The Glasgow Subway

  • Today we take a look at the Glasgow Subway which operates in the city of Glasgow in Scotland, UK.
The system consists of a single 10.5 kilometer long loop line, which runs around the city center. The counterclockwise direction is referred to as “Inner Circle,” while the clockwise direction is the “Outer Circle.”
The Glasgow Subway is actually the third-oldest in the world (after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro), and it opened in December 1896. It may very well also be the tiniest in the world. The tunnels have a diameter of only 3.35 meters and the carriages are even substantially smaller than those of the deep lines in the London Underground. Unless you’re sitting, you will probably have to duck your head while in the cars.
Many stations have a single center platform, which is also quite narrow. I found this system really fascinating.
This film travels along the Inner Circle, starting and ending at St Enoch Station, which is located at the main shopping street in the city center. The film conveys a good impression of the tiny trains and the small stations.
    Enjoy, and don’t become claustrophobic!
Filmed on 15 July, 2015. Shot on iPhone 6+.

They just didn't think forward and think to expand it then modernise it, or just didn't want to spend money on it, Glasgow airport doesn't even have an rain airlink fuckin joke! They waste money on commonwealth games. Dicks!

      *****
Not them all, anyway they could still have expanded it considireng how old it is.. (Glasgow was 4th biggest city in europe, after London, Berlin, Paris. But they split the city up by building "new towns" far from the outskirts of the city, meanin the population was nearly halved)
Not to mention buildin a fuckin motorway right through the heart of the place - demolishing areas, not just streets.. thats my moan over! Glad you like the subway, it gets me about.
But, ask any guy how he feels abt bein called 'cute' lol

+adamrules01 It is actually not any worse than other systems when crowded. Maybe us Glaswegians are just used to it. The busier stations have two platforms, rather than island platforms.

Someone's never been to a Rangers game at Ibrox! The driver came on the intercom thing an said "everyone please stop jumpin up n' down, because the train may come off the tracks!"
no one stopped.. crammed in like sardines when Rangers play at home, people's head's gettin stuck when the doors close haha.
It must be one of the safest though, as there's two tunnels so it's impossible for a head on collision between two trains goin in the opposite direction.

We have two other underground railway lines in Glasgow. The Argyle and North Clyde Lines of the Suburban rail network are two sub-surface railways which go parallel east-west under the city centre. The North Clyde Line was the first such railway to be built outside of London, and opened in 1886 as the Glasgow City and District Railway. The Argyle Line opened as the Glasgow Central Railway in 1894, and it's core section forms part of the SPT rail network today. Unlike London, these two lines were not incorporated into a unified Underground system, the Glasgow Central Railway was closed, but then partially reopened in 1979. There are now a few disused underground stations and lines around Glasgow, particularly in the Kelvinbridge area. Much of the existing stretches very much resemble the subsurface LU lines, except a bit dirtier and less used.
Glasgow has, arguably, the second oldest underground railway in the world, but because it's part of the national rail network, it doesn't seem to count.

The Glasgow Subway was originally cable-operated. The two loops were not connected and cars were lifted out of the tunnel when in need of repair. The system wasn't electrified until 1935 and has an unusual track gauge of four feet.

Have there any been any deaths on the Glasgow Subway directly attributed to the narrow platforms? From a train drivers point of view it must be quite scary pulling into a crowded station with a packed platform especially if two trains arrive at once. I suppose you get used to it though, seeing people standing a couple of inches from the edge of the platform, just one jog, stagger or stumble away from certain death.

People who think that it's only for small people need to give themselves a talking to! Unlike the London Underground where you step up into a carriage you actually step down into the Glasgow Subway. No need to 'mind the gap' because there is not one! There is ample room for standing a peak times. Bridge Street & West Street are throwback stations for when the areas around were residential and not mainly commercial. Shields Road has a massive car park where commuters may leave their cars rather than trying to park in the city centre. Since you made your film most of the stations have had new paneling fitted and some like my favourite station Hillhead have now got beautiful paintings in the ticket hall. In all my years of travelling on the subway I have never been in a train that broke down, was dirty, was vandalised, smelt of piss etc. The stations are all immaculate and this is in Glasgow, no mean city.

Even got a similar Wedgelock coupler by the looks of it, though automotive type horns are fitted to these Glasgow ones it's seem. By the sounds of it, a camshaft controller with rheostat braking too, similar to LT's is used. I THINK, though I could be wrong, that they're narrow gauge too. Sets appear to be made up of a 2-car plus another driving motor, making 3 cars. Nice !

The Glasgow Subway (like its London (Underground/ Tube counterpart also) features 'brat style' shaped doors and windows. The 'bratage' shape is due to the curvature of the train carrages. Each carrage has two sets of double 'brat' doors on each side of the car. On the 'deep level' lines on the London Underground (Tube) carriages that form those trains have 8 doors in al. 4 on each side. (save for carriages placed at either end of the train which will only have 6 doors due to them having a driver's cab) A single 'brat' door at each end (one left, one right) and two sets of double 'brat' doors evenly spaced midway along the carriage ( two left and two right)

And is it all underground? If so, where do they keep the cars stored and how do people evacuate in a emergency if the tunnels are so small?

    • @WDH59510
      @WDH59510 8 лет назад +1

I believe there's a depot near Govan station where the cars actually come above ground. In the old days they used to winch the cars off the lines at Broomloan Road depot for essential maintenance. And yes the passenger lines are all underground.

  • @WDH59510

An opportunity may have been lost years ago to expand the system. The Subway as I remember it from my schooldays shut down in May 1977 and was reopened in 1980 with new rolling stock and the same 15 stations (renovated). The Subway essentially serves the City Centre and the West End plus parts of residential South-West Glasgow but goes nowhere else. Oh and the system will shut down in June 2016 for at least a month for essential maintenance.
