  • Here’s a very logical extremely easy and incredibly useful idea over a whole tone scale. It can be used in almost every song, and is also a great technique builder to help you gain comfort with any combination of white and black keys under the hands.

Does Barry ever talk about the melodic minor scale? Immediately thought of it when you said dominant b5. Lydian dominant in Music School Industrial Complex terminology

To me the music school industrial complex “Lydian Dominant” is actually the “important minor” so: C7#11 is G m6 with the F# “borrowed” for the E. Which is a different animal than a C7b5 where the flat five replaces the natural fifth

Also, yes he talks about the melodic minor all the time in many different contexts. One very interesting one that I like to think about is that the minor six diminished scale is really a combination of the melodic and harmonic minor

@@isaacraz idk if you'll see this, but yes I'm starting to see it as those two, or major7#5 as well. It's so versatile and it really connects and derives so many different sounds from one thing. So good. I was taught jazz a different way as a teen but this is so so so much better. So thankful for RUclips.

Great idea, Isaac. I'm going to go over and see the Patreon version, then go upstairs to the piano and start practicing this!

Thanks for sharing. Simple yet effective. I have a scale question related to these type of altered 7 scales. I found that in be bop, a “special” alt scale is often used: it is a Maj 6 dim scale starting from the 3rd. For instance, it is used in the head of Donna Lee in the 2nd bar (F7). Do you know how this scale is called?

it's easy to get caught in a rabbit hole and try to name everything. For myself I found that BH's system's power is in its simplicity. It's still the 6 diminished scale, only now it's from the third. This way your thinking is more global which helps move things along in the moment. That was the real power of BH thinking for me.

@@isaacraz I agree. I shall stick to maj6 dim scale starting from the 3rd.
Your 10 chords routine just became a 11 chords routine :-D. Nr 10 is the alt dim scale version 1 (..b5, b6, natural 6..) and Nr 11 will be the alt dim scale version 2 (..natural 4, natural 5, b6..)

@@marcavice7505 I think (if there was a name :)) it’s the regular harmonic minor scale starting on the 5 note, which gives flat 9, natural 4th and 5th and flat 13th - I see it used all the time!

Hey Isaac. Very cool whole tone device, and awesome advice about not over using (first time I heard "thematic continuity", makes a whole difference). Many Jobim tunes have good spots to use this whole tone lick: Corcovado (Quiet Nights), Desafinado, bridge of Girl from Ipanema. I'll try it on some bossas, thank you!
