 e. Is there possibility to make damage to a gopro??
.
Would you be able to use this adapter on any go-pro, or even the white edition? Thanks :)
Does the Olympus ME52 work wireless or does it have to be wired to the GoPro?
would this work for any action camera? i have the sj4000
great video. Ive also a hero3 BE and a miniUSB-mic adapter. But it dosn´t work. I put it in and i also hear the internal mic. Must I got to the menu an click on something?
thanks
What external.mic would you recomend to be used for motorcycle vlogging?
Thanks for the vid. Very helpful!
i have a trouble with sound, the volume is too low,i barely even here my voice...any suggestions??hero3 silver
My canon 500d(Rebel T1i) does not have a mic input, do you know if this adapter will work to my camera? If not, do you know if there is an adapter to my camera?
Iv seen other videos on yotube with the sound on one side when using the me52
Thanks, excellent comparison
Thanks for the video...
Wow the internal mix is 1000 better than on the hero 2!
Does it work for GoPro white edition?
how where you able to have the mic on youre shirt? did you have a long cable?
Very helpful video dude...thanks for taking the time to make it
Hi, question please. Do you know if I can input a stereo signal (mixing board) and get stereo results using the microphone adapter you are reviewing in this video or is it mono only. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
can you use the polar pro mic
Did you edit the audio afterwards?
The internal mic on the hero 3 doesn't even sound that bad! Didn't know that, but the external does obviously sound even better
What program do you use to edit videos?
Thanks man :) Getting my Go Pro for my birthday in a week
thank you so much for this great research video! it was very helpful. although i am disappointed that the hero 3 does not have a external mic input and that you'll have to get the adaptor separately, but the quality is not that bad and i approve of it overall
Thank you for making this video!
Best review ever!thanks a lot!
Do you have a link to your Lapel microphone? :)
