  • In Kianjoguu, a village in Meru County's North Imenti, a river plays a unique role in the daily lives of its residents.
This river, a natural boundary, separates Kianjoguu from a neighboring area where an open-air bar operates with a rather lenient approach to its drinking hours.
From morning until 9 PM daily, villagers cross the river to drink at this bar, a practice facilitated by the local authorities' relaxed stance on alcohol consumption.
Despite the potential for disruption, the authorities seem to tolerate this activity, allowing the bar to thrive and the villagers to partake freely.
Access to this riverside bar isn't entirely free, though.
Patrons must pay a nominal fee of Kshs. 20 for a round trip across the river.
This modest toll is a small price for many who seek the bar's social atmosphere and the freedom to drink during the day.
The river crossing, thus, becomes a daily ritual for many, blending necessity with leisure in the heart of Kianjoguu.
