That was really interesting watching your process. I was going to leave my thrifting defeated today but I saw a brown leatherette case in the glass counter at the front of the store. It really looked like there might be a movie camera in it which is what I mostly look for. I actually thought maybe it would be a Bolex. The lady handed me the box and I was excited when I opened it, hoping what was inside. It was an N50 which was a disappointment to me. But I really liked the box and they only wanted $10 for the camera body and the box so I bought it. There was another guy there who was interested in the camera and I chased him down in the parking lot and offered it to him for the $10 I paid for the whole kit, so I got the box for free. I hate electronic SLRs with buttons and expensive batteries so much, I was happy for him to have it and don't regret it, and we had a nice camera conversation for quite some time in the parking lot. I will use the box for my Minolta SRT 201 I inherited from my friend.
Have you ever thought about making a video on everything that can go wrong when shooting with film? Light leaks, static electricity marks, fogging etc. and what they look like and what causes them.
That's a great idea and I have thought of something similar. I'd likely tackle one issue at a time though. I'd be more likely to tackle one issue at a time. The static electricity one sticks out for me because I've had that issue a few times on my film from separating tape from expired medium format film. Thanks for the suggestion!
Azriel Knight I would love to see what issues can come about because I'm self teaching myself based on RUclips and books, and even if something was wrong I'm not sure I would know it lol.
Hate to break it to you but I learned the same way. Only tip I can give you is practice, and when something comes up, hit the forums and hope someone nice replies and not some snotty know it all :P
The F50 was just about my favorite Nikon film camera ever. I didn't even like the f801/N8008 as much, even though it was much more of a prosumer model than the f50. And of course I never had any of the newer just plain F's, I've only had the original F, so I suppose maybe I would have liked those. And of course I don't imagine the F50 would have stood up to professional use, but I neither was nor am a pro, so to me that doesn't matter so much. What I loved about it was the ergonomics. I seem to remember in that generation of Nikons, every new model had a completely new set of ergonomics to it, and the F50 for was simply the best of the lot.
I got one of these for free a while ago. I haven't developed the film yet, but I can relate to some of your points here. First of all, I wasn't comfortable with the armada of small buttons on the top of the camera to adjust aperture and shutter speed. Every time I need to change either of them my fingers got on the wrong button. Guess that's a matter of getting used to it though. Also the shutter release button is way too trigger-happy, resulting in at least 5 unintentional shots out of 36, haha!
Nice video as always, Azriel. I'd like to consider using the F65 nowadays at the lowest Nikon AF SLR entry point. The F55 and everything else under the F65 at least, isn't worth it nowadays, if one doesn't get it for free (means, as rear lens body cap :) Happy holidays !
That's a decent camera, would it be worth getting it fixed? I know these videos are old now and maybe you've no longer got it, but decent film cameras are getting very expensive now on the Bay. I would love for you to do a first impression on an original Ricoh KR-10 (not the Super), that was my first decent SLR, bought for me on my 18th birthday back in 1980! Would love to see what you think of it.
I think that dollar for dollar you're better off buying another F50 if one breaks, or any camera for that matter, IF you play with a lot of cameras. But if you plan to have one, or a couple cameras and use them for everything, then I would have it serviced, even if it costs more because you pay for peace of mind. Also, better the devil you know.
i had to bring the dogs in too the igloo last night no problem i have never seen streaks like that you are saving me money and i like that thank you have a nice day aye
I bought a few N50 bodies for £5.00 each a few years ago simply because I ended up with a 28mm Nikon F lens in a box of camera parts, I like the camera but like you the silly batteries the manufactures inflicted on it's customers is a major problem, so nice to use a F90 with 4 AAs .
I put a 18-55mm DX kit lens from my DSLR on my F80 and I found that not only does it fill the frame from 24-55mm but also the vibration reduction works, so I was using a Nikon F80 at night with B&W film at 800 taking street photos at 1/4 second exposures and it's coming out. Anyway, I thought I'd give you a heads up that works, it would be great if someone made a video about doing that.
@@AzrielKnight It wouldn't have worked in that body anyway, the VR did not work in my F90X, I think it needs to be one of the latter film bodies. I just thought I'd make a suggestion for what I thought would be a cool video.
Your video on this camera is great, thank you, gave me some good insight. I'm thinking of either buying this camera or the Nikon F-601. In your opinion, which is better?
I don't know about that camera specifically but carry it around for a bit, feel where the buttons are and if you don't like it you probably don't need to turn it on :)
Not sure if you've watched, but I did a marathon where I shot 30 cameras in 30 days and I regularly taped my cameras up when I thought they might leak. If this were going into my personal collection I would fix it for sure. I used craft foam to replace the front seal in my A-1 recently. Thanks for the comment!
Well... I have to saying that is impress review. I do know most newer film camera aren't very reliable. Know Pentax ME F and special autofocus (AF) lens? It was commercial failure due to AF poorly. That is why I prefer a good oldie lens with three different control.
Thanks for the comment! I prefer the oldies myself. All mechanical preferably, but a few 80's and 90's model SLR's still impress me. When it comes to Pentax I prefer their older stuff, but I also have a K10D and like just how many tactile buttons they put on a digital SLR.
OH! Jesus, sorry. That shows the film canister inside so you know what you are shooting with. They have light seals on the other end so only the label shows but deteriorate over time.
And the night begins to shine
Awesome! Very serious and professional review. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
Your Kodak wall clock is the coolest thing!
Come to Murcia-Spain, our coldest winter is hottest to your summer 😄.
Great review.Thanks for sharing👍🏻

this was actually a really interesting story. nice read
Hope you do more of "This old camera" sometime. I really enjoy watching those too
I had a couple cameras lined up but they aren't working. Soon :)
You're right, it is an expensive battery! I wonder if any rechargeables exist for that form factor
no idea, but that would be rad.

Thanks for sharing. For me, I need iso control, in case I push.
@@AzrielKnight Me too! But i hack the DX code.
cool 80s sound
Just inherited one I think I have alot to learn... my other film camera is a Canon FTb

Never shot with the 602 so I couldn't tell ya. I'm more of a Canon guy :)
Azriel, please give it another chance, save her! :) Man, a Nikon F3 is a beauty!
You want it? :)
He he, thanks man, I can't have it, thanks!
ill take it
This can camera can use the older nikon lenses ? or only work with AF.
They can take older lenses.
great video Azriel 👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
awesome
I have a Nikon EM and F50. I have experience with digital photography but not with film, which camera do you think is better to start with? Thanks
I don't know a tonne about Nikon, but I say the EM
Thanks for the cool vid! I really enjoyed your honesty :D I think I am going to give that camera a chance.
Yeah it's decent, though I admit I don't have a lot of experience with Nikon.
I still have this Nikon f50 SLR camera with sigma auto focus lens but I don't know how to fix it.. Lol
Might not be worth it but what you can do is sell the broken one on eBay and use the money for a working one.
just got an f70 for free with a lens is it worth the batteries and film to use that puppy? I've read some mixed reviews on that model....
I don't know about that camera specifically but carry it around for a bit, feel where the buttons are and if you don't like it you probably don't need to turn it on :)
...and I ran, I ran so far away.
Why don't you buy some foam with adhesive back from a hobby store and fix the seals? It'll only cost a dollar or two :)

Yup, I remember. Used to comment under a different name ;)
Bummer it didn't work properly. I guess it's always risky buying an older camera.
It looks like I'm at least getting a partial refund so there's that.

Wat is that small window on the back for?
Where? Can you time stamp?

That blacked out area on the left side is a basement window.
Azriel Knight thanks, but I mean on the back of the camera :)
OH! Jesus, sorry. That shows the film canister inside so you know what you are shooting with. They have light seals on the other end so only the label shows but deteriorate over time.
What happened, did you run out of tape?
LOL, naw I wanted to see if there were leaks this time.
canadian aye
I got mine for free with a lens
