I’m a 35 year old metalhead dad who has become quite smitten with the very chill idea of cross stitching. CCS - and your videos specifically, Ford - have been my intro to learning. It’s all a bit overwhelming, but I’m looking forward to ordering my first kit and having a go. Thanks for all you folks do.
Really enjoyed this video. I learned that Catherine of Aragon was the catalyst for the use of black work, and was used as a substitute for the lack of lace at that time by mirroring the intricate details. I love the clean look of the work and recently completed a StarWars piece based on this. ❤
I do a SAL blackwork that is lasting every week for a year. You gave me great ideas to start. I never knew how to do it. I usually weave it under previous stitches which makes a mess of the back. So thank you!
Haven't tried blackwork but love your videos and learnt a lot. Just wondered why you used the hoop opposite to usual? IE upside down, working from the back not the front. Thanks 😊
Hi there! Thanks for the question. I call this stitching "in the well" (as opposed to "on the drum") and I do it because it helps keep the front of the project clean, and makes it easier to access the back of the project to bury my thread ends, etc, especially when working close to the boundary of the hoop. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tips on repairing mistakes. I was wondering what to do if I’ve put stitches where no stitches should go? When I remove the unwanted stitches, then the holes in the fabric are larger than if no stitches had been there. Please help!
As you continue to work on your product the holes should naturally relax into their original position - if they do not, a gentle wash after completing the project should do the trick!
These are great ideas but most only work on Aida. The waste knot looked very uneven because you didnt do a backstitch. Was there a reason for that? The last 2 ideas were great for working on linen.
Tuck it under stitches if you have enough that are tight enough, otherwise you can actually use pin stitch or (my preferred method) use the weave-splitting trick on the aida! Thanks for watching!

Thank you for your feedback and for watching.
How would you finish off the backstitching when you reach the end of the thread so it is secure?
