I honestly wish this kind of much simpler sushi were more available here in Canada, because I would love to be able to go out and have sushi without having to dedicate myself to the super complex and notably expensive rolls
edit to mention how so many people are absurdly angry at me for either not knowing where to get this or to make it myself lmao I promise you with over 70 comments someone has told me already
try to see if the places near you have simple "maki" or "nigiri". Those are both usually just fish rice and seaweed. And hand rolls are usually pretty simple too. Good luck!
where in canada are you? Head to a t&t supermarket and you can get simple cheap sushi. Even in malls they have the simple ones but granted, they're a bit overpriced for what they are
simple sushi are so good. i love them more than complex ones (tho those w cream cheese are very good too, fried arent)
I feel like I would actually struggle to find a sushi restaurant in North America that DIDN'T have hosomaki or nigiri sushi 🤨
absolutely. i know for myself i really desire the fish and rice as is-i like the special rolls but it’s not something that i want every time. i would love to have nigiri, maki, or sashimi as is but with all the pandemic stuff prices have been huge for the area of canada i live in. it’s so frustrating!!!
The sushi rice in Japan is also well seasoned and the grains of rice are visible, not smushed into glue
What... Are they don't seasoned in America? And I don't believe you with the texture, I've seen videos where it looks fine
@@elpicox1011 maybe its common in one of those buffet restaurants?
I don't know about you but the rice on the sushi looks more like glue than sushi I've seen in the us lmao
@@elpicox1011 I’ve seen videos of coyotes defying gravity when chasing roadrunners so I don’t believe they can’t do it irl logic
@@elpicox1011 there are good and bad sushi places in the US, of course. and it's very easy to find sushi that aren't rolls with a bajillion ingredients, usually in the same restaurant.
Also do not judge the soy sauce and wasabi in Japan.
*”It isn’t what you’re used to”*
That's because the wasabi outside of Japan isn't most often real wasabi.
@@FaintAcrobatTakeout wasabi in japan is also flavoured horseradish. You only get fresh grated in restaurants and sometimes not then.
日本人でもわさび苦手な人結構いるくらい刺激が強い。
In Japan at most shop except some expensive restautrants, also real wasabi is not used horseradish is eaten.
私は日本人でもちろん「にぎり」の寿司も好きですが、アボカドを巻いたロールもとても好きです!

LEGALIZE WEED IN JAPAN
My mom is Japanese and she is always offended when we get sushi... "This is not real sushi!!" 😂
It's so different, but i still like it all. Even the Korean-owned places where i grew up, they didn't give a damn about respecting Japanese tradition, so they thought completely outside of the box and tbf they ended up with some unique and delicious creations.
...But of course authentic Japanese sushi is truly in a league of it's own. Surely it can be found somewhere in the USA... if nowhere else, maybe just NYC and LA
Your dad is white isn’t he? Typical
im japanese and honestly when i first saw those things i thought they looked disgusting, those aren't sushis, i know fusion foods are a thing but the way they modify sushi into that just feels disrespectful to the sushi masters who spent years perfecting sushi-making.
@@AnonymousUser0031 there is super traditional sushi that can be found in the US. It is just really expensive because it is an "exotic" food. The other issue is that US society is incredibly diverse, thus international food such as sushi tends to get heavily modified to suit a wider palate of the (enormous) American population of 333 million. This is why things like the California roll exist. Is it blasphemy? Of course! But I cannot deny that these fusion creations when done well can taste good - though I myself by a wide margin prefer traditional sushi, even if it costs an arm and a leg! Haha. For me it is a special occasion food as I will typically only spring for high end traditional sushi, particularly at restaurants that serve it with real imported wasabi that is grated at the table.
I still wouldn't care tbh. As long as its tasty im digging in!

Surprised there's no Morbius meme yet in this section
the thing that makes the sushi tastes exquisite is that they season the rice throughly in restaurants, sometimes they add Japanese mayo which tastes heavenly. combine that with seaweed, the fish, and an avocado. that's why it's super popular

Sushi in America is labeled as American style sushi in my country and just “Sushi” for the ones Japanese style ones. XD

What’s in the us and other countries are mostly fusion sushi. It’s like saying chicken alfredo is a pasta. You know, the real people won’t acknowledge it but like they won’t kill you for liking it

I love that you're helping us shift our collective awareness! Very cool! Also, can we Americans all high five those involved with the evolution that is now American Sushi?! I love sushi, and I bet I would appreciate the simplicity of traditional sushi as comfort food. Can we find these packaged yummies somewhere in the US?
Granted I have only had sushi in the US but I would miss the "rainbow role" a lot since it is essentially a few different roles all in one, without all the crazy stuff they put on other special roles, and is great for the variety of fish it comes with...it is like a chirashi bowl, one of my favorite dishes, but in a role.
i personally love the crazy sushis too but absolutely nothing will ever top a salmon nigiri in my mind
fatty tuna nigiri!
True. Have you ever tried a braised one? They'll briefly torch the upper side of the fish and add a bit of spring onion. It's amazing how it changes both texture and flavor!
toro nigiri
Nigiri? Is that japanese for nig-
Sushi, cake, “fun-time”, pizza
All amazing things that are still amazing when simple or extravagant.
Wow so even sushi got capitalized on. Why am I not surprised.
Yeah, I like to make my own stuff and it usually ends up being rice, seaweed and some fish. Nothing beats simplicity :)
Food is almost never the same outside of it’s country. Remember this and you’ll almost never be disappointed when you try it in its original form!
I would recommend people do this with all food. Look at it as a fun new experience and give it a chance.
Man we have these in Hawaii in every 7-11 everyone else just missing out lmao. Gotta get the spicy ahi roll and the imitation crab 😙👌
7-11s in the US were bought by are now actually owned by 7-11 japan. That being said, we only have the sketchy safeway sushi at 7-11s in california. I’d love to try the ones in hawaii

@@happypenguin236Check out Marukai/Nijiya. They have decent sushi

I was kind of worried about trying sushi if I go to Japan. I tried sushi here in America, and it had avocado in it. I liked the taste of it, but I have sensory issues, and the texture of the avocado made me want to throw up, and I couldn’t finish it. Hearing that there’s just the fish, rice and seaweed makes me feel better about trying it!
I really enjoy basic rolls when they're made with high quality ingredients
It lets you taste the meat and rice
Sushi rice is the best too
These always made me happy
I've found that in California most sushi places have different menus based on whether it's a simple roll like the one in your video, or a more complicated roll. I prefer the simple rolls and they're way cheaper! Example: Avocado roll, California roll, Spicy Tuna roll.
those are literally all americanized sushi lmaooo
@@elissalesse8320 Yes Ik... I said this was in California
Los Angeles has more sushi restaurants per sq fr than almost any city in the world. Second to Tokyo.
Also tuna maki or rolls are not Americanized. California rolls are a reverse export. They’re sold in Japan.
Deep fried sushi 💀😭😭
I like California rolls though; they have them in Japan too in revolving sushi places
Deep fried sushi is absolutely delicious especially with eel sauce and wasabi 😊 I couldn’t eat it exclusively without regular sushi on the side also bc it’s so heavy. Nevertheless it’s tasty, you should try it one day:)
Fried sushi kinda sounds delicious for me (Since I ate fried Kimbap before)
It's originally called Tempura. Very delicious and common practice
@@halo-7797 tempura is fried veggies or seafood (sometimes chicken too) ! :)

@@kydgoon is it really achievable? I kinda wanna try going there too
@@thenecromancer5007 well the easiest way to get in as far as I know with no background in IT, is to become an english teacher. There are many jobs and homes available through websites like gaijinpot. I paid like 350 bucks to get my C2 proficiency exams which I will have in about 2-3 months. When I have that finished the most expensive part comes which is the CELTA (certificate to teach English foreigners) course which costs about 2500-3000 but you will make that back in a month or 2 working as a teacher. The Netherlands (where I come from) has a 90 day no-visa policy with Japan so that leaves me the option to either stay here and contact job offers or to go there and find a job, I'm leaning towards the latter. Either way most of the schools will make sure ur visa is good to go, if not u can always get it yourself if the school can confirm you'll be working there. For living options the easiest and cheapest way is to get a sharehouse(you share a house with foreighners and Japanese people) without a (big) deposit. But the cheapest options for long term that aren't sharehouses are rooms and houses in Osaka from what i could find. Some rooms going for 160 bucks a month. U could even get a capsule hotel 30 day plan and renew it monthly. It's a tiny capsule but u won't have to get a contract so it's a good first option. Even though most English teaching jobs require 0 japanese, learn some Japanese phrases with duolingo or another service cause it will make ur time there way easier. For food options find the cheapest foodstand or restaurant, you can find good filling meals for a quick 3-7 bucks. Wholesale markets are a bit tougher to locate but then you will get a lot of food for a cheap price but you have to be able to store it, for example this is where i would get bags of rice, spices and frozen meats and other foods I can store for longer. Also find a good convenience store that puts a big end of day sale on their foods. It's Japanese culture to put foods on sale between certain hours sometimes even 50-80% off but it attracts a lot of people so you have to know what to get and where to get it before u go to the sale. Living like this will help you get set up in the beginning but once you found your job and u get ur first payment u should be able to afford a good life because teaching jobs typically pay between 220.000 yen and 280.000 yen while rent will run u between 16.000-80.000. If I can do it you can do it because I was homeless like 4 months ago. Having your goal clearly set on a bright future will motivate u more than anything will in a bad situation. I felt I was drowning here and there aren't opportunities for me to be happy so I set my goal and now nothing else matters. I hope this information was useful, let me know if you have anymore questions!
Of all the rings of hell he decided Japan.
If you live in Japan and want American style rolls, there is a shop in Atsugi called route 66. Japanese sushi is obviously the best but for nostalgia sake
This exact roll is available in the 7-11s in Hawaii and it is soooo gooooood 😭💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Wow honestly I’ll live in Japan without a job just for food
Until you're going there for job Or studies a very good country no cap
You won't get any food without job there.
@@kushalrijal9453well if you bring American money you could live without a job (depending on how much you bring)
the 711 near my school have this and i'll tell you, the seaweed is so hard to get out without it breaking
I'm living in Ireland and I get so peeved at the lack of good, simple sushi with raw fish. I love smoked salmon, but it's so difficult to buy sushi without it being substituted for actual raw fish!
Where did you go that the sushi was on fire?! 🍣🔥😂 That sounds so dangerous.
Me too
crap. this video made me crave sushi rolls 😂😂😂
honestly most sushi here in the US is also basically like that. different varieties of fish yeah but it’s basically just rice, fish, and seaweed. maybe avocado or cucumber but that’s it
The sushi restaurant i go to does both. They have a "sushi" section of the menu what consists solely of rice and fish and a "maki" section thats larger which consists of the more played up, deep fried, and fun "western" stuff. Not all of the maki is deep fried, but that section of the menu is where the California rolls, Texas rolls, dragon rolls, and other sorts of fun rolls sit. I love both.
I LOVE deep fried sushi though. Just had a spider roll earlier. So delicious 😋. I’m thinking of getting a dragon roll next time
Man! We can’t even get a bag of chip less than 1$ so Japan got their priorities straight
Lived in Japan when I was little, best experience ever. The kindest people and the best food ❤❤❤
This is how I feel for any sort of maki that has cheese on them. Treat them as a separate type of food instead comparing them to other kinds of maki.
I love simple sushi, I love crazy sushi, I love all sushi
Saw him 1st time biting on sushi roll otherwise he just used to cut them
ive always wanted to try US sushi. The dishes look interesting
Then I’d recommend deep fried sushi. If you’re not a fan of raw meat, then this one’s for you
This man just took a bite out of a full sunshine roll😮
They really said nah you hafta roll it and everything by yo self 😂
Honestly I like both Japanese and Americanized sushi, they are both equally valid approaches, one focusing on simplicity and enhancing the natural flavor of the fish while the other focuses on variety and diversity of flavor profiles.
Yep, I love both styles. Will depend on the mood though or what I want at the time. I am partial to dragon rolls
@@LordKalerrandragon rolls? I’m getting that next time. Just had a fried spider roll earlier. So 🤤

People comparing their western convenience store sushi to Japanese fresh made sushi are WACK 😭
....what are you talking about? Hardly any convenience store in America carries sushi....yet nearly EVERY convenience store in Japan has sushi.
@@benaffblack a lot of stores in america sells sushi. I've had friends and family get seriously sick for trying it at a gas station once too. Also sushi made and sold Japan isn't really comparable to the stuff they sell in America.
@@anaksayangdisini816 when you say a lot of stores, you're primarily talking about super market chains, like stop & shop, whole foods, roche bros, starmarket. And yes Gas station sushi does exist, but those are so far and few in-between. But the average convience store/gas station in America does not carry sushi because of the risks of not making it fresh in store (which most if not all supermarkets that carry sushi do).
And of course is not comparable, because it's en entirely different rendition. Sushi in America focuses on combinations and complexity, sushi in Japan relies on simplicity and the flavor of individual ingredients.
@@benaffblack i'm mostly talking about the western restaurants trying to make sushi or japanese dishes and then calling it 'authentic japanese cuisine' when it's really nothing like the food they make in japan. I'm sure there are some trained chefs that learned their cooking style in Japan and can actually replicate it but so far the experiences is had in American sushi places really just try to make their take on sushi and then try to sell it as real japanese style. It tastes good tho but i just don't want people to think that's what the real authentic sushi tastes like. I have an uncle that trained in Japan to make sushi and apparently it takes almost 10 years to get it the way they do. Not trying to start a fight or anything.
this man just made me think of making a DIY pre roll blunt

This video is very soothing
A lot of sushi restaurants, especially kaiten sushi, in the US has gone REALLY heavy on pre-making rolls, at least where I am. Nigiri sushi and simple rolls are what I consider to be actual sushi, but people would rather be overloaded with the flavor of tons of condiments that totally kill the flavor of the fish.
Looks simple yet delicious
I legit thought his guy was the “Daily Dose Of Internet” guy 💀
I miss the sushi in Japan. Honestly I miss the onigiri at train stations with the cups of coffee that come with the extendo straws you gotta push through the plastic 😂 Japan has convenience store food down.
I love your channel
You can get some really simple rolls for cheap in the US as well. Certain supermarkets have a "sushi man" come in on certain days and make fresh sushi. They're very simple, fairly fresh, and at least where I live, $5.99 for two rolls.
yea, the authentic type sushi are all very simple, and health. I've heard a Japanese chef saying that the goal of Japanese cuisine is to emphasize the original flavor of the ingredients, which is why most authentic japanese food don't have much seasoning, and often use seasonal ingredients
i wish we had these things in the US!
Honestly, my local place does seaweed, rice, and pretty much whatever lives in the water. One time they offered shark. I’m pretty sure it’s not traditional to put shark in sushi but hey, I treat sushi like I treat cheese. If I’ve never had it before I’ll try it at least once.
Japan packaging is elite
They made that wrapping so
-seaweed doesnt absorb moisture from rice
-wraps itself opening it without having to touch the rice part
I love simple rolls, and the complicated combos usually make me feel sick just from the taste and textures.
I like the ones with the tiny pink crunchy eggs.
these are here in hawaii; i never thought too much about this but when i saw the thumbnail i had to see what the buzz was about! lmao
although it's kinda obvious that hawaii would be at least a tiny bit closer to how things are done in japan when it comes to japanese thi ge
Love these convenience store hand rolls. Like $1-2 and great snack on the go. Two of these and some green tea will set you back like $5 and is an awesome healthy lunch
*When I went to Japan I went a little overboard at what looked to me like a 7-eleven called "family mart". There were so many food options compared to here.*
I ate a million of these on study abroad. the tuna mayo was my go to
Fr. Sometimes, you just need simple food that don't overwhelm you
No lie I love the heavily sauced sushi rolls. This is also true for ramen, I was kinda surprised how plain ramen was there, but yeah I guess it would be its just a normal meal over there.
This is also in Hawaii convience stores (ABC stores)
The ones I’ve had didn’t taste too good but I hope that authentic ones are good
Here in Italy most of the sushi pepole eat is like this, and yes, i always thought of it as it's own food without comparing it, same with things like mochi or other japanese dishes, because their taste for me feels like something that was made using completely different parameters from the ones we westerners use.
I really want to see the green one
So true. I spent a few months in Canada last year, and I got to experience what US/Canada sushi is like. And its crazy how much stuff is on them.
But I will say this. The spicy mayo slaps. I kinda love it.
SO THAT'S HOW YOU OPEN THE ROLL, THANKYOU
So simple, so delicious. They have some rolls at my local shop that I walk 1.5km to get to, but I'm quite poor so I have to resist the temptation every time to buy a small roll as a snack before heading back home. I tell myself I can make it at home much cheaper, so that's what I do instead. Lol
the most complicated roll i'll have is a philly - cream cheese, salmon, and avocado. soooo creamy. but fresh fish sushi is delicious. the more complicated tempura and eel sauce type stuff is good, but it's always too rich for me. i can only stomach a few pieces. it's just overwhelming
honestly though i'm not much of a nigiri person. sashimi is a huge yes, but i require nori with my rice lol
