  • Did you ever want to know where Lydon lived in London? The Stones? or Bowie? Me too! So when I was in London, these are some of the first places I wanted to visit.
See where Lydon lived after the Sex Pistols and where he formed his legendary group PIL. I also show how it looks today compared to when Lydon lived there. Also nearby is the first flat the Rolling Stones ever lived and where Brian Jones, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger started to make music in 1962.
Lastly I visit the famous house where David Bowie lived during the height of Ziggy Stardust fame before he moved to the U.S. in the later 70's. These are historic places in rocknroll history!
    #sexpistols, #johnlydon, #johnnyrotten, #sidvicious, #rollingstones, #davidbowie, #rockmusic, #pil,

Great little tour video. I actually went and sought out Lydons place when I was in London 10 years ago. I was surprised how close it was to the old Sex shop. Love how the early PiL days were sort of centered in that apartment. There's awesome old film footage of PiL in that place on RUclips, that Don Letts shot back then. Definitely check that out. I wish I knew The Stones flat was so close by! Would have loved to see it in person. I'm a big Pistols, Stones and Bowie fan, so this video was a great watch. I definitely can relate to your excitement. I stood out front of Worlds End and just stared at it, thinking of the history and all the characters that milled around there in 76-77. Thanks for making this. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for watching! Yes, the Stones flat is only a few minutes walk from Lydon's old place. Gunter Grove and Edith Grove are not very charming streets, in my opinion, but it's all very expensive there anyway. I was very excited to see all of these places, especially Bowie's place on Oakley and Lydon's flat. It's so interesting to see places up close and imagining all the people going in and out at that time. Rcoknroll history!

I remember when John lived in the Gunter Grove house in c.1978-1982 I used to pass it quite often back then and it was very run down and all the exterior painted parts were a really dull dirty dark red colour and all the paint was peeling off,and as you noted it didn`t have any kind of railings or safety rail around the flat roof area where we saw pictures of him him and PiL hanging out and boozing it up,he`s lucky nobody ever went over the edge!

How interesting that you were walking down that street back then. Outside, it doesn't look that nice now, to be honest. Some of the houses on the street look a little run down, even though it's very expensive. It's a very busy street. Yes, no railings back then at all! In one photo, Lydon has one leg over the edge.

I'm vicariously visiting London via Maggie's videos. Being from near Manchester, I only went to London a few times, in the '70s and '80s for concerts and Alice in Wonderland club events. I left Britain in the mid '80s and have been living in Asia since, with few visits back to England. Bowie was only at Oakley Street for a few months , he left Haddon Hall in Beckenham in '73 and temporarily rented Diana Rigg's flat in Maida Vale before moving to Oakley Street which was rented for him by his management company MainMan where he lived while recording Diamond Dogs. However, Bowie relocated to New York in April 74 and remained in the US until May '76 so he really only spent a very short time at Oakley Street...his
wife Angela lived there while he was in the US. Bowie set up Freddie Buretti his tailor in the basement making his costumes along with Marion, Zowie's nanny.

There is a funny (possibly untrue) story that Bowie painted all the walls and ceilings in Oakley Street black and when asked why by a journalist he supposedly claimed it was so he could identify with the British coal miners who were at that time on strike!

I think it must have been in the first part of '77 when I contacted the Pistols office, before GSTQ came out, as I remember the SPOTS dates later in the year. I think the Chelsea / ATV tour was August-time. One of the funniest things ever was watching Mark Perry trying to stride down the mean streets of Glasgow wearing his bondage pants. ATV were so good then, way better than Chelsea. Did you ever hear their "The Image Has Cracked" album? I remember The SPOTS playing at Lafayettes in Wolverhampton at that time I wonder if that was the gig you missed? No I left my offer with Sophie. She said she would let Malcolm know but I never heard back. I don't think he wanted them playing in the UK at that time. It fitted in better with the story he was spinning. I have watched your US Tour video and enjoyed your remembrances. Brilliant memories to have . . . and photos too. I remember chatting with Debbie Juvenile at a gig one time, she was stunning and was the main attraction in the room. I shall have to watch your Bromley Contingent film next! As I said before I enjoyed your houses film. When we were 17/18 and messing about with being in bands etc. the flat at Edith Grove held real iconic status and we dreamed of living together as a band like Mick, Keith & Brian. I recognized the building of the Rolling Stones, these greek pillars. Funny that you said that there was a big change in their bank accounts from 1963 to 1967. They had their hit Satisfaction in 1964, which was big in the USA, but not in England, because of it"q lyrics. English radiostations at first refused to play that song. Nice to see where Bowie lived. I remember Jah Wobble talking about Lydon living at Gunter grove. He said that he Would play music by the German band Can at unearthly volume. He thought the neighbours must have been terrified of John, because of his reputation in the press. As they never once complained about the volume. Even when it was the early hours.
The track, keep banging the door, by PIL. Is about this flat. He was pissed that the public had found out where he lived, and a steady stream of punks and looney's would show up at all hours, banging on his door. It was this reason, and the constant attention of the Metropolitan police drug squad, that forced him to sell up and move to America.

It might be slightly dodgy in places. We had a guy walk up to us drinking a beer and hassling us for money around World's End. I like it around there though. It seems like a more normal area, where perhaps average people still live.

We did go to the spot in London that was the opening shot on the show, where he drives up to the flat in that fancy yellow sports car and is chased by the black car. It's very close to Buckingham Palace on a quiet street. Thanks for watching!

Portmeirion is a really special place, try and stay there either in the hotel or one of the apartments, once all the daytime visitors leave I think its 4.30pm, the only people there are those staying in the village, so its really amazing, almost like the show! maybe hire a lotus 7 sports car for the visit, I look forward to seeing your video of it!
